I expect to receive my update by Friday. I am now very curious what it contains. I have a simple test. All Maine's interstate speed limits were increased over a year ago. They are correct in my Garmin update around Dec-Feb of this year. I will check that as soon as I can.

Thanks again for your help. I actually feel much more optimistic.

Tom
I too am interested in the Maine updates. Not because I live there but because I drive through Maine on the way to NB Canada when I go home to visit family. The speed limits have changed, there is the new NB border crossing, and route 1 in NB is now a divided highway (Jeep thinks that I am offroading).

REAL TIME UPDATES via a network connection.

That would be the only way to keep updated to new roads and other changes. Heck, here is SoCal there is one new road that doesn't show up and another opening soon that will also not be on my map system.

Pathetic given the available technology.
i dont think it's realistic that we have the real time data that google maps (or apples product?) has.

Google maps dont actually reside on your phone (normally)- when you ask it to route it asks their server to send the latest data at the moment and the phone downloads everything at that time (might look in the cache from recent downloads and may only get some nearby local data and download more as you travel- but basically it gets fresh data everytime).

Uconnect has 3g on sprint and I'm sure that FCA didn't arrange for tons of data like this would entail.

So real time maps isn't what i'd expect they could realistically pull off.

BUT there's no reason that they couldn't build systems so that once a month/quarter the vehicle gets updates in the background as sprints network traffic and coverage permits (or they could send it over the sat radio, or as a USB download for people outside the footprint(S))

That's a realistic approach they should strive for.

I wouldn't bet that at all.

I suspect it will be daily/real time data updates just as it's always been. But the amount of changes they publish each day will be much smaller as they need to moderate everything themselves now. This is how it originally was years ago- you had to "report a problem" and then they investigated and corrected it- sometimes days, weeks, or evern months later till they got to it.

But still the data will constantly be updated- just with a much larger daily backlog.

(I think they were attempting to figure out a way not to moderate every last change themselves but after the "edit" that made the white house into <insert racist comment here> I suspect that aint gonna happen anytime soon- they'll be moderating everything for a while...)

so same frequency but less quantity each time.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

question for those in the know-

do the POI's and the maps need to be updated at the same time? Years ago i had a tom tom- there was a point when 3rd parties could supply their own POI files- which i assume used lat/long to get indexed into the map data? I specifically recall being able to go to the dunkin donuts website and download a file with all the Dunkin Donut's and Baskin Robins and import them onto the tomtom.

So why to they need to be put together in a process that takes many months?

Actually if unconnect could fix the POS that is yelp/bing search and replace it with say google search then they wouldn't even need POI's in the map data. You could just search with uconnect whenever you want.

I searched today for "ice cream"- it gave me "panchero's mexican" restaurant and a local diner in the list but couldn't figure out to include the ice cream only place i was looking for which has been in business the same location since the dawn of time. The Yelp app is such a piece of crap. Took out my phone and googled it...

Greetings,

At the same time, Hyundai will be offering CarPlay. However, I rather have a JGC over any 4x4 from Hyundai.

Just my 2 cents.

Best for now.

Trying the update. FYI definitely taking more than 45 min for me. I gave over an hour to get it done just in case, and I'm only at 62% progress after 50 minutes...

I am sure am with you on the 4x4 SUV choice between Hyundai and Jeep. When it comes to cars though, the Hyundai Genesis runs circles around the comparable top offerings from Chrysler.

Greetings,

On the Genesis, yes. I am also hearing that Hyundai is starting to develop quality control issues as well.

What vehicle is problem free. I remember my dad's 73 Pontiac LeManns was in the dealer a few times during the first 2 or 3 years. After that it ran beautifully till around 1990.

Best for now.

Thumbs up Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I got mine today. I reflashed the OS (it had been a little buggy), and it only took about 13 minutes. The nav update was slower (especially as it got into the <70% completion area), taking about 80 minutes.

Definitely not seeing some of the newest roads, like NC-140 outside of Wilmington (October 2014) or the addition of the I-495 designation to US-64/264 outside of Raleigh (April 2014). However, I do see some improvement, like the addition of the rest (for now) of NC-540 outside of Raleigh (Dec 2012) and the correction of some road numbering near my home (small thing, but it called part of US-64, like the Dare Bridge, US-64/264, a designation that was several years outdated). Other small gripe: I wish it showed all limited-access/Interstate quality highways as the same type of road. Doesn't seem to have changed in this update.

Just wanted to give you some NC examples. I'll keep an eye on speed limits, etc. It definitely seems like this update's data is about year to a year and a half old or so. Let me know of any thing in particular you have a question about, and I can try to look it up.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Question - once you input a destination address, how is the routing inside the dash shown? Are the intersection pictograms still messed up showing "T" intersections instead of cross roads?
