Good day. I wanted to make a separate thread regarding the back up camera kit for 14' Altitudes. This has been one of my most wanted mods and following many threads about wonky camera kits, customized wiring, and installation blunders, I wanted to share my experience as a MY14 Altitude owner. I have received the 2014-2015 WK2 Back Up Camera Kit Mopar Item #82213884AB. This is the updated kit which is defined by the ending "AB". It can now be found for purchase at:

JustforJeeps
Tascaparts
AllMoparParts (If you have it in stock)
Or by ordering through your local Jeep parts department

Upon receiving the kit I removed the rear brow cover and replaced it with the one off my Altitude. MOFSTEEL did this and info can be found AT THIS POSTING. The reason is because the brow cover that comes with the kit is unpainted and there is a separate chrome JEEP logo that would install into it. Of course I didn't want to paint the part and I also wanted to keep my blacked out JEEP logo. I removed the rear brow from my Altitude and snapped it onto the camera kit applique. I noticed there was some shots of glue/tape on the new camera kit brow applique so I scraped some of the excess off and put new 3M double sided tape down. Installed my rear brow cover to finish it off. To do this I removed my entire rear applique from the Jeep so that I had a good working surface. This required a simple removal of the tailgate interior panel (used some trim tools bought from Harbor Freight), 2 plastic push pins near the side of the rear brow, 16 10mm nuts (8 holding the rear applique and 4 for each of the taillights). Removed the lights and applique without any issue. After doing my brow panel swap I re-installed everything but the interior tailgate panel and the next morning had an appointment with my dealership to wire it all in.

After 4 hours at the dealership I found that the steering wheel control for Cluster menu, volume up/down, and channel surf were no longer available. This brings me to the question of "What the hell changed for the harness?". From what I gather this was the flaw in the previous harness, but it seems like it is not a flaw but rather an oversight from the installer. The dealership was closing so I decided to take my Jeep home. I scheduled another visit but decided to first try on my own to resolute the issue. That is when I found the YouTube user "Dustin Koenning" who posted a camera install video 3of3 which corrects this issue starting at the 3:20 mark in the video 2014 Grand Cherokee backup camera install 3/3

The area of interest is located behind the passenger kick panel which was very easy to access. I popped a couple interior trim pieces out and had all the wiring and connectors visible. Just like in the video, the instruction manual step #46 indicates to insert the blue (bl) wire from the camera kit into pin #45. The confusion is that some people fully remove the blue/orange wire which currently resides at that pin location and taps it off. If you do so the controls will be lost. I found that was exactly what happened, that my installer removed the wire which resides and replaced it with the blue wire from the camera kit. I opened the panel and spliced the wires back together. I didn't solder them but used a wire crimp and connected the stock blue/orange with the camera kit blue wire. Everything works after doing so. :arms:

The rear camera is exactly what I was hoping for. It also has the guidelines and dynamic movement of the lines when the steering wheel is turned. I have the options in my settings menu to turn the camera on delay, turn on/off the guidelines, or activate/deactivate the rear camera use.

Here are a couple images of the finished product on my 2014 Altitude JGC:

There was no sku in the dealership system for the new camera kit installation for the JGC. I was fortunate enough to be speaking with the service manager and he decided to charge me the cost for a Dodge Ram rear camera install. I was truly amazed because the cost was $110. They took about 4 hours for the complete install. The cost included the $60 fee to activate the rear camera through Chrysler Connect.

I'm certain the cost is greater than what I paid but I was their guinea pig.

Hi, I just bought a 2015 GC Altitude. I'm pissed that a backup camera isn't standard. I'm also pissed that it's not already prewired because they will be mandatory next year.

I just called the dealer parts dept. to ask how much. He said there was no B/U camera for the 2015, only the 2014. I then gave him the part number from ALL Mopar Parts.com. He was surprised and then he was able to find it. Now I have to wait for a call back because no one knows what to charge for install. We are not off to a good start here. Wish me luck.

Ok, so I just bought the camera- $335.00 plus tax. Service came to the conclusion that the install will be $495.00 plus tax. So basically a $1000 with tax total. I inquired about activating the Nav.- that's another $600. Now that $495 for install does not include them painting the piece they need to replace that comes with camera attached. But here is my thing- I would rather them drill a hole into the existing piece that has the factory paint. I don't know how the new part freshly painted from their body shop is going to look or how well it will last over time. They aren't sure they want to drill the original part.

So I go back Saturday for install. I'll know more then. This is a lot more of a pain than it needs to be. Jeep should of thought this through and offered at least a wireless option.

Wow. First of all how did you miss the rear backup as an option for the 15' Altitudes?

Second, did you even read through the original post I made? You can easily remove "your fascia trim" and instal it on the new kit (no need to use non painted one).

Third, you should really shop around to other service departments to get install quotes. It will probably vary depending on the service team and their experience.

Jeep did think this through, a little late, which was why you can now add the rear camera as an upgrade option.

Regardless, good luck and let us know what happens.

This is fantastic, thanks! I got my MY14 Altitude at the end of June last summer and had the backup camera and sensors that were available then installed onto my Grand Cherokee when I bought it. I've had stuttering issues with my camera, a poor resolution generally, and no moving lines. I saw MOFSTEEL's build with what looked like the factory installed moving lines etc., and then found this, so I think I'm going to have my backup camera replaced with this one. Might be expensive though, since I imagine the harness probably has to be rewired. It's got to be worth it though; my camera is barely useful now.

Thanks for putting this up!

$1000 OMG!!!

To anyone in Central Florida who needs this done, please contact me.

I've installed it in a couple WK2 and mine's. And my install is as OEM as it get. I believe my install is cleaner than some dealer techs.
To bad you don't live in ny.. Shit!

So today was supposed to be the install date of the back-up camera. Sadly, it's not. Dealership would not separate camera from the backplate that ships (and needs to be painted) to use my already painted part. That requires the part to go to the bodyshop to be painted. That wasn't part of the original quote. I'm not paying $1500 for this, plus I'm not having something painted that will probably fade and is not factory sprayed.

All is not lost. Went to a shop that will install a camera that integrates with the 8.4" head unit. Preliminary quote is $600. I find out more details on Monday when he verifies parts and PACS interface.

Finished the install today...Pretty straight forward. Removed the rear fascia to mount the camera and ran the wire through the back door and grommet into the cargo area. Hardest part was removing the inside trim on the back hatch. Really feels like you're going to break something. Head unit is really easy to remove. Ran everything up front and it works flawless. Camera is decent quality. Very clear in good lighting. Kind of blocky in pitch black situations with just the reverse lights. Overall I'm happy with the install. No dealer activation required, less then $400 and looks factory.

How did you guys pop off the back of the fascia that came with the backup camera? Is it easy to do (something I could do before I took it in to the shop, or at the very least something I could just tell the shop to do and they'd figure it out)? Is it just a matter of getting the screws and washers out and then just popping it off?

I have all the parts for the mods I'm getting done next week in (SRT headlights + harness, 2014 backup camera, taillight bezels, grille inserts, black Gorilla lug nuts/wheel locks, SRT carbon fiber interior trim), and want to make sure my shop knows exactly what to do and how to do it

So prices to install this for the dealer are all over the place. I was quoted about $700+ from two different dealerships because it's supposed to be a 6.5 hour job and their rates are over $100 an hour.
