Makes sense, but the only solution I see if this is actually the case is a hardware upgrade from Jeep or adding the capability to store the maps on external memory. I doubt either will happen. Hoping this is not the case, but with little details on the problem from HERE or Jeep, it sure seems likely.
Greetings,

Now this make perfectly good sense. Since the GPS in the JGC uses graphic details for 3D building, the data does take up a far amount of storage. From the time of the 2014 map data to the present, their has been a significant increase in the data size.

The other factor that backs this up, is the research that member SEEINGWHITE has done. This member here strongly believes that the 2014 units were under powered in terms of processor speed and storage. The 2015 units most likely had a storage increase to compensate for the 2015 map data. So the question now for the 2015 base, is the storage big enough to handle any map data increases?

If this is the case amount the physical storage being the issue, I do not see FCA presenting a solution. The only 2 solutions to this problem then is the PND's such as Garmin or TomTom. With 2nd solution being your smartphone tied into a lock pick system.

Best for now.

If that is the case the third solution of them replacing the 2014 8.4AN units with a 2015 is the solution i will demand from them. I wont accept them abandoning a brand new unit like this that we paid thousands for as an option. I m not sure im buying this reason yet, I cant believe that their systems planning could have been that poor on a new setup like this. Time will tell but i also dont believe that they could be so ignorant to think that they could just not do an update ever and that people would be ok with that. Things change fast now a days but the NAV system cant go end of life before your first oil change people wont accept that.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I have my doubts, but I think I recall Garmin changing their update to smaller coverage areas being loaded at one time when I updated City Navigator for the NUVI earlier this year, so it may have some merit. I've had no capacity issues for the 8 years I've owned the NUVI, but at some point there must be a limit that is reached.

Greetings,

Yes, I a third solution could happen as you said. I never looked into that. The only concern will be if the storage solution on the 2015 is big enough for the future map updates.

In the old days with Chrysler when it came to the Audio, they were on of the easiest car company's to deal with. Now a days, they have done a complete opposite.

Best for now.

Greetings,

The biggest problem with the map data occurs with 3D building and terrain features. Those 2 eat up the storage with every new update. Terrain in particular will eat up storage as the clarity improves over time. I noticed that on my navi app.

Older models such as yours should not be problem.

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

From the info on the web, this is what the system consists of.

"Uconnect Access features 16 GB of eMMC flash for the operating system, maps, and apps."

Texas Instruments OMAP-DM3730 And Uconnect Access

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Greetings,

With 16 GB of storage should not be a problem, at least in theory. Qnx does not take up much space, the worse case on the map data is 2 GB. The rest of the apps including the Uconnect can not be that much more even with the GC's HVAC controls and other stuff be controlled via the Uconnect.

Unless Jeep made a design change from what was described in the article. Or the Uconnect updates increased in their size preventing for future map upgrades.

Best for now.

Be nice to know how much memory each of those gobbles up. I know that my 10 year old garmin had 2 GB and it was running 2014 maps when I sold it with the car.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I decided to try one more time contacting Jeep support regarding the map updates. Still waiting to hear from HERE. Looks like I'll be using the NUVI for a while.

Jeep support response to my original query;

"Thank you for contacting the Jeep Customer Assistance Center regarding
your 2014 Grand Cherokee.

I regret the problem your vehicle has experienced with the navigation
and appreciate the time and effort you took to bring this matter to my
attention.

In regards to updates for your media center you would have to speak to
HERE as they provide all software updates to our media centers. They should be able to provide a timeline when you can expect a software update.

Comments like yours are one way we have to learn of problems that may
develop and improvements desired by customers. I will certainly pass on
your suggestion of using Garmin for navigation services.

Thank you again for your email. Should you require additional assistance,
or have any new information to provide, please reply to this email message or call 1-877-I-AM-JEEP (1-877-426-5337).

Sincerely,

Linda"

My follow-up;

" Thank you for the quick response. I have contacted HERE on several
occasions regarding an update for the Navigation maps, with a poor
response each time. I have attached my last two responses from them. When I check their update web site all that is shown there is a cryptic message. Neither contacting them or their web site provides any useful information regarding when an update might occur, what will be in it or why it has been delayed for so long.

Given that the use of HERE was decided upon by FCA/Chrysler/Jeep, I
would think Jeep would have interest in finding out what is causing their
customers such poor service. I have sent another query to HERE and have
also attached that email. I am now using my eight year old Garmin NUVI
for navigation in our Grand Cherokee; it is up to date with maps from the
beginning of the year. If an eight year old navigation system can be
kept updated I find it difficult to understand how my 2014 Grand Cherokee has to continue to use maps that are three years old. In my opinion, Jeep
needs to become involved as it is there customer base being inconvenienced."

Good email, we should all send similar to jeep. Emailing HERE is worthless they are clues and could careless. Inundating jeep with complaints is the best route, at some point they will hopefully take notice. Getting jeep to rattle HEREs cage as a non performing subcontractor is how we can hope this will play out. In dash systems are often on 1-1.5 year update cycle but at 3 years sitting on 2Q 2012 maps in our GCs has passed the point of reason.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I will also be contacting Jeep to voice my displeasure, as I've also got a 2014 JGC Ltd. No reason why they can't do any one of a number of things, to allow updates. One would be to break the US database into seperate segments that we could choose which one we wanted. I would load "Eastern US" for example, and someone else may want midwest, or western states. Not everyone needs the whole US all the time.

They could also reduce the size of the file by eliminating some of the 3D graphics. Would you rather have out of date maps with 3D, or up to date maps with 2d or flat maps?

So it just seems to me that Jeep is taking our money, and abandoning us.
