Complete sound system overhaul with pics

I have a laredo with the standard sound system. Here's what I replaced it with :

Pioneer Premier DEH-P3900MP (deck)
Boston Acoustics Pro 60 (front component speakers)
Boston Acoustics SR65 (rear speakers)
JL Audio 10" 3w3 (sub)
Alpine MRP-F450 (4 channel amp for speakers)
Alping MRP-M500 (mono amp for sub)

First impressions, everything sounds amazing. The acoustics of the Grand Cherokee are better than any vehicles I've owned previously. I can crank the volume up louder than I can stand it and if I get out and close the doors, you can't hear or feel much from outside the vehicle. (So you won't be 'that guy' rolling down the street breaking windows). Inside the vehicle though, everything is loud and the bass kicks hard.

I normally put amps under the driver and passenger seats but because of the battery location and the false floor under the seats I didn't want to put them there. There wasn't enough room under the back seats and I didn't want to lose any cargo space so I stuck them on the rear of the back seats. I think it looks pretty sweet and it saves space.

The sub box is heavy enough that it didn't need to be mounted down. If I was gonna do any serious off roading though I'd probably want to secure it somehow or take it out for the ride (takes 5 seconds to remove from the vehicle.)

I threw a picture of the tweeter in too because different from other vehicles I've owned, the grill on the factory tweeter is part of the tweeter itself rather than the tweeter enclosure so you won't keep the factory look if you replace the tweeters (I think this way looks cooler though).

The other great thing about the WK2 was the battery placement under the seat. It made the amp install much easier than normal.

If anyone is considering redoing their audio setup I highly recommend the equipment I chose. If you're into rap you may want a bigger amp or a bigger sub, but this one can kick harder than I'd ever want it to. In fact, I've got the low pass filter set around 75hz so the bass is really clean and tight (no shaking the car next to you).

Re: Complete sound system overhaul with pics

Nice work. Would be nice to see better photos please if you have a chance. Always thought even the upgraded sub was too small in these rigs. Did you replace much of the speaker wires or use stock? Do you have steering wheel mounted audio controls in the Laredo, if so were you able to keep them operational?

I guess the only way the amps become an issue is if you need to flop down the rear seats for cargo. The Alpine amps are great, check out their compact 5 channel if you determine you want the rear seat surface area back.

Re: Complete sound system overhaul with pics

Can someone post a pic of the underside of the rear seats? Do they fold up, or do they stay in place with the seat backs folded?

They stay in place with the seat backs folded down. Not sure of the undercarriage space though.

I can probably get higher quality pictures, just gotta find my digital camera. The amps could cause issue for people moving a lot of cargo with the seats down, but luckily I don't see it being a problem for me.

The stock wire is still in place going from the headunit area to the speakers. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it). New wire from the amps to the headunit area.

I don't have the steering wheel mounted controls, but there is an adapter to make them work with the pioneer headunit if you want to keep them.

I did look at the 5 channel Alpine and it would have been nice seeing as it has the exact same specs as my 2 amp setup, but I already had the 4 channel amp and the sub amp was fairly cheap. I couldn't justify the extra money to get the 5 channel. If I was starting from scratch though, I would have definitely gone with the 5 channel.

Looks like I spoke a little too soon... These-

Boston Acoustics SR65 (rear speakers)

Aren't actually installed yet and they're not going to be. The mounting space in the rear doors is too shallow. I'll be putting in some Alpine SPR-17C speakers instead.

Re: Complete sound system overhaul with pics

Nice work..... I've got pics of my system somewhere on here. I've got my Jeep Dynomatted and that makes a huge difference as well. It really makes my door speakers pop! I've got Dynaudio 3 ways up front with a JL HD600 pushing them and the rears. Dynomatting the door makes such a nice difference. Even driving the Jeep. The Jeep sounds much more solid than others. I've had other SRT8 owners ride in my Jeep and could tell a difference.
