Re: A Teen at Work!

I feel your pain, but mine was in extreme heat! I'm getting ready to replace for the second time my '97 ZJ's water pump, and while I'm at it, the radiator (17 year old original), hoses and t-stat after having problems a couple of years ago in the 180 degree heat of the California desert east of Barstow. Replaced the OEM water pump with a parts store version, and when I compared them side-by side, noticed that the impeller vanes on the OEM were significantly deeper. I've had way higher than normal operating temps ever since, especially pulling the long, steep grades between SoCal and Moab, UT.

A good "lesson learned", that's for sure.

One thing you might want to check out: when I brought my Mopar Accessories parts list (with internet pricing including shipping charges) to a local dealer that I chose for servicing my new 2014 WK2 diesel, I explained that although their sales department chose not to accept my price for ordering my new GC, I still wanted to offer them my parts business (I'd already had them perform the first service - an oil change). After the parts guy talked with his manager, they matched the internet prices within about $20 for over $2000 worth of stuff (5 wheels & tire pressure sensors, skid plate kits & rock rails). So if you haven't tried that yet with your local dealer, you might want to do that next time you need parts. It was a lot easier for me to just order the stuff from them and pick everything up when it came in, since they're near my office.

Are you serious!? That is awesome to know and I really appreciate the advice. I live two minutes from a Mopar dealer and they would be such a convenience to work with if they could price match. I'll give that a go soon! I'm going to change my water pump come spring. Thanks again!

Re: A Teen at Work!

Well, glad to help but don't get your hopes up yet. Some dealers will attempt to price match, and others won't. My local dealer here in HB won't, and separately, I had a bad service dept. experience with them with the ZJ. So when I started shopping for my 2014, I found another dealer nearby that was close to my office to start negotiating with (unsuccessfully on the vehicle sale and I went with the Houston dealer (group buy), but so far a good experience with servicing and parts sales).

Go to a couple of the major online Mopar retailers, note their prices and add the stuff to your cart. Add the shipping costs (although I just realized that you're in NJ, and the 2 major ones are closer to you than me out on the west coast, so you may not save as much/haggle as much with the shipping included). Then before I order I note the prices and then just delete the contents of my cart and close out the page.

I just take the pricing to the dealer I do business with and ask them if they can come close to the total price of the things I'm wanting to buy. Some things may be more, and some things may be equal to or less. Overall, I just want a reasonable price, close to what I could have it shipped for but understanding that they're not really on online internet business - their operating costs are higher to support a brick-and-mortar presence. I'm also willing to pay a little more for convenience (having to sign for packages on receipt is a problem, especially for UPS).

The bottom line is, I get OEM parts at a reasonable price, which is not necessarily the cheapest price. In this case, I think you get what you pay for, as you've found out.

I hear ya. I will be needing fluids soon along with the water pump. I really appreciate all the advice though and it's worth a shot to see if the local dealer will commit. I will let you know though, it will be a big deal for me!

Re: A Teen at Work!

I posted up the after pictures once I was done painting with Chassis Saver, but I never posted what it looks like after everything was reinstalled. You can also see I have the Rocky Road Outfitters adjustable track bar running now! It works great so far!

Re: A Teen at Work!

The weather forecast is looking pretty good (for me at least)! It seems as though the winter storms are coming to an end and spring is upon us! Bring on the Jeep mods! Seriously, the cold has been my weakness. Taking out a single bolt in the cold can result in some seriously cold hands... Aside from my whining, there is another Jeep WK/XK Rausch Creek trip set up for this April 11th. I will be there with the GoPro to make a much better video than last time along with many high resolution pictures! I'll probably be staying at the local hotel this time, camping was fun, but I may stay over an extra night.

Here is last years video which was basically unedited. I will make this years much nicer!

Goodbye winter!

Re: A Teen at Work!

Here we are with another update. I am trying to be more consistent now, but I am a slacker... The trip to Rausch was awesome, though. We wheeled a new part of the park and really tested the limits of some rigs. I will post up all of the pictures and the video I am editing when they are all done! I saw many of the well known WK guys (and Chelsea) that I have come to know and love. I also got a chance to meet many new people in the community and made some awesome friends.

As for my WK, a lot has been going on, but with the rush to set the rig up before Rausch, I always find it hard to keep track of it all. Being that I did a lot before the trip, I will backtrack. The most recent work was simple maintenance. I did a simple antifreeze change mixing about 55% Mopar antifreeze with 45% distilled water, but did a flush procedure first with Peak Flush and Super Cleaner (I did five total flushes). I also added some Royal Purple Purple Ice into the antifreeze mix to see how that goes. I can never get enough RP. The hemi drank 14.5 quarts right up!

The Jeep had exactly 108,000 miles at the time of this maintenance.

Re: A Teen at Work!

The other day, a buddy of mine asked me to do some work to his SRT8 and I was happy to do it. I ended up lowering it with H&R coils, installed Bwoody end links front and back, Bwoody track bar, Energy Suspension bump stops, and a Sarona carbon fiber hood. The Jeep is a beast and is sexy beyond belief. It worked out for me too because I ended up getting his old front end links that I can use for my new ADDCO sway bar! You can check out the process here: Complete SRT8 Makeover Done Right
