I sent an email, I agree map updates should be a lot more frequent especially with our radios having cell capability.

Greetings,

Unfortunately, the Uconnect system does not allow updates via the cellphone. FCA has not brought that technology to us. Us with map updates, they are also behind the times.

Other Car manufactures have gone to having the smartphone connect with the GPS. Chevy has in some vehicles for sometime already and others have followed suit. Here is an example where you can use the factory or an app integrated into the car's touchscreen.

https://www.sygic.com/car-navigation

It is amazing that FCA boost that the Uconnect system is so wonderful. Meanwhile, as I said, other manufactures have better internal processors, screens and at least you can get a map update in a years time instead of 2+.

There has to be a way that we can use the forum to pressure FCA to and talk to HERE about this mess. Soon, the 2016 models will be hitting the road and what map update to they get?

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Based on what I am hearing from corporate contacts, I surmise that no map updates are planned at all for 2014-2016 model years. I am not sure FCA planned this all along, but it seems to be a business decision being made now.

FCA engineers are concentrating efforts on the new Grand Cherokee, which is still it's money maker model. By the time the new redesigned 2017 is rolled out, Apple Car Play and Android Auto will be available, already seemingly preferred by many buyers. Eliminating the custom-designed NAV system will save FCA and other car manufacturer's millions of dollars in design and hardware costs.

I don't think this problem has ever been due to Navteq (Here). It has to be a hardware or software issue with Harman Kardon and FCA. Navteq's entire business is selling map databases, there is no way it doesn't have data available. I think Navteq has been waiting for file structure to know how to build the package.

It suggest the demand for NAV map upgrades is much less than the cost to produce the updates, hence the stalemate. I had an executive assistant question me as to why I needed maps so frequently. I explained that I live in Houston, TX, not Warren, MI. As the fastest growing state and economy, new roads and changes are constant. Uconnect cannot find business addresses that have been in my sales territory for 3 years. New roads and ramp changes are available that could save me 1/2 the time on an old route. Vehicles are now technological machines, we cannot wait 4 years for updated map data. It is a safety issue as much logistical efficiency and customer satisfaction issue.

I just wish FCA was proud enough and secure enough in brand loyalty to be truthful about the REAL reasons and let owners make informed decisions about staying with the brand, going to dash GPS units, etc.

I love driving my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel; after 29,000 miles, I have had only minor issues. However, had I known the MY 2014 NAV was to be abandoned with 2012 maps, I might have considered other brands or at least not wasted money on the Jeep NAV.

Come on FCA, level with us; we are JEEP owners, we can handle the truth!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

What irks me is that Jeep has left us hanging. If they don't plan on updating the maps, the least that they could do is provide access to the Uconnect system so that we could roll our own map updates.

Hopefully iDatalink comes out with a solution soon. Then we have the option of installing a Kenwood Nav until if we want to.

For now, I'm using my portable Garmin 2597LMT.

That better not be true they would be inundated with angry people and im sure law suits if that were ever the case. The more people that complain about this to Jeep the better. An issue with 300 compliants will get very little attention or priority an issue with 300,000 complaints will have their highest attention. Anyone that hasnt yet written the email or made the phone call to jeep add your voice to this nothing will get fixed if no one says anything.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I am not sure why people are so...enamored by the cellphone driven navigation (i.e. Car Play and Android Auto). It adds capability and lowers the costs. True. Such a feature would be awesome for fleet (i.e. car rental; GSA) vehicles. But beyond that, for any premium auto maker out there I imagine it is a bit of a nightmare spelled out as "devolution of control and direction".

There will be phones that do not work (higher end vs. lower end models). There will be a lack of signal or lack of accuracy in areas with poor cell phone reception; urban "canyons" or natural canyons/valleys. There will be map storage issues and data charges. And there will be interface issues, with the occasional freezes, reboots and resets. And there will be dim wits who try to do all this setup while driving and will crash and burn. And the unlucky ones who drop their phones hiking, jogging; those who get their phones stolen and those whose toddlers managed to damage or lock the phones out permanently. I can almost see the lawsuit headlines (meritorious or not).

