2014 GC Limited - Sub Upgrade - JL Stealthbox

I wanted to share my experience with the JL Audio Stealthbox upgrade on the Jeep Grand Cherokee with 506 Watt 9 speaker (Alpine inspired) sound system. As many have said the factory 8" sub in plastic enclosure leaves much to be desired. I decided to do the sub upgrade first as its the more expensive and invasive upgrade, then follow that with improvements on the door and satellite speakers following the direction of many members here.

My theory was that by adding a more powerful / higher quality sub, it would allow me to lower the bass level on the head unit EQ, resulting in a reduction of low frequency workload on the door speakers. With less stress on these speakers I hoped it would allow some improvement in overall mid and high level clarity and overall sound quality. Once I got the new sub installed and got everything tuned, I turned the bass level of the EQ down to 0 and in some cases as low as -2. The results were remarkable and proved my theory to be true. I'm certainly not advocating that adding a sub will make the factory speakers suddenly come to life, but it certainly improved their sound quality to the best they can be considering their inferior design and low cost construction. My other goal was to add a significant amount of powerful tight bass to the sound field without reduction of cargo space and keeping with the factory esthetics. The Steathbox by JL Audio delivered on all fronts.

Equiptment Details:
JL Audio Stealthbox with 10W3 (500 Watt sub)
JL Audio XD600 Mono block Amp (600 Watt X 1 @ 2ohm)
LC2i Signal processor
JL Audio Sub level control knob
Dynamat sound isolation

Post Removal of factory sub and enclosure

Application of Dynamat

Stealthbox mounted and panel returned to original position

Amp and signal processor installed

Spare returned (note the passenger side tire storage bin removed)

Finished look of installation

A little later I will provide a photo of the bass control knob installed at the driver position. Please feel free to post any questions or feedback.

*My understanding is this steathbox is compatible with 2011-2015 GC

Overall the bass output of this single 10 rocks!!

Re: 2014 GC Limited - Sub Upgrade - JL Stealthbox

I added a JL Stealthbox to my 2004 Buick Rainier with the GM Bose system back in 05 using their 500 watt mono sub and I echo your thoughts it was awesome. I traded that in on my SRT and honestly I still think it sounded better than my current 19 speaker system.

2014 GC Limited - Sub Upgrade - JL Stealthbox

Great writeup! I bet that thing pounds nicely. I had one in my WK and loved it

I just reinforced my stock sub enclosure with dynamat (only inside the box). The sub sounds a little tighter and less boomy now. Should hold me over until i get a stealth box.

Stealth box is tight and provides that base you can feel in your seat, absolutely love the production from it especially with not losing a bit of cargo room. Quality product from JL Audio as expected!!

As promised, here are the photos of where I installed the sub control knob. Locations to put it were very limited but this spot is hidden away nice yet easily reached from seating position. Driver power seat has full forward throw and the recessed location protects the knob from being inadvertently bumped in most cases.

Very cool. What are the steps to remove the panels to get to sub?

Re: 2014 GC Limited - Sub Upgrade - JL Stealthbox

I bought a custom enclosure that houses 2x 10" subs for my GC as well...just haven't had time to get it all installed

The one I have was designed to go in place of the stock sub and still be hidden behind the panels..

Looking forward to seeing what you think about the JL stealth setup...I almost bought one myself..but then found this one
