Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I just received my Map update for my 2014 GC Summit.

For my Canadian friends it cost me $178.95 US or about $238.60 CDN plus I expext there will be brokerage from FedEx which I expect to be about $10 CDN.

I followed the instruction book exactly and it installed just as advertised.
It took 1 hr and 8 minutes to update.

It must be activated using your email address on a PC and your VIN number before starting. A code is then emailed to you which you use when beginning the install.

I had to leave the engine running the entire time and at around 45 minutes the engine temperature started creeping up as expected. I left the hood for a bit more cooling, not sure it helped.

Dates:
Before I started, my SYSTEM stated map code of: NQNA2012Q4
After the install, it is now NQNA2013Q4;20140625
Presumably that means the maps were generated as of June 25, 2014 with the NA referring to North America.

Diving into the files on the USB, I found they were create on Nov. 20, 2014. There are files for Canada, Mexico, USA and parts of the Caribbean.

That's it.

Cheers

peejym,
I realize it appears odd but my SYSTEM INFO says I am now at:
NQNA2013Q4;20140625

What does the 20140625 portion mean then?
Have you seen an MAP update for a 2014 GC, with a "newer" version?

Cheers

There is no "newer" version, the current map "database" is from Q4 (oct, nov, dec) of 2013, we are in Q4 of 2015 the map database is 2 years old. be glad because prior to the update it was reaching 3 years old now it is only 2.

Not sure how much more information you are looking for. This is how most navigation systems work, the map database will always be behind times, new development (road wise) done after Q4 of 2013 will most likely not show on your navigation system until they have another database update which will be probably happen soon but your navigation system might not see it until 1 to 2 years out.

the date 20140625 is the date the navigation developer started implementing the database from Q42013 but I am not 100% sure, give them a call or go on chat and ask "What is the current map database version on this new release?" answer on my post above from a recent chat with them.

It is to costly for map producers to update road development every month or even every year, I worked for RandMcNally for over 5 years, there is one huge government database we pulled most of the info from then our cartographers made the necessary change if needed.

Enjoy what you currently got and don't' fret over it, peace out, I am out.

That's a waste of money! That's why some owners here just decided to use a portable NAV devices. Those portable GPS/navigation devices get updated pretty frequently. Latest US/Canada map version for Garmin devices is 2016.10. Garmin releases those map updates two or more times a year. What I'm trying to say here is that the map database is available. Why don't they make those map updates available on these built-in nav systems?

JovsDaPogi,
You may very well be right, it is certainly not cheap. But I really do love the "Voice Recognition" feature to find places with my CG's GPS; especially ones on my saved Favourites list. My handhelp Garmin 1370T is terrific but definitely cannot do that.

I think what we need to do is petition FCA as a group to get the upgrade price down and to have them stop gouging everyone through HERE, the supplier. They have a captive market which I hate.
So everyone should complain to their local dealer about this.
Cheers

It's irritating to say the least. I just replaced my wife's 2001 Subaru with a 2014 Mazda CX5 GT with nav. The system is by Tom Tom. Annual updates are $79 and the updates are daily as Tom Tom has a setup where users can notify them of map errors on the fly. I have the 2014 GC system, a Pioneer AVIC8000NEX in my 2013 Mazda MX5 and a stand alone Garmin with lifetime maps. All are up to date on released maps, but the Tom Tom is the only one that has the current speed limits in Ohio (where the GPS and the road signs match) and the traffic advice is current and useful, not to mention that it gives better voice directions than all of the others. So, it can be done and done cheaper.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I have a Grand Cherokee 2015. The maps are 'up to date'... if you consider 2 1/2 years old is up to date.

The Jeep came with HERE maps instead of GARMIN as appears in all the documentation. I am lucky to find an address in the CBD using HERE maps. My portable Garmin stuff is great; I can create PIOs on my computer and upload them very easily... and the maps ARE up to date.

I have been trying to get an answer from Chrysler as to whether the uConnect mapping service can be changed from HERE to GARMIN... it is like pulling teeth.

Does any one know if it can be done?

Cheers

I communicated with JEEP corporate from July 2014 until July 2015. I know that I had the right people involved, but the executive assistant was clueless at times. I will not bore with the blow by blow, but here is some of what I leaned. Keep in mind, I have not talked with them since July.

Chrysler executives are fully aware of the deficiencies in the maps. I think they are trying to see what the tech changes will do, but that delay is unacceptable to most of us.

They have not committed to a "current" update anytime soon.

At one point, the assistant told me he could not understand why I need a new map. I told him that there may not be many new roads being built in Michigan; I assured him that Texas was growing with significant new roads and major highways every year. Just in the last two years there is 30% completion of another loop around the city.

JEEP offered to reimburse me for a portable GPS unit, which I declined. I don't need assistance to purchase a $150 GPS.

I was told about the most recent update 6 weeks before it became available. However, JEEP admitted that it would not offer what I wanted to see. I was told another update is planned for December 2015, but it also will not be as current as I was requesting. I have little faith that this update will happen.

I have not purchased the latest upgrade.

Looking ahead:

With the current JGC model change delayed from 2017 to 2019, perhaps there will be more users to increase the odds that a real update might happen someday.

The recent purchase of HERE by the auto consortium may also help, but their priority may be their own needs, not CFA - Too soon to tell.

As many have said on this forum, the in-dash units will never update as frequently as the portable units. We can live with that, but we don't deserve to be abandoned after spending thousands of dollars for an otherwise very good integrated in-dash system.

while i believe (off the top of my head) the JGC is the best selling FCA vehicle in the US, keep in mind that pretty much every redesigned FCA vehicle seems to have the 8.4 uconnect, so the platform is bigger than JGC's alone.

As an example- i think the first estimate of the recalled systems due to hacking was somethign like 1.4 million and i seems to recall there might have been a second smaller recall. So could be a couple million total vehicles with the 8.4 uconnect system.

No idea what the split is of 8.4an (and 8.4a with nav) vs 8.4 without nav would be.
