2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Assuming there are "issues", I wonder if the issue might be the time-out during the update.

I wonder what happens if things shut down in the middle of the update.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Map Update regarding Central Maine. Realize that I do not use navigation in my small town, so I would not be aware of most local map errors.

Today, I went on a 40 mile round trip to check two known errors - Interstate speed limits and a local one-way road error I was aware of. The following is what I found on this short trip.

1 - All Interstate 95/295 speed limits were increased over a year ago and my Garmin was updated correctly 6 months ago. The latest Jeep update HAS NOT UPDATED these. The speed limits are still wrong.

2 - A town street was changed to one-way several years ago. This was still two-way in the old Jeep map but it IS CORRECT in the latest map update.

3 - While making this loop, my nav screen turned black and displayed a message "You are entering an area with unverified data" and I had to hit "OK" to clear the message. This happened 4 times on this 40 mile loop.

So, the question is - was the update worth it?

First, I had to ask myself, is the Jeep map accurate enough for me to leave my Garmin at home and rely on the Jeep Nav, especially on long trips? My answer is no. History says we won't see another Jeep map update for 2-3 years so the inaccuracies will get worse over time, while I am getting 3-4 Garmin map updates per year.

I do realize that most roads are correct and the Jeep Nav will get me where I am going in most cases. Further, I read that the Jeep POI's may be more current than the map.

So, the map update cost more than half the price of a new Garmin. So, was it worth it? I have two answers - 1) For me, I will continue to use a Garmin for navigation and POI searches. The update is too expensive for what you get. Further, with the passenger not being able to search for restaurants, rest areas, gas, or hotels while moving, really limits the Jeep Nav system on long trips (drove 48,000 miles in just over 2 years). 2) For me, I am glad I updated the map because it will better serve as my backup if I forget my Garmin or if my Garmin fails along the way.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I updated the map data on my 2011 RER unit in 2013. Shortly thereafter, I (and many others) discovered that there was a problem in the software which disabled the travel link function of the head unit. HERE (then NAVTEQ) and Jeep both denied responsibility. When the issue was finally resolved, NAVTEQ said that since it had been more than 90 days, no refund or replacement would be made, I'd have to pay the full amount ($149) for an updated copy of the software which would fix the problem.
I'm hanging loose about updating my '14 navigation until I'm sure it's stable.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

This is really turning into a "buy your ticket, take your chances" deal with FCA and HERE. Seems like the Uconnect nav product is something neither company is interested in standing behind. Looks like I'll be looking for a different solution for nav the next time I buy a vehicle. In the mean time, I'm holding off installing the update, and keeping my Garmin up to date and in the console. My money could probably have been spent better than giving it to HERE.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I am surprised they set the date back to May 26. Strange.

If I had heard about "major problems", I would not have installed the update. I hope that the problems are only related to navigation and not other functions like the radio and controls.

Only the map data was updated - the included firmware is the same as what we all had installed already, so no change to software.

Put another way, you have a newer version of a movie but there has been no change to your TV or Blu-ray player.

When I was considering getting the update I asked the question if the nav could be restored to the previous version if there were issues. A reply indicated that the dealer could do that; pretty sure those posts are in this thread somewhere. I chose to wait on the update for several reasons.

Thanks. If I do experience problems, I will check with the dealer.

I hope you're right. However, I remember about a month after getting my Jeep, I was passing through a major city and came up to a detour. As I turned off the interstate highway, my Jeep Nav system locked up hard. I could not do anything with it. I pulled off the road, turned the car off, waited for the display to go black and restarted. Didn't help. I repeated and this time I opened and closed the door. That cleared it. So I am not sure a major Nav system failure couldn't affect other systems.
