Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Greetings,

I thought that part of the Southern Tier was changing from Route 17 to I-86?

Best for now.

It will all be 86 eventually after all the upgrades along the entire route are done.

Right now, it's still State Route 17 in a lot of places. Only the upgraded portions that remove intersections have been re-dubbed Interstate 86. Those sections are mostly 65MPH now, too.

They had to change the name because of the way the number systems work:

State Routes are odd numbers East and West and even numbers North and South.

Interstates are even numbers East and West and odd numbers North and South.

Because Route 17 was a state highway, it was an odd number running East/West. The trick is, 17 dips into Pennsylvania for several miles. That allowed NY State to have it re-classified as an interstate route and get federal grant money to upgrade it to interstate standards.

That meant they had to upgrade exit rams that didn't meet federal standards (such as private roads running directly on and off the highway) along with removing intersections with traffic lights, such as around Parksville/Cooley to the East of Binghamton and Corning to the West.

Once all those upgrades are complete, the highway can be completely changed over to I-86.

I can comment on this... "Here" when publishing a Garmin update will publish their 2016.1 map in the 4th quarter of 2014. In Fact that data internally is time stamped as 2014Q2. The Jeeps actually show you both pieces of information. The first part is the cut off of the map submission data the "2012Q2" that you guys see or in some cases the 2012Q4. So don't loose your minds when you see that this is 2014Q2 Data.... Look at the build date which is the last part of the number. More than likely it shows a build date a minimum of 6 months after the map data time stamp. I have included a sample of one such update... I believe the update that is being released is actually 2 generations newer with a compile from last month.

In "Here's" Garmin update, this would have been published as 2014.3 or 2014.4 (and maybe even 2015.1) but it uses the exact same map data.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I too am interested to see just how up to date the maps will be. Just this weekend I was on highway 34 that connects interstate 29 (in Iowa) to highway 75 (in Nebraska). Construction on this finished in October I believe. Google maps has it, it would be nice if the new map update did, because it's a much quicker route than taking a toll bridge further south. Brand new stretch of road and a bridge across the Missouri River.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

On a side note... there was some chatter at HO, so I think more than one of you got through to Jeep/FCA. I honestly think all of your efforts had an impact, as the date posting on "Here" was apparently a specific request.

Greetings,

I have not been up that way in about 10 years now. I do remember heading west after Binghamton on 17 and hitting the lights after coming off I=380. Once it turned into I-86W after sometime, it was smoothing sailing to I-390 N.

A truck driver told at the 1st rest stop in NY this would be a faster way to Niagara Falls. He was right.

Thanx,

Best for now.

Greetings,

Let us hope that the 18th is going to be reality for a change.

I still think we should keep up the pressure to make sure we are serious.

Best for now.

Take it with a grain of salt, it has some attention but there may be delays... anyone who bought a 2014 GC diesel knows about delays

I'm under the theory that the amount of salt we may need to consume may give us all heart attacks.

Then again, some of us might have one if this actually comes to pass - especially if it includes real map updates and not just software tweaks.