I am sure that technology will advance and will solve some of these concerns. I recently completed a small project, re-inventing the infotainment in my Subaru. Took all the crap out and installed a Google Nexus 2013 tablet in between the vents. Looks decent. It runs Sygic (the regular Android flavor), from the link above. I don't connect my phone to it - the maps are downloaded straight into the tablet. It runs music, it runs Torque, it runs another app for speed cameras. But they crash (especially Sygic) and require touching and retouching of the screen (or the mousepad). The GPS signal is not that good once I am down town Chicago. Anyone from Seattle here? I was in Seattle last year, neither my wife's Sprint nor my T-Mobile phone had any good GPS coverage down town.

Somehow the navi on my Jeep works in urban canyons. From Dearborn Str. in Chicago to the trail in Wyoming, it didn't fail to position me on a map (when it worked). It is probably due to the combo of 3G/GPS, dead reckoning algorithms and the data input from the chassis (speed, steering angle signifying a change of direction, etc.). Until technology catches up with that, I don't think I will jump on-board.

That being said, I wish we were given a choice to download and install maps directly from the map makers; in fact I wish we were given a choice of navigation engines for the built-in infotainment.

Greetings,

This is the current tread with other car manufactures. As I posted previously, Sygic is hooked up with Honda, Jag and Land Rover. IGO Primo is has started to release their systems for both OE and aftermarket that have the NavFusion technology built-in. I cannot remember right now the name, but their is a lock pick system that can accept a external based Navi unit that uses IGO Primo and it setup for the NavFusion. From my understanding, Garmin has one for sometime, but I am not sure when they are releasing it or if they have an OE lined up.

Right now the choice of navigation engines that will totally intergratged with both CarPlay and Android Auto via the 3rd party apps will take some time before they are released. Which is why I have no plans as of now to get a CarPlay aftermarket HU. I know at least on the IOS side, some of the developers are fighting with Apple to loosen the requirements in order for their respective products to work as before.

If you use an on-line navi apps, then the cellphone reception becomes a factor. Whereas, the off-line navi apps is not a problem. With regards to the GPS antenna, that is based on your cellphone. Or, if your cellphone permits, you can use an aftermarket antenna.

Best for now.

Greetings,

The last time I spoke to them sometime ago, they were not sure if the were going to pursue it. With the 8.4 and 5.0 units having the Uconnect built-in into the headunit, the cost to develop something was looking extremely hi as well the cost of selling a solution if possible.

iDatalink had a forum member here by the name of 12volt guy. I have not seen any posts from for sometime.

Best for now.

Greetings,

The problem with FCA's Multimedia unit which is interconnected with the Uconnect company, the accolades they have received has gotten to their heads. It is the same story with the 18 inch tires for the off-road packages. Once it is written in stone by them, that is it, the customers have no say in the matter. The worst part is they probably believe that the map update effects a small niche.

For those going to the New York International Auto Show starting this Friday, speak up and let them know more and more complaints are coming in. If you are on another Jeep Forum besides JEEPGARAGE.ORG , spread the word. For those here, as SILVERMAX04 points out, the create amount of complaints will get some VP's attention. If does not effect you, still sing out for your fellow members.

For over 2 years, the OP has tired and nothing happened except for pass the buck.

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I don't see the 2015's listed on FCA's site for the NAV updates. Would they presumably be running the same version as the '14's right now?

Thanks

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Good points made by all. I remember being at my brother's home in rural Oklahoma late one moonless night in misting rain. My brother led me there during the day, but with no cell signal, only GPS navigation could get me back to Tulsa. In the metro areas, we take cell signal for granted, the satellites are more reliable overall.

I still prefer the in-dash system we just need a better way of getting maps. I don't want to come back to a broken window because I forgot to take the portable unit off of the dash for a business lunch appointment. Thieves don't care what damage they cause, the peace of mind and convenience of the in-dash is still worth the premium price.

JEEP executives, you were on the right path, you have one of the most intuitive systems available, let's get the customer service issue resolved and build more brand loyalty- give us the ability to update our maps.

Except for the map update issue, I have been very pleased with my 2014 Summit. So much in fact, that we were about to buy my wife a new one. We will have to rethink this if Jeep intends to screw me on the maps.
