K Sport Coil Overs final review

So I finally got to try them out on the track. My fears have been confirmed. I have mine set at the max firmness on the damper setting. I personally thought that it wasn't enough. The max setting is actually where the mid setting should start if I was making these.

On normal driving there were occasions that the fronts would bottom out, mostly on transitions from road to bridge or asphalt to concrete or even certain dips. The rears are good. I have had no issues with bottoming out even while towing a boat.

The track day confirmed my fears of them being to soft. There is a straight away at the track I was at and it would bottom out during part of it, not horribly but just enough to know you you maxed out the range of the coil over. Also if you ran up on the rumble strip on a turn it would bottom out and not in a nice way but in a way that would make you not want to go there again.

If they decide to make more of them somebody should forward this to them to have them make the necessary changes. Hopefully if the other companies that might be making them will make the damper settings firmer it would be a good for all.

Just stock. The project was a fail as far as I'm concerned. They work fine but they could have been better especially considering how long it took them to make. I don't know if contacting them would make a difference as they don't seem to be making them. So this is where it stands. We will see if BC will have any better luck.

Thanks for the report Chad, I was waiting to hear an ACTUAL track test for a longgg time. I know how long it took to make them and then for guys to actually test them whewwww, its been a longgg haul. Sorry to hear they're not the bees knees, but figuring they're the first run (hopefully not the last) it'd be hard to get the right settings. Takes testing like you said and then the appropriate changes ca n be made. Just make you wonder, did K Sport actually test these things on a circuit? Is that "standard" procedure?

They didn't test them at all. They sent a set to somebody who wasn't even in the group buy and let him put them on. He did not do a very good job of doing any performance testing. I believe I was the first to put them to use on a track. K Sport has been a total failure when it comes to these. They work but they could be better.

Ahhh I see, well its no wonder they are what they are. I guess you got semi-burned, took the risk though and hey sometimes that happens. Im sure there will be a nice street/track coilover made for these things at some point. If not, I think having a set custom made may be a the best option. Financially that'd be a huge investment but Im sure if a vendor was willing to do it, somebody could develop a pretty sick set of coilovers for the Jeep

That really is the problem. There are other companies trying to make them but they are taking just as long if not longer. We are low on the totem pole when it comes getting performance stuff made. We are a low niche group.

100% agree. It's like anything in the car world, all business. And I bet a lot of it has to due with the type of truck/market its in. In that its a performance SUV to the max, but I bet a large majority of owners, like 90% or higher are simply looking for straight line performance stuff rather than circuit. When I say that I mean most people when they think suspension mods they think, lets stiffen her up with a fat front/rear sway with some links and then drop it. No one really gets into adjustable setup where they can mess with spring rates and dampening as well as the changes needed when the overall geometry changes. Like when we drop the truck we need to increase the spring rate to effectively take advantage of that as well as the dampers but besides swapping to Bwoodys or other springs, what is there? I mean do most owners even need the ability to adjust, do they encounter different surface/conditions in which they'd benefit from a setup not to mention the price that usually come with a nice adj setup?

Then again, on the other side of it, drag racing is just as much an art and science as autocross so guys would probably see some nice gains with a solid suspension setup versus stock compare to just messing with air pressures in tires and so on. I bet if we could get some serious results from a 100% stock Jeep or even lightly suspension modded one compared to a coilover Jeep (stock) at the track, we could get some guys on board But how hard would that be?

I think its a matter of time, hopefully well see something for these. If not someone with some bills needs to setup and see if they can get someone to do some testing and produce a well planned/executed coilover in very limited runs and then go from there? Im personally interested in a fully adjustable setup. I just want the best possible handling Jeep I can have say for track or whatever and still have the ability to have a bearable ride on the street.

I am a set it and forget it guy but I would like to have some adjustment + or - from what I consider the starting point not maxed out at the starting point. There are some things in the works locally to me. We will see how it goes.
