Greetings,

It just takes time and money. If Jeep decides to switch to TomTom, then they have to recode the I/O to read that format. It has been done before with other GPS apps.

Also I really doubt if Garmin is going to do it since they know the H.E.R.E. data definitions inside and out. Besides, is FCA going pay for it? They just as well put the full blown version that you find on the Garmin PND 3597, Kenwood DNN 992 and their smartphone app.

Oh, FCA what did you do to us.

Best for now.

Greetings,

It is a question on what you do with the data. And that is up to the software developer, who then has determine if the client's budget allows for the bells and whistles.

The 3D terrain features that Garmin uses incorporates data from H.E.R.E map and then references with a NASA terrain database. I do not believe the JGC has those features. With my smartphone from Sygic, I am not sure who they use on the 3D terrain features. All I know, it does a nice job interrupting the topography.

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Greetings,

Getting back on course with JeepGarage.Org GPS system in thread, if you have not so and you have access to Facebook, please submit your 2 cents into this saga asking oh oh were are the maps? It will look better if some fresh people are on it instead of the usual gang of suspects.

2015 (KL) Jeep Cherokee
2015 (LA) Dodge Challenger
2015 (ZD) Dodge Viper

Greetings,

If these FCA vehicles are running the same database as the 2014, then they are also subject same problems down road with 2014? Based on what you found out for us, 2014 is subject to a distribution problem. The 2015 are also going to be subject to a distribution problem?

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Keep in mind there is a difference between being committed to a software platform and being willing/able to upgrade any given unit in the field.

Best for now.

Depends on what the actual issue is. If it is a problem where the hardware is sized OK for the existing sw, but not big enough for the update (as a hypothetical example), then if they were all running the same hw, then yah, we'd all be in the same boat. But if in this example, the hardware varied, then potentially we could be on our own.

I sent emails to "consumer reports" and motor week" If anyone wants to do the same email address and submission page are below. I highlighted the fact that we all realize that 1-1.5 year lag for in dash map updates is considered "normal" in industry but this situation is more unique as we are passing the point of 3 year old maps which is not normal or acceptable. I recommend making this distinction so we are not grouped with complaining about the normal 1-1.5 year lag on in dash systems of most other manufacturers which unfortunately is just the way it is and has been for all. Remember the more noise and the more emails the more likelihood of someone taking notice of the issue.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Accepting there is an expected 1 to 1 1/2 year lag in map updates, which I find preposterous, it would appear that there was never an update for the 2014 model year; the maps used for the 2013 were just loaded onto the units we have; I have 4qtr 2012. Makes me believe even more that whomever is responsible for developing the updates never developed an update process for the new units in MY2014+.

I agree a 1-1.5 year lag as a "normal" for indash maps is bullshit but that is often ( not always) the approximate update cycle on these indash systems throughout the auto industry. Fighting an update cycle like that you are taking on nearly all manufacturers and that is a much larger issue but i agree it is definitely an issue.

The case we have with these 2014+ GCs is that FCA is just sitting back and accepting double that as we are now passing 3 years, this is a more unique situation to our 2014-2015 GC and other similar uconnect 8.4. FCA needs to be called out specificlly for allowing this as it falls far outside the so called "normal" for indash maps.

I agree also there have been no map updates at all on the 8.4AN. When was this system on the drawing board, probably at least 5 years ago and no one gave a thought on how to deliver a map update to it? Could they really be that incompetent? That is what i find as completely unbeilevable and unacceptable in this day and age. FCA specifically needs to be held accountabld for this.

One of the unanswered questions; who determines the update cycle. I would imagine an auto mfg, say FCA, decides that 1-1 1/2 years is what they will use and then contracts with the map provider, HERE, to provide updates within that schedule. Without knowing for certain that is the case, but assuming it is, it is then HERE's responsibility to meet the contract requirements. Perhaps FCA and HERE do not have a contract for 2014+ MY's. A lot of unknowns and until FCA proves otherwise, they are the big bad wolf. Their silence is deafening. I have had no response from any correspondence sent to FCA, and really do not expect any.

Latest I have read regarding the sale of HERE, is that Nokia has stated they may decide NOT to sell the unit once the review is completed.
