2012 WK2 Overland CRD audio system improvement

Hi from South Africa

I've been reading all the upgrades that you guys have been doing to the stock system in the GC, and am now considering some myself. I know there's a lot of info in the threads available, but was hoping to get some advice on a simple upgrade.

I'm fairly happy with the current system, so I don't want to go all out and change the whole setup (or ruin my bank balance), but was thinking of getting a bit more out of it by changing out some speakers.

What would be the best route - changing the centre and/or tweeters and/or front door 6x9's?

What I want is a bit more clarity, so I'm considering changing the tweeters and centre for now?

I have the 730 RHP head unit

Your esteemed advice is much appreciated

Greetings,

Welcome to Jeepgarage.org.

It sounds to me that you have the factory Alpine Premium system in your WK2. As you have indicated here, you have gone though a lot of threads and realize that the upgrade is a costly one. But, you can do it in stages.

Since you are looking for a Sound Quality ("SQ") system the best thing first do is change out the front door components. You need to find a speaker component set that has very good efficiency rating in order to still use the factory amp. You will not be using the passive crossover that comes with set. Instead, you do a straight substitution with the mid bass/midrange and tweeter. You will also be using the DSP factory crossover.

In terms of speakers, IMO, I am not a fan of 6x9 for an SQ system, especially since you want clarity. There are many 6.5 on the market to choice from. Listen to them with your type of music and zone in this way to your selection. I am not sure of speaker selection in your area.

The centre channel is another story. Some here just change them out to get a little more clarity. Others, like me, to get the correct effect of the center channel change everything including the DSP. This is matter of preference that you will have to explore. And yes, this is were it starts to add up quickly. I can tell you when I did mine, I have a full L/C/R front stage and the center does not have a lot of high end in the tweeter since my speaker is a wide band full range driver that I have cut out around 16k hz.

Otherwise, overtime you can upgrade the system and make it a sweet thing to listen to and keep the price in check.

Check this thread out for examples on the upgrade path:

Best for now.
