Re: Omelet's Build Thread!

So I purchased a used ARB bar today from a shop in CO for $300!!! I have been looking around for a used one and planned to continue looking until I returned home. At which point if I hadn't found one I was going to consider purchasing a new one. Letís just say I am REALLY excited about this one, because it was going to be extremely difficult to convince myself to purchase a $1400 bumper just to start hacking it up! I wonít have anything set in stone until I get my hands on it and start working, but here's the basic plan:

-Remove my current winch cradle
-Make a new cradle using the ARB mounting bracket
-Remove all the unnecessary junk from the bar to save as much weight as possible
-Shorten the bar as much as possible
-Reuse my hawse fairlead, winch, and synthetic line

A couple additional things I might do:

-Remove and fill the holes for the fogs and markers
-Mount a set of 6" single row lights in place of the fogs
-Flush mount the 20" Rigid into the front of the bar

In the mean time I just need to get it home! I am asking a few friends and family who might be driving between CO and SoCal between now and Dec so that I don't have to pay for shipping, but if nothing else I will pay to have it shipped and it will still be a great deal. So if anyone is planning a trip and can lug this back for me, shoot me a PM and we can work something out!

Re: Omelet's Build Thread!

I saved 20 kg, or 44 lbs, cutting the bar work off my ARB bull bar.

Here are some of the ARB bars I have modded in the past.

Custom ARB 1

ARB new bar

ARB rear bumper

Re: Omelet's Build Thread!

Oh man, I remember following along as you built your XJ! I loved that thing! I had a white '91 XJ for 10 years and yours was always my go to Jeep for awesome ideas I really like what you did with your bars. I don't like how far the ARB bars stick out and on some models I don't like the look of the grill/headlamp guards. I have thought about cutting the guard off to save weight, but I have seen one that someone did and I'm not a fan of how it looks. The WK is one I actually prefer the guard on the top. I will be shortening the bumper to improve approach angles and will probably have to modify the guard to get the bar back as far as I want it, but as of right now I am wanting to keep the guard on even though I know it adds a bit of weight.

The weight part of all this is something I have thought about a lot. Besides the cost of a good looking steel bumper being outrageous for these Jeeps, the additional weight has been the big thing holding me back. Most of the WK/XKs I have seen busting axles and tie rods and other random stuff, were all running heavy steel bumpers. Seeing as though I wheel my Jeep pretty hard and am running 35" tires (I have seen guys snap shafts while running 285s) it got me thinking about why. Granted I do try to take it easy on the skinny peddle while I'm off road and use traction and momentum to conquer an obstacle, instead of smashing the peddle and plowing my way over or through it. I still have yet to snap a shaft or bend/break a tie rod (knock on wood!). So what I figure is it's the additional weight that is the problem more so then the tire size.

Knowing this I will now need to do something about it before bolting the ARB on and going wheeling. Seeing as though I got such a killer deal on this bar I will now have more to spend on other things, such as RCV shafts, a custom drive shaft, and possibly custom tie rods unless someone starts making them here soon. The RCV shafts are quite pricey, but I think I will actually NEED them now and the peace of mind will make them well worth it! We will see how much I am able to save between now and Dec

Re: Omelet's Build Thread!

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

The old XJ is still going strong BTW and is our only means of transport all these years.

Wow, I didn't know you still had it! That's awesome! I wished I could have kept mine for my son, but he's only 8 and I don't have the space for 3 vehicles.

Re: Omelet's Build Thread!

Sorry my brother has dibs on the winch cradle and the Matrix. He's hoping to get down to SD around Christmas so I can swap them over to his WK and start building the bumper on mine.

So I never posted the pics from my last trip I did with my dad right before leaving! We had been trying to hook up and hit Pancake Rock for a while, but it never worked out until now (a couple months ago ) I don't have very many pics, but there are some good ones.

Airing down at the base

Getting up the rock

At the top

Then we were in a hury to get back to the house which caused a little delay. I took a bad line and came VERY close to kissing a rock with my door! You can't really tell from the pic but the Jeep was sliding to the side into the rock with each inch I moved. By the time I realized the situation I was in it was too late, there was no manuevering out of it. So my dad used his winch and pulled me back and away from the rock. It was a close call, but I JUST made it out without any damage.

All and all it was a good time, just too bad we had to be rushed. It's hard to enjoy a scenic trail like that when on a time crunch.

Re: Omelet's Build Thread!

Hey omelet do you think I could get a local exhaust shop to put the same little side exhaust thing you did on your WK?
