Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

If this goes anything like the May '15 update, we'll be seeing it next spring. HERE teases worse than a high school girl in a bikini.

There definitely needs to be a solution to mirror a phone app, or load a route from a thumb drive. Until then we're stuck with a one-eyed seeing dog nav system.

Actually, it's more like 1870.

I'm pretty sure there's a guy drawing the maps with a quill pen. Anything outside of the Continental US simply says "here be dragons..."

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Ahh...Fall... what a wonderful time to vent ...

Not holding out much hope either.

My conversation with HERE last year in November:

Quote:
I got an "Map Update available" for my 2014 RAM 1500 Truck. Uconnect maps have issues. I have contacted Chrysler and they blame you guys. Here is an example:

My 19 mile, 30 minute drive to work gets assessed as nearly an hour. I can literally watch the time of arrival count down and get closer and closer to the correct value. My Nuvi never had problems like this thing.

The route from my office to my mother's house was off by nearly an hour. I figured that one out for the most part. Part of the drive was on a road the NAV did not know the speed limit. I set the cruise as 60 mph, and watched it change the arrive time by 2 minutes every time a minute elapsed. Looks like an unknown speed for a road is estimated at 30MPH.

Another example: The NAV indicates 5 minutes to go with greater than 7 miles driving 55 MPH. Also, 7 miles was to the turn, not to the destination. I have a picture I can send. Very frustrated with the NAV.

Obviously, part of the problem is a road with unknown speeds. Paying $150 for a map update that may or may not fix the problem is too much of a gamble. Is there any way to know if SR3 in FL is fully marked with a speed limit for its entire length? Per the vehicle, Maps are CMCVP4NA;NQNA2012Q4;20130328. Thanks,Doug
After internally bouncing around a bit inside of HERE, their response was:

Quote:
Hello Douglas,

Thank you for inquiring about HERE Maps. Unfortunately, we do not have the capability to look up specific coverage information for your navigation system. Please check with your authorized dealer for further assistance. We apologize for the inconvenience.

If you need additional assistance, please send us your feedback by replying to this email.

Kind regards,

HERE Customer Service
P.O. Box 1588
Orem, UT 84059

I am frustrated enough that a will probably roll the dice and gamble, Spend the $150 (+shipping as LONGJOHNS points out) and expect nothing...

Glad you guys are here though... There is comfort in shared pain.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I like how they say "Please check with your authorized dealer for further assistance."

They are also completely clueless when it comes to the maps and map upgrades. Sounds like no one knows what anyone else is doing...

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Speaking of shared pain, when I did the May '15 update, it was pretty straight forward as long as I had the latest uconnect update on my unit. I've read here that folks updating later radios had to jump through hoops with entering codes, etc., before the map update would take. Anyone have any feedback on that? (I remember someone mentioning going online for an activation code that had to be entered, or some such thing.)

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

The map update process for the uconnect system is a major reason I want my next vehicle to support droid auto and apple car play. Older maps, high cost and 30-45 minutes to update and that's if everything goes well.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Android Auto or Carplay for sure on my next vehicle. I actually do like the Uconnect NAV system, besides it being out of date!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

I ordered the '15 map update earlier this week. When I got it, I didn't pay attention to the part #. When I went to update my '14 WK2 it showed '12 maps currently installed and the update was '13 maps. I updated anyway last night.

I called HERE today and they said they were going to refund me for the maps because the '17 update was coming out the end of October and I should just get that instead of getting them to send me the '15 update.

Wow! That's moving the release date up two months from when I called them in the middle of September.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Map Update

Save your money and don't buy any map updates, and never buy another factory installed GPS system from FCA. I just finished reaming out a FCA rep at a dealership trying to promote their products and trying to build better customer relations. I told them, as I purchased a new Jeep, that the one I just bought has no GPS in it and the reason why, and the only reason was, crap maps and poor updates to the crap maps. I asked him to take that back to someone that would listen. The whole map update process is an absolute rip off and the product is old and outdated before you even drive off the lot. There is no reason for that other than we just keep taking it. So sad it has come to that.
He said it was out of their control....I quickly reminded him that FCA and a few other manufactures are actually all co-owners of HERE, so yes you can do something about it.

I continue to be amazed that the Mazda CX5 GT that my wife drives and which cost about half of what the Grand Cherokee does has a Tom-Tom system (not a brand I would normally choose), but it's maps are kept current weekly on a 1 year $79 subscription and the maps get you to where you want to go accurately.

But the one that really gets me is the Pioneer AVIC8000-NEX that I installed in my Miata. It uses HERE maps which cost $129 per year, can be downloaded over the net, and which seem to be newer than whatever latest release for the Jeep is. Again, these are periodically upgraded.

I suspect that Pioneer wrote the software to buy and download the maps and updates as it is given away free on its website. FCA needs to do something similar. Whether it will or not is another question.

I will be contacting HERE again on Monday as the replacement radio Jeep put in my GC died last weekend and I am now on the fourth radio (three in the last month since the first replacement they sent didn't work at all. I want to see if HERE will again authorize me to install the updates I bought last year like it did on the first working (temporarily) radio.
