Greetings,

A little late with this but:

Since the wonderful introduction of Apple MAPS using TomTom back in 2012 as the primary database before any other overlays, they have been updating continuously. In fact, my offline navi app, Sygic that uses TomTom maps updates every 3-5 months.

Best for now.

Greetings,

Intersting point of view.

I have not been following the thread for sometime now, but seams that the commentary has not changed, including the heated debates. Whether FCA is reading this or not, the bottom line is, the Uconnect division is heading into the ice age. This what happens when you fall asleep at the wheel.

Reality has hit the competition and they have responded in the last year or so. If they do not go for either CarPlay or Android Auto, their proprietary systems are making it easier for updates in both the navigation area and the music streaming area. Some even have provisions for the smartphone to be used as the update medium. Even Ford is finding ways to update the existing customer base without having to buy whole new vehicle. They realize we are not in a disposable economy any longer. I have no knowledge on the 2016 Uconnect models or any forthcoming models. I guess it is still status quo for FCA. Locked in unless you get one of the lockpick devices for now.

It seams now that every week or every other week, another manufacture releases updates which new model(s) will be equipment with CarPlay or Android Auto.

Since I have had my JGC back in Feb of 2011, the only item that was a let down so far has been the Uconnect and sound system. I knew it back than before I purchased it.

Best for now.

Sprint 3G is EVDO and it's way slower than AT&T 3G which is WCDMA/HSPA.

So does this mean you'll be buying a new jeep in the near future?

not really- apple and android phones updated themselves over 3g for years before there was 4g. Plenty of those were gigabyte updates. At least in the case of verizon they worked it out with google to send updates to those android phones in the middle of the night. There's no reason at all that sprint/FCA/Here couldn't work out a plan to send incremental updates in the middle of the night. Send a few hundred MB's a night for a week. done.

it's been years but i think my 2g Palm Treo's also downloaded their updates OTA, not sure if those were gigabytes or just megabytes.

and still android updates that were GB's large downloaded regularly over sprint and verizon EVDO.....

in fact, i'd venture to say that based on their coverage that there are till plenty of sprint customers not in major population centers that only get 3G and still those people update their android and apple phones all the time.

bottom line is - what does it matter, how many nights it takes when they only send it once a year? They could take a week and send it once a quarter. So why is it a reason they couldn't send updates?

incremental updates might just take minutes or couple hours.

Hmmm... Maybe, think about it. With the Jeep Grand Cherokee price range, can you find a off-road vehicle as capable as the Grand Cherokee yet has the tow capacity? and with a Diesel engine? Maybe the 4Runner minus the towing capability, the upcoming Land Rover Discovery? But it will be over $60,000. Other than that I will be looking at Trucks, which I think it has less storage space and a less comfort ride and back seat. I just don't get it why Ford and Chervolet is selling those truck based SUV they sold to the rest of the world. The Ford Everest ( Ford Ranger based) and the Chervolet Colorado 7 (Chervolet Colorado based) are one of the best choice.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

These vehicles have a wifi device or they wouldn't be able to allow you to use your vehicle as a hotspot. Why not just allow owners to connect their vehicle to their homes Wifi and download the update straight to the vehicle without having to waste 3G bandwidth. It would be fast and cheap as it would be using the owners home wifi which I assume 90+% of the the people out there have home wifi.
