Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

OK, I just got off the phone with HERE support. It was a little confusing, but I took notes, and I'll try to keep it as short and sweet as possible. I explained to Trent, from the HERE customer service center, what's been discussed on the forum, and what has been published on their website. I explained that I had reservations installing the map update they had sent me because of the issues that have been presented. I asked if the install failed, what were my options. After talking to his supervisor, this is what he relayed to me. The problem they are encountering with the update is that people are having problems downloading the update and transferring it to a thumbdrive. I told him it was never available as a download. He then said people were having problems installing the update to their vehicles, but that if I had a drive prepared by them, I had a 99% chance of success. I asked him if it wasn't successful, what could I do, and he said my dealer should be able to revert my system back to the original map data and software. I asked if I could get a refund in case of a fail, and he said that is not their normal policy, but that I could request an RMA (return merchandise authorization), and they would probably grant it. Finally, he said that they are trying to find a better delivery method for the update, and that is why they pulled it and keep pushing out the availability date. So, it's my opinion that I'm holding a pig in a poke, and I'll only know the outcome if I attempt the install. There are no guarantees from HERE, and they may leave me twisting in the wind. And of course, the dealer could do the same, as this is third party code. The argument could be made that HERE is contracted by FCA, but we already know they don't play well together. I know at least two folks have done the install successfully, and no one has complained it failed, or did any harm to the radio. I'm going to give it a try next week sometime, and I'll report back with my experience.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I received the update and installed yesterday, no surprises, took about 1-1/2 hours with 2014 JGC Summit idling while I was doing yard work. Local maps appear to have more detail, instructions say that cell phones will have to be re-paired but phones and all settings did not appear to have changed. All was 100% OK with my update.

That is somewhat reassuring to understand that this major problem they are talking about is likely just the jeep timing out in run mode.

I think you will be fine loading it just stay with it and when it times out just quickly cycle the start switch back to run before it powers out. You can also increase that power out timer like some one was talking about above. When mine powered out it just picked up where it left off, thats something to avoid but it didnt brick the uconnect which was good.

Im still amazed that this uconnect was probably on the drawing board at least 5 years ago and FCA until now seems to have given little thought or tested how to up date the maps on it. How can they just be discovering the timeout issue? FCA just trying one test install in one jeep would have revealed that timeout

I'm guessing you opened and shut the door during the install (unless you climbed out and in the window ). Did you notice any effect from that? When I did my Uconnect updates I always left the engine running for either heat or air, but didn't leave the vehicle.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Yes, when doing the update I opened and closed the door a few times checking on status.
Procedure was. . . open door, get in drivers seat, close door, insert thumb drive #1 = update to Uconnect not required, removed 1st thumb drive, inserted thumb drive #2, waited for screen to select "YES" for update to newer version, watched it get to 2% of Unit 2 done, opened door, left vehicle, closed door (left it running), opened and closed door occasionally checking status, finally it was done, followed instructions to turn off, open and close door, wait 60 seconds, started again, OFF again, open and close door and wait another 60 seconds and all was OK with newer navigation version.

I pulled off the road, turned the car off, waited for the display to go black and restarted. Didn't help. I repeated and this time I opened and closed the door. That cleared it. So I am not sure a major Nav system failure couldn't affect other systems.

Pro tip: if you (or your passenger) push the Mute and Browse/Enter button together and hold them for 10-15 seconds, the system does a hard reboot, even while driving, basically just like doing a full power cycle as you described, just quicker and without having to turn the Jeep off.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I also installed the map update the day I received it from HERE and so far have found no problems with it. The update took about 70 minutes and I left the vehicle running the entire time so there were no timeout problems. In general I have always chosen start the vehicle and let it run for all updates just so I don't have to worry about timeouts. So far everything has worked as expected. The map display does seem to be smoother than before and local detail is better. So far all of the speed limits have been correct. Time will tell how up to date the map really is.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Did my map update. About an hour and 20 mins. Left running. Opened/closed door a few times to no noticeable impact.

So... no speed cameras with the U.S. map update like they have in Australia?

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Just finished the installation. Took 70 minutes. I left the engine running, no problems. I'll see how it functions, and what improvements I can find during the coming week.
