Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Let me get this straight ... so currently in my MY2014 it seems like I have Q2 2012 maps. The upgrade ($150) will take me to Q2 2013 (or is it Q4) which is still almost 3 years old right now.

I would love to upgrade but I'm guessing my sanity to upgrade something which is vintage already. Sounds insane to me...

Reading above threads we don't even know if they are planning to release another update soon. It would suck big time to spend 150 on this for something dated and on top of that they would release a new update 2 or 3 months from now.

Yup that's pretty much correct! I purchased the outdated update a while back only because it was newer then what I had. I did read somewhere that the 2018 models will come with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. Once that happens IMO that will be the end of any future map updates. I'm hoping that our Unconnect system can somehow be adopted to the newer system.

What is amazing too is the convoluted process to get the so called updated old maps installed.

I moved on to Waze.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Between:

1) Old Maps for too much money compared to new maps for free I get elsewhere
2) The Buy-in price for the unit in the first place
3) The lack of features compared to other GPS options

I'm definitely wishing that I didn't bother upgrading to the nav system. I really feel like I got taken on it.

On my next vehicle, I likely won't bother with it unless the offering is really, really awesome and blows away what my phone or standalones offer.

The UConnect/Navi system overall feels like some 1950's movie vision of the future compared to how technology really ended up. Now I feel like I'm stuck with some massive mainframe full of tubes and a bunch of spinning tape reels.

Even the backup camera is out of date.

It's sad because so much of the mechanical stuff is great on the vehicle. The tranny still has a little room to become smoother (in particular the 1-2, 2-1 shifts), but everything else is great. It's the tech that fails pretty hard on the vehicle. It's like Jeep is still in the Beta stage of this stuff.

That's about correct. Last year they released the 2015 maps(2013Q4) in mid May 2015 which was the first update for the GC 8.4 uconnect. Not to say they are going to stick to the same schedule but I don't think id buy the old 2015 map when with it now being a year from its release unless you were greatly in need of it. Not saying the 2016 will be out in mid may 2016 but hopefully not too long after that but who knows. HERE customer service was fairly worthless when many of us were calling them last year concerning the release of the 2015 map but a call or email to them may not hurt just to see what their current line is. Hopefully since they finally got the first release out maybe we will see some consistency with releases but again who knows.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

It doesn't help they were looking to be sold, either. That kills any development in any company since cost cutting measures automatically go into place and all prjects pretty much grind to a halt to show as good a balance sheet as possible. The same thing happened when Dish tried to buy DirecTV - all the HD expansion halted until the sale fell through and they could move on again.

So, I would agree that buying the current upgrade is iffy at this point since there's always the possibility of another upgrade sometime this year. If one comes out, I'll consider buying it since that will likely at least contain mid to late 2015 maps, which will be slightly ahead of where my Jeep should have been when I bought it in the first place.

Then I'll wait until the maps reflect a completed I-81/86 interchange in the Binghamton, NY area and a completed I-84 lane expansion areas between Southington and Danbury, CT before I buy again. Then I won't bother with anything else since I'll likely have moved on to another vehicle by the time they rebuild I-84 through Hartford.

If it's the next couple of months, it will probably be Q2 2015. If it's a summer or early fall release, it might be as new as Q3 2015, but I doubt we'll get anything newer than that for anything released before September - assuming there is a release at all by then.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

So in current 2016 MY are the maps also outdated as they use the same nav and uconnect system or do they somehow package that seperatly and keep up to date for current models?

I can only speak from my own experience.

My maps on my 2015 were roughly a year old. The last update put the maps just about where they should have been when I bought it.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Greetings,

The HERE map database updates (remember this is an off-line mapping) across the board from dedicated built-in systems such as in the JGC to smartphone apps are general slow to update. As a result, the informational data is always not current. The initial build data will show an old year with some updates with a closer date stamp. This is why their is a large discrepancy between dates with the new MY16 and recent MY15. This is the way HERE (formally Navtag) has operated over the years.

On the other hand for those who had off-line map databases from different manufactures other than FCA, that used the TomTom data, you get updates that are more current and frequent to the present time. This also includes both off line and on line services.

Both HERE and TomTom provide the market share of off-line map databases and their first priorities are to their dedicated systems such as the portable GPS market and more importantly the smartphone apps. In order to get the most reliable updated data map, at least in the USA, is the on-line services of either Google or Apple Maps.

The only way I see that we have a better update solution and have advocated in the past, is a portal system that the updates can be generated off our personal computers, work computers or even a dealer portal update system.. In this day and era, for the corporate thinking, in particular HERE, they would rather not be bother with the current update procedures. It is a waste of money for them.

The bottom line regarding updates for the JGC on when to update and purchase them, you have to make up your own mind when to pull the plug. If you have a smartphone, use it as either your primary or secondary GPS system if you are looking for better map reliability. Routing of the destination is a complete separate issue.

Best for now.

So I gave HERE a call today and they said it could/ should be out any time between now and November. Lol.
