Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Hello,

Tonight I discovered that Nokia, Navteq and HERE are all linked together. I then decided to look at history.

- 1 October 2007, Nokia announced they would acquire Navteq for US 8.1 billion.

- In 2011 Nokia announced that Navteq would be fully integrated in a new entity called Nokia Location & Commerce.

- In 2012 the Nokia Location & Commerce was renamed HERE.

With the map's quality we have, I had in mind HERE was as small new business.

As a former Garmin GPS user I must say that Navteq maps looked like much more adequate than the HERE maps we have right now and this for the same release date (2012 Q4). Could there be 2 sets of maps ? HERE maps and Navteq / Garmin maps ?

If there's only one set, why are we having 2013 maps in this update as Garmin / Navteq are currently using 2015Q4 maps ? that's many updates between the 2 "current maps". Doing an update with old map set doesn't make sense ...

Can we hope having excellent maps as Garmin is having ... May be ... unless Garmin has some rights in their maps with the original Navteq contract and HERE is just a kind of third party doing packaging for them ...

To me, this just brings more fog ...

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Greetings,

The GPS software providers that license the H.E.R.E. products sometimes develop their own map platform with them. It starts with the basic digital map which is the same as on H.E.R.E.'s website and they do have different maps for other developers to choice from. How many? That is good question.

Garmin maps uses a certain platform from them and then they expanded it from other sources. For example, the Garmin terrain packages on certain PNDs, Kenwood 992 HU and the navi app, have data incorporated from NASA. This not an uncommon practice. Today, Apple basic map data comes from TomTom and they incorporate from other platforms such as openstreetmap.org as well as other sources

It really falls into the hands of the GPS software provider to make good use out of the data based on their goals. This also applies to the specifications given by a client, i.e., FCA.

Best for now.

Eh - the monetary components aren't my real issue. Even if it was $1.50 I'd still want to know if it's actually real and true updates and more importantly, is it going to bomb my Jeep. It's more about the principal.

I agree with the personal assessment aspect - I'll just wait a little while for others to update. I'm done being a Jeep beta tester.

That's very true. You could also buy a modern navigation system with quarterly updates, but it won't come in a Jeep GC

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I believe that HERE has one live NA database along with pending, unverified, changes. When a company, like Chrysler or Garmin, wants an update, a copy of the verified database is created and given to the company.

At that point, the companies, like the two I mentioned, begin testing. Garmin will then issue their updates to numerous GPS models. Jeep tests then approves HERE to release the update and provides HERE with system software and an instruction manual.

I suspect that the big difference is the time it takes these companies to test and accommodate map and POI changes.

It appears to me that Garmin might do this in just a few months. Chrysler may take 1-2 years.

Now, if Harmon Kardon is involved in testing, then it gets messy.

Tom

I guess you answered your own question.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Decided to try and buy this map update once again, since it is available again.

But wait, while on the last page of the checkout I see they are charging me for shipping again, after I had a code for free shipping and it showed free shipping.

So before hitting "place you order" I called them to find out about the shipping. After 15 minutes on hold. I was told that the product is not available now. Even though the website is showing it is and that it is letting me order it.

I was told there were bugs in the initial release on May 26th, so they are fixing them. It should be available early June, but he also stated he does not think it will happen till late June.

I asked why does the website let people place orders for products you are not shipping? He said he does not know why, he only takes orders for the discs.

This is exactly what happened to me when I tried to place my order back before they shut the website ordering down in late May.

He did tell me that people who are placing orders currently are being charged and nothing is shipping as of yet.
So I held off on ordering for now.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

After reading so many of these posts, I noticed many of you have gotten map updates for your 2014 JGC. I have been waiting for over a year to purchase an update for my 2013 JGC, and just keep getting a few more months, a few more months. The latest has been bumped up from March to June 2015 but still its not available. It says you have the most current updates available. I am going to navigation.com and entering the jeep brand. I wonder why the updates for the 13's are not available yet the 14's are. Happy for you guys that are getting your updates, that's great!! Is their another site to go to? OR should I go to the Dealer and check it out there?? Thanks much.

Odd. I put an order in last evening via the website and just received a FedEx tracking code for the shipment a few minutes ago. I paid the shipping. $4 is not worth my time and aggravation.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Website is working for me today showing me the product and asking for to add to cart though I decided not to order just yet.

I really think Here customer support is not kept up to date like they should be.

The way he explained it to me, was they are not shipping.

Maybe you got it before the cut off?

Maybe he has no idea what he is talking about.

But this happened to me late may, then the website started saying coming early June. and now it happened to me again.

THe website says it is available to me as well, but not according to customer service.

I do not want to hit place order, and have the money tied up waiting weeks for the thing to show up.
