Ford-Microsoft partnership continues with software support for Sync 3

---
Greetings,

The operating system from Microsoft is gone and replaced by QNX.

from the article:

For Sync 3, Ford has switched to Blackberry's QNX on-board operating system with a simpler layout, larger fonts, and a touchscreen that moves with a swipe up, down or across, with pinch-to-zoom like modern tablets. The previous MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch systems from Microsoft had suffered from bugs over the years which frustrated customers and dragged down quality scores for Ford's vehicles.

The cloud service will be linked to Microsoft.

Pioneer was using Microsoft operating system, Windows CE for the auto (just as Ford) for the AppRadio 1-3, which turned out to be just as painful as with the Ford's system. When Pioneer introduced the NEX Radio's, they went with QNX as the operating system. A little better, but because you want the apps to be backward compatible as much as possible, you run into problems. At least Uconnect operating system is QNX and that should help to remedy this situation in the long run.

Long story short, for database management to be effective, it still requires a proper operating system. What is the best operating system, that is age old question since the evolution of computers. UNIX, VM, CP/CMS, CP/M, JCL, MS-DOS, VSOS (Wang) and etc.... Today, it is between Windows & Apple's OS X with Google now slowly getting in to the game.

Best for now.

-I agree that you should definitely press Jeep to get the updates out. Remember I am not FCA and I don't defend them on silly things. This is not a "HERE" Problem because the maps have already been provided to Chrysler for the later 2014s and newer.
Greetings,

First and foremost, on behalf of the members of JeepGarge.org, thank you for taking the time and helping providing further insist to this problem for the 2014 folks. Furthermore, for those you do not realize you are also advocating on our behalf.

So if FCA have the maps already, then the real problem with HERE is that they have not updated their own internal system to indicate as such. Do you have any further insight into why FCA has problems getting the update out other than a means of distribution?

I just can not understand why FCA does not come forth with a straight answer instead of the finger pointing.

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

"Here" is the old Navteq, they are contracted to provide maps. Also I should be super clear, I don't know who is supposed to be in charge of the actual release of the maps however "here" is a supplier to Chrysler for the maps originally and they have released updated maps to Chrysler since the start of production (through Harmon). When there is a problem with a part on a vehicle, I realize that the supplier still makes the part but FCA doesn't tell you to call the supplier and complain, they are in control of that relationship. As FCA is still buying maps from "Here" they have some pull. AND trust me if they wanted to publish a map update themselves (FCA) to correct a customer concern, they certainly can.

Not to say that harassing "Here" doesn't help (sorry for all the quotes but the rebranding of that company was just a grammar accident waiting to happen).

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

The business relationship with HERE is very similar to that of the tire companies. FCA/Chrysler/Jeep installs tires on the vehicles they sell, just as they install map databases into the NAV units they sell in their GC's. If you have an issue with your tires you are directed to the tire manufacturer, not FCA/Chrysler/Jeep. In checking the warranty booklet, there is nothing that speaks about navigation map updates. The only thing I can find is the inference that if an owner wants a map update, your are directed to the HERE site which is labeled 'The Official Chrysler Group Uconnect® Map Update Store'. Whether that infers FCA/Chrysler/Jeep is responsible for it is unclear.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Greetings,

The Background:

In reality, HERE (formally called Navteq and still owned by Nokia as of this date) seats on the bottom of the list or the corner of the triangle for the GPS function of the informant (Uconnect). On the other side, we have Garmin, who is solely responsible for writing the software code as per the specifications given to them by extracting what ever data is needed to output as per the specifications. On top of the triangle is Harmon, who is responsible to put all the functions into place for the headunit, which includes using QNX software as the operating system.

FCA is the client and they have outsourced the responsibility to Harmon. So they sit on top of Harmon. In addition, anything produced in the chain becomes the property of FCA. Thus Harmon has to hand over the master copies of the map database as well. Assuming all this is in the contractual agreement between the parties as of today that we are not privy too.

The Problem:

Based on the information provided by Willx, FCA is taking over distribution of the map update and it is in the hands of FCA as of now. As of now, according to we have learned, FCA is working on a solution to find the means of getting the update out to the user base and is currently stuck. What are they stuck on, it could be anything from a hardware issue or a software code issue or is it a combination of both. Then again, why does FCA need to take over the distribution of the update when all these years it has been sanctioned with HERE? A lack of management supervision to maintain quality control between the parties?

At this point, anybody's guess is good as gold as to the exact screw up. :roll eyes: The effect on us, the clock just keeps ticking with no true full response from FCA. What are they afraid of, we can not handle the truth?

Our Goal:

To keep the pressure up and make FCA come out with a statement or the product already. Not in the middle of 2016. Shortly thereafter, the WK3 will be hitting the streets.

Best for now.

I agree it is a similar relation however if the tires started blowing out on the highway and killing lots of people you better believe that jeep would get involved and go after their tire subcontractor with everything they have to figure out the problem. Why because crashing jeeps would give them a bad name ultimitely loosing them money. In the situation with the maps they could careless because they already have our money. So jeep certainly has the ability to get involved with their subcontractors if it benifits jeep and im sure they would, but if it benifits us oh well good luck not their problem.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I have another communication in to HERE. Now that they have the PRODUCT NOT FOUND on their website for the '14 WK2, I've asked if they still support the system. I feel like a 2 year old when dealing with FCA or HERE on this issue. I ask "why?", and they say "because we said so!".

That example is a stretch But it already occurred with the early Ford Explorer, one of which I owned. Both Firestone and Ford had shared responsibility, but neither admitted fault; Ford with their design and Firestone their tires. Firestone eventually recalled their tires, Ford took no action other than to blame Firestone and adjust tire pressure guidance. Fortunately, I never had any problems. What ever the issue with our 2014/2015's, the legal beagles will prevent the owners getting any info until it is resolved, that is the only thing that is certain with this.

Just finished programming my new NUVI for our Shenandoah road trip next month
