Re: Nick's (GCL06) Build Thread

If you notice, he has kept the stock air box and the new cone filter sits inside the box. Thus still drawing air from the extiorer rather than "hot air" from under the hood. K&N comes with a heat shield and deletes the OEM air box which allows for a direct flow of cold air from the exterior. (deletes the straw of an intake flow the OWM box has and leaves the gap open in the grill which flows directly to the new CAI. K&N has proven Dyno sheets to proves the HP gains

WHICH I would recommend making a heat shield of some sort or ripping our the stock box and cutting it to open up more to the front of the jeep.

Good stuff. I will probably end up doing this when I get the chance. Shouldn't be too hard to make a heat shield

K&N is painted metal. You could probably use a plastic spray like plasti dip that will keep the shield cool.

IF you were to datalog and monitor the intake air temperatures, you will find this arrangement is pulling in hot air from under the hood. It needs to have a box around the filter to reduce hot air intake, which is why I went with the AFE II and not a cheaper one that has no enclosure. After start up when you first drive it the underhood temps are cool and it will be faster than stock. When it is a full operating temp, you are losing HP from all the hot air.

Re: Nick's (GCL06) Build Thread

Also! When/if you do decide to make a heat shield, i would get more PVC piping to lengthen the tube so that you can drop it futher down and towards the front of the jeep. DMS has a point with the hot air thing. Take K&N for example, the filter is right where the OEM air box sits, so once the OEM air box is gone you'll have A LOT more room to drop the CAI futher and possibly a bigger filter... from K&N... lol

Looks legit tho!

My concern with dropping the intake further down would be increasing the risk of hydrolocking while offroading. I'll fix things up one way or another when I get the chance haha.

Thanks for the info and suggestions guys, always room to improve on a rig.
