I'm not sure that's an assumption we can make at all.

This is based on the apparently vague guesses some CSR reading from a script made, and who was wrong on several of them.

You may very well be correct. Although, when reading the instructions supplied by HERE with the update, it does imply that the installation should be completed with the ignition in the run position, and not to start the engine during the process. This would lead people to set themselves up for a power time out. I know the sample subset represented here is small, but it seems that no one installing the update with the engine running has had a problem. On the other hand, doing the update without the engine running can present issues with time outs, and door openings during the rather long procedure. Also, tapping the brake could cause a problem (this is mentioned in the instructions).

I have to agree that when talking to HERE CSRs it's obvious they are only working from an ill prepared script, even when consulting their supervisors.

From my experience, I now would not hesitate doing the update with the engine running. I even exited and entered the vehicle several times with no problem.

I really think Jeep/Here needs to figure out a way that during a software update the vehicle can go into a bypass mode where RUN (with engine off) doesn't shut off before the update is done. That way owners wouldn't have to be watching their vehicles the whole time or actually run the engine for 45-90 minutes using up fuel, also idling that long without moving probably isn't best for a vehicle.

I said it was likely the reason, no guarantee that was the actual issue they are talking about, at some point possible assumptions can be thrown out there on available information and experience with this. So far the only issue anyone on here has reported with the update is the time out issue, which isn't really much of an issue but more of an inconvenience, is other stuff going on, could be but this is all we currently know about or have seen with our limited testing. For that matter do we even know that there is an issue at all ? it was the same clueless CSR reps reading from a script that stated there was an issue in the first place maybe there is no issue and they simply sold out on the first day which would not be a surprise given the way the HERE outfit seems to operate.
could be any number of things but likely scenario IMO is that they only bench tested it and no one bothered to stick it in a real jeep to discover the time out problem so now all the directions they got with them are wrong, again just my opinion. I have been testing it for several hundred miles now with out any new issues, but who knows the system could brick at any point, though at this point I doubt it, if it does if goes back to jeep to put a new one in it.

So while im rambling here are a few things I have noticed about the update.

-it did update and fix 2 of the 3 highway mapping problems I had. will test the third in the next several weeks to see if my jeep still shows driving in the ocean. so far so good on that actual map data.

-the system logic is still mental no improvement on this. on a strait shot down a clear highway it still sometimes will direct me to exit through a few miles of mindless back roads only to inject me right back onto the same clear highway, this is with all avoidance turned off. going to continue to look at this.

I agree, a simple setting option to disable automatic shutoff in run mode without actual running, with a warning it is on displayed in EVIC; call it Update Mode. Doesn't sound too difficult to do.

how long did you "shutdown for"?

once things go dark the radio apparently goes to a sleep sort of mode for some seconds. (if you have a usb drive with an LED- you can watch the LED stay lit for some time until it actually shuts down- or i think opening the door kills it ASAP) I think if you restart/cycle ignition during that time then the radio never turns off and just does it's thing. But i'd be curious if it totally died and went back to the "accept" screen.

I wonder what the bottle neck is. Is it that the USB port is slow as dirt? If so they could figure out a way to copy the data from the USB to the radio and then run the update from there.

But i really have no idea.

Just seems incredibly long for what I'd guess is basically a file copy operation to overwrite the existing database files.

Anybody luck on the map update drive- is it also an ISO file like a sowftware update?

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Got around to doing the map upgrade today, at about 98-99% complete it displayed an error. Worked OK second time around - both done with Jeep running.

Looking forward to seeing what's new.

That's one thing Microsoft did well for Ford. Right from day one everything is on an SD card you receive with the new car. You, or your salesman, plugs it into the slot. The SD card remains in the slot. When it is time to update (I was told) you get a new SD card. All you do is pull out the old and plug in the new.

HERE it seems is having a problem with the delivery of the information, not the information itself. Maybe they never expected the '14s to be on the road long enough to need an update.
