Maybe it's time to make this very important announcement for anyone planning to purchase a 2014 WK2:

Not only will you NOT be able to install 2014 radios into prior models, you will NOT be able to upgrade/downgrade/change radios WITHIN the 2014 models themselves! That's right - for example, if you order a Laredo with the base radio (RA1 or RA2) you will NOT be able to upgrade it to a RA3 (optional nav) or RA4 (nav)! And if your vehicle comes with an RA3 you will NOT be able to upgrade it it to a RA4.

The 8.4" RA3 comes without navigation, and while navigation is an optional upgrade (via dealer), it will be spendy - AND the navigation features will NOT be as elite as they are on the RA4.

different wiring harnesses and for lack of a better term right now a different modulator/module that is unique to the vehicle. Milous probably has all of the right terminology though.

When you have the dealer install navigation on the RA3 you do not get dead reckoning, 3D and from what I have been told the software is not the same as the software on the RA4.

Re: 2014 8" nav into 2011+ models

That's gonna piss a lot of people (and dealers) off. Not being able to do something as simple as swap the radio can be the difference between making the sale and someone walking out because you can't get exactly what they want right there. Maybe it won't matter, don't know.

Interesting that they're going to a tiered nav setup. I was expecting it to work like Ford, you can get the big touch screen, and add nav to it if you wish and it will be just like if it came from the factory. IMO, this is a superior strategy, making the hardware more universal and just upgrading the software when desired.

As far as the steering wheel controls... you just have to read the signals coming out of the wheel and then use that to control whatever you want. Several people have already installed aftermarket stereos in their WK2s and retained the steering wheel controls, most steering wheels still use resistor trees to send out the controls, which are easily decoded and then utilized on a USB type of input device.

Looks like they no longer have Garmin nav? Is that the case?

Re: 2014 8" nav into 2011+ models

IMO, it looks like the software is either Garmin's smartphone app with all the in app purchase built-in, including the NASA terrain views or IGO Primo. Now, their is a tread by some of the aftermarket nav radios that come with IGO Primo built-in, Alpine switched over for the 2012 lineup is one example.

Best for now.
