Re: Jay's 05 WK Build Thread

Ok, so here is a video showing some quick sheet metal mock ups. This should better show what I was trying to explain in words alone.

Haha! Nice vid! I saw exactly what you were describing in my head, but for those with no visual imagination cough.. Jay ..cough, that should help. I like the idea of having a bull bar even if it only covers the fairlead.

Re: Jay's 05 WK Build Thread

Its amazing what you can do with too much time on your hands due to a lack of work, some spare sheet metal, and a smart phone.

One thing I thought of after the fact is where I bent that little vertical section, you could use a piece of 2 inch sch 80 pipe to give you a nice radius that would stand up to pretty much what ever you hit with it. It would also give you a nice rounded edge to use as a rock slider to get up and over any obstacles.

again just my 2 cents

The other thing to add to gain some rigidity would be return bends on either side, or a piece welded in perpendicular to the surface. Doesn't have to be big, but a flange along there will dramatically increase the strength.

Re: Jay's 05 WK Build Thread

JRollins- First off, thanks for the awesome vid you put together! ok so I completely understand now. I really like the options your idea opens up, so I'll definitely have to play around with it. I'm not too concerned about getting any lights mounted on it as I want to keep this as clean and fluid looking as possible. I do however like the hoop idea. I also like Muddy's idea about the perpendicular weld. My plan is to run two perpendicular strips that are about an inch wide from top to bottom of the backside to strengthen it from warping.
My original plan was to weld in two mounts coming off the backside that tie it in to the crossmember in order to shave some weight and bulk from it.

Here is a chop of AEV's build that already has the winch and recovery hooks. I like the idea of keeping a simple, clean, piece that offers unerneath protection as well as protection in the top area where the winch cable and hoook would be banging around during use.

I started taking a close look at a lot of newer vehicles that LOOK like they have skids by having skid shapes molded into the bumper covers:

It's still early in the design and with all these cool ideas who knows what it will end up like. Whatever the finished product, Omelet will most likely end up building something better. What a punk.
Thanks guys!

No way bud! Your skid idea is awesome! In fact once I upgrade to the SL I might have to copy you.

Re: Jay's 05 WK Build Thread

Idea just popped into my head!

What about taking that guard up inside of your bumper and tieing it right into the front cross member? You already have it all cut out, and having under there similar to your AEV version would look pretty sick, especially if you can get the tow hooks to poke through it. Would kind of give it that OEM/AEV upgrade type look.

Re: Jay's 05 WK Build Thread

Well, I haven't had too much time to work on the skid lately, but I did jump on the bandwagon and hooked up an 8 gauge ground wire to my Throttle Body. At first I was skeptical, but throttle response is much better! Best $4/15 min mod I've done thus far!

Re: Jay's 05 WK Build Thread

I gotta try that. Earthing/Ground kits are pretty popular in the import world. I wonder if there are any other spots we could ground that would help. I'm going to get some 4 AWG and go to town
