There is that little, um...VIN...thing that totally prevents that. $149 has been the standard map update price for previous model years, too. The cost for my wife's Outback is over $200 for that map update... Nature of the beast.

Placed order, no problems - we'll see how it goes when I get the update(s) and try to install them.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Now honestly, I really don't need the map updates as we haven't really any construction addons in the areas I travel but have general interest as I do own a GC and would like to see updates sooner than every 2-3yrs. I've been reading this thread just seeing where things have been with it and all the people complaining that they want the maps. Some people have really been putting the pressure on HERE and FCA to get these now. Now that the maps are out, a few have now decided to wait (which is probably a good thing until more information is provided) while it seems the majority of others have gone silent. I'd like to see the ones who have really been trying to push this issue go get the update right away instead of waiting on it. I'm not trying to start anything with anyone, your just getting what you have been asking for so now run and get it.

I wouldn't say "nature of the beast" when many standalone models offer free lifetime updates.

$149 is more than the cost of one of those devices that not only includes those updates, but gets them out more often.

For the price we pay for these vehicles, along with the price of the Navi system on top of it, we should be getting a much better price than $149 for at least the term of the vehicle warranty. The roads and routes don't change based on brand. If you can't price competitively, get out of the way of those that can.

Unfortunately, that is why they want to lock this stuff down: so crowd and open source maps don't find their way into the system the way they've done on smart phones. If that ever happens, the pay system will completely implode.

I should point out, I use an open source system on my smart phone and have yet to have any accuracy issues. I would have no worries at all about a similar system on my vehicle - especially if some of those contributors were Jeep owners. If that happened, we might actually get off road mapping, too.

I just think people are starting to get sick of the pay model that produces an inferior product...or at least one that is not noticeably better. People used to fear open source, but now it's often a better solution.

It also often has accountability to the actual contributors, not just to an anonymous collection of employees at a company.

Ask the folks at Encyclopedia Britannica how trying to sell what Wikipedia gives away has worked out for them.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Ordered.

Thanks for the info in this thread. Otherwise I might still be staring at the page trying to figure out where to find the request code. That's totally non-obvious IMO. It sounds like this is really a navigation unit hardware key or something like that.

FWIW, I'm one of those who prefers to update the maps, but is OK with the frequency coming every couple of years, although I *DO* prefer if the updates do, at some point come.

They have been responding so it might help things move along.
I try to be understanding because I realize people are people and mistakes can happen but what bothered me about it was the reps tone and insistence that I most definitely didn't currently have navigation in my jeep and I had not been using it the last two years because it wasn't activated, that was when I ended it and went up to the supervisor who was very friendly and fixed and refunded the money. So kudos to the supervisor for quickly and nicely correcting the situation she was given by a rude rep.

Anyway I did just have message from the supervisor that my order and code finally got confirmed and is being shipped. she updated the shipping to expedited for the trouble so I should have it Friday. She did say at the end that if it didn't work be sure to call them back which just made me laugh at this point lol.

I should point out, several of us can't even get the map update at all with the system.

Further, I'm holding off because I absolutely never install day one or even week one software on anything. I'm waiting to see how those who are willing to taken on for the team fair, then I'll jump in - assuming the system actually lets me do so.

The fact that the online processing seems screwed up makes me wonder what their update will do to my nav system. If they can't even get the selling part right for people willing to buy....

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I just ordered my map update. I didn't see whether I was getting an SD card, USB stick, or DVD.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Just ordered online, quite easy really. Note they offered free shipping but they stuffed me at checkout. I got on to their CHAT and they said they would credit me the $3.95 shipping.

It appears you get a DVD, instruction booklet and a manual, so will probably have to transfer to a thumb drive.....

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Their website says you get
"1 Software USB
1 Map Update USB
1 User Manual"

I am wondering what is the software usb? Is this going to change the function and features of our head units?

Of course I could call them, and get 6 different answers, but I have not called them about this yet.

They are supposed to be calling me back when they get an answer from FCA about what the map date is.

Heck, my maps in my 2014 Overland, were 18 months old when it rolled off the production line, and now currently 3 years old.
