2014 Map Update - "PND Did Not Update" Error

First...What a PITA!!

I have a 2012 Jeep GC Ltd...

Have the RHB/430N radio with the latest Uconnect software (per Uconnect online and the dealership), but map data is original from 2012. So, ordered a map update DVD from Navigation.com and got it last week.

Got through the activation process and loaded the unlock code. Followed instructions exactly and received error "PND Did Not Update".

Tried multiple times, same issue.

Searched JG and found a few threads which somehow morphed into much more than just updating the maps (i.e. Uconnect Software hacks, etc.)...

I checked Nav DVD on my computer and I see files and folders. So disk seems to be ok...

Called Garmin Tech Support. Tech said to try "sleep procedure" - All lights off, Stop Engine, Open and Close Driver Door, Wait no less than 5 min, restart engine, retry update maps...

Did not work and tried 3X. Same error.

Called Garmin Tech back and they said that maybe I need a new DVD, however they said that if it loaded in a computer DVD drive, it should be ok. They have no idea why there is an issue. The Tech even mentioned I may need a new Nav head unit! WTF?!?

Called HERE fulfillment center to inquire about a replacement disk and they told me there were no more 2014 disks left. I would have to wait until March 2015 to get a replacement.

So, do you guys have any suggestions?? I am at my wits end with this stupid thing. I have NEVER ever had an issue updating any maps on any of my vehicles (Dodge, Jeep, Toyota, & Ford)..

Can I image the DVD to a USB Stick and try that way (in case of the Nav DVD unit being faulty)?

Is this something I need to bring to the stealership?

I appreciate all suggestions!

Re: 2014 Map Update - "PND Did Not Update" Error

Under the maps section, press the info button and see what your maps say?
If you bought the disc, it should say something like OEM 2014 ....
If you are running software version 50.xx.x, then you cannot update. You have to be running 33.xx.x or 43.xx.x to update maps.

I believe PND did not update has to do with the Garmin files on the radio itself, and not the maps.

Check the software version, and map version and post the info.

I am running 2014.40 currently on a 2011 430N RHB

Hi - Thanks for the reply!

- The new DVD is "Navigation Map Update - City Navigator North America 2014 * RHB/RB5/RB6" part number *U3942-0070-308/010-11954-01 It is from Navigation.com and made by Garmin.

- Current 430N map is "OEM City Navigator North America + Mexico NT 2012"

- Application Software Version is 50.00.07

- GPS Software version is 2.90

I spoke with Uconnect again today. They think the radio needs to be re-flashed again with the latest software by the dealer to make things load properly. I did explain that there are some folks who have downgraded their software (to v43 or v33) in order to install this update. They has not heard about that (surprise), but felt pretty confident that they could get it sorted out. I have an appointment with the dealer to take care of this, plus the two recalls (visor light wiring and brake booster). Hopefully, they are not going to tell me I need a new head unit. I'll be pissed.

I also received an update from Uconnect that they are working on updating the software to work properly with Apple's latest iOS release 8.1.2. Apparently, Apple changed their BT communication parameters and it is causing all kinds of issues with pairing, and voice dialing from the phone book (my issue).

What a PITA!

Re: 2014 Map Update - "PND Did Not Update" Error

You can't update from software version 50.xx.x.
You have to burn the 33.xx.x software to a disc as well as
another disc for 50.xx.x.
After the downgrade to 33, update the maps, then upgrade to 50.

Re: 2014 Map Update - "PND Did Not Update" Error

Ok...Quick update..

I had previously called Uconnect customer care and they finally got back to me. After much back and forth, they decided to hand me off to my own Chrysler Case Manager (CCM) to see if we could get this taken care of at the dealer. I was thinking, "great, I can have the two recalls done at the same time, and be done with this".. right.

Dealer took care of the recalls, but had no luck with either my 2014 NAV update disc, or theirs. They told me they have no clue what's going on... The Asst. Service manager even tells me "that I don't need a disc to update the maps. It is all done by "satellite"". WTF is he talking about? Not my 2012 JGC that's for sure. This kind of misinformation is one of the main reasons why I hate dealerships.

Back to my CCM...and she is telling me that she was told that the reason why I am getting the "PND Did Not Update" error is because my system is already up to date! After I politely balked at her solution, and proving that my maps data is still 2012, she then proceeds to inquire again about all of the software versions (uconnect, maps, etc.) I have installed in the car. I again, gave it all to her...

So now, they are pondering what could be the problem. I just asked her is there ANYONE who has tried to update a 430N 2012 Maps version with the 2014 Maps version...while on the latest version of the Uconnect software (v50.00..)?

Still waiting for an answer.

I'll check in with any updates. I don't want to roll back the Uconnect software just yet until I have exhausted this avenue with the CCM.

Re: 2014 Map Update - "PND Did Not Update" Error

Pretty scary that they don't know what their software is not capable of doing. No wonder why there hasn't been an update to 50.xx.x. They don't know there is a problem with it.

Re: 2014 Map Update - "PND Did Not Update" Error

Nubby105,

How did this process of downgrading and upgrading come about? Did someone else have this issue with the 430N? I am curious as to how this solution came about.

Thanks,

-Larry

Re: 2014 Map Update - "PND Did Not Update" Error

The maps are out there on the Internet. I have upgraded 2012 2013 and now 2014.40 maps.
There are many sites that have the info on them. I learned about the down grade issues on a wrangler forum as well as on here. The downgrade takes 15min to do. The map update takes about an hour or so then 15min to upgrade again.

Re: 2014 Map Update - "PND Did Not Update" Error

Success!! After going back and forth with my friendly CCM, and no solution in sight, I decided to embark on the process described.

So, here is what I did:

1. Obtain disk images of Uconnect version 33.01.33 AND version 50.00.07 software.

2. Using a computer, burn each image to a separate DVD-R disc. Label each disc.

3. Get into car, start car and press the "Load" button on the 430N.

4. Insert version 33 disc. Follow all command prompts to install version 33. The process will take 15 minutes or so. The screen will go blank for a few minutes during the process...let it run.

5. Upon completion, eject disk via the "load" button. Check functions. If all good, proceed to next step. Screen will look different due to older software.

6. Load the 2014 NAV update via the "Load" button. Follow all screen prompts. Do not turn ign off. The process will take about 2 hours - unattended.

7. Upon completion, verify maps have been updated via Maps>Info>Map Version. Should say 2014. If so, eject disc via "Load" button.

8. Via "load" button, insert version 50 disc, and follow all commands. The process will take another 15 minutes. Be sure to update ALL modules (I think there are 3). The screen will go blank and nothing will appear to be working...but it is. Be patient!

9. See step #5

10. Verify operation and that Uconnect software is at V 50.00.07. Process Complete.

So, it worked. No bricked radio or other issue. Clearly there is a software issue with the latest Uconnect version 50.00.07 AND the 2014 NAV update disc. The reason why Chrysler has not likely heard about it is that *most* customers who have purchased/installed the 2014 NAV update, likely have NOT had their 430N radio updated with the Uconnect software BEFORE the 2014 NAV update, as it was not a recall or customer action. However, there is a TSB (08-061-13) which I knew about and asked the dealer to install when I had it in for service early last year.

So, all is good. Thank you for your help. I really appreciate your support.

Now if the folks at Uconnect will just fix the issue with the iOS 8.1.2 and my handsfree ops, I would be completely satisfied. I have been assured that they are close to resolving it.

Yes...So did I. However, I did share my success (and the process) with my CCM . Hopefully, they will do something to fix this issue in the future.

I am not holding my breath!

Thanks!
