Got orders to Eglin AFB

So I got the call today that I've been given orders to Eglin. I don't know the address of the command yet (33d Fighter Wing) so I don't know where to look for a place as the base looks HUGE. A lot of places look like a total dump but there are some good ones. Anyone in the area can suggest something? I'm a single male with a small black lab.

Remmy

Congrats, Eglin is a great assignment...the 33rd is the Flying Wing down there. I was assigned to the 96 ABW. I was a Commander of one of the squadrons down there from 08-10', my wife and I loved it.

Housing, a lot of military have moved up to Crestview, but it can be a good drive and dangerous at times with the amount of deer...but I know a lot of people that live up there and swear by it. You also have Fort Walton (closest) and Destin (across the bridge) that you can look into. The base housing is supposed to be contracted now, so they may be something worth looking at first...they were terrible when I was there but supposedly that has all been torn down.

Noticed your in Norfolk...I am in Afghanistan right now, but deployed out of Langley AFB...where I was a Commander there as well...we live in Hampton. When I return in June from this year, I will be heading to San Antonio...

Thank you for the advice sir! I really needed to know the area near the command to look for. I can't wait for it and frankly haven't heard anything bad about it yet. I will not miss Norfolk. I've been robbed twice here and the weather almost always sucks. It doesn't help either that I'm from Charleston, SC so I'm already pre-spoiled! I'm also just REALLY glad ill have Publix again. They're fried chicken is the best.

That stinks about Norfolk and you getting robbed. Seems a little better across the bridge in Hampton...but we will not miss the Tidewater area either...tracking with Publix...

For the summer, you can a party barge from either Eglin or Hurlburt Field, just need to complete the 1/2 day boating course...offered at the base Marinas...then head out to Crab Island...it is a blast and I spent most of my weekends there in a floating tube with a cigar and beer! You will have a blast!

Hit me up if you have any questions...I still have a lot of my troops there, Junior enlisted and Senior NCOs...they can help out with advise if needed

Re: Got orders to Eglin AFB

Ive heard about this 'Crab Island'. Coming from a boat town myself, I know better than that. Ill find someone who already has a boat.

I may have to take you up on getting in touch with your NCO's.

What platform do you work with Sir? I currently work with MH-60S KnightHawks at HSC-26.

Re: Got orders to Eglin AFB

I am a Security Forces Officer, basically the MPs for the USAF. My unit secured main base and the Eglin reservation.
