Question 2014 Overland Audio Upgrade.

Hey all, I have 2014 Overland with the Alpine system in it. I want to replace ALL the speakers with better ones. I have chosen to use these:

This is all Rockford Fosgate stuff unless otherwise advised.
P1694 4-Way 6X9 for the front doors.
P1675 3-Way 6.75 for the rear doors.
2 Sets of P132's for the center dash and rear D-pillars.
P1TS 1in tweeters for the door pillars.

The only thing I'm not sure of is the depth size I can use for the 8' sub. Also, has anyone changed out the standard 2.5in D-pillar speakers with anything else? I'm also wondering if I should change anything related to the amp. I have no idea on what to do with regards to cleaning up the signal. The system as it is puts out way to much mid's and has almost no high's (Probably due to the too few tweeters in the system).

Greetings,

First of all, welcome.

You are dealing with a OEM 7.1 surround sound system that composes of component speakers and full range drivers on active (electronic) crossovers. In fact, the layout is correct for the design and you really do not need additional tweeters. The problem is from the specifications that Chrysler has given Alpine to work with.

The RF p1694 & P1675 are going to be the wrong speakers for the OEM amp to handle. You really need high efficiency speakers if going to retain the factory amp. The key is to look at the sensitivity rating for 90db or greater. Component sets with out using included passive crossover for the front and full range drivers for the rest. If you carefully search the forum, you find a lot of upgrades similar to your plans with excellent results.

For the subwoofer, you depth no greater that 5 inches. Many have tried to improve the OEM sub and some results. While other found it was better to change it out altogether.

To clean up the signal you will entering a whole new ballgame. This will require you to get aftermarket equipment. Now, you have to ask your self do want a surround sound system or go the traditional front/rear/sub route. Their will be costs in either approach, but the costs depends on the level your want to take your sound. too.

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Overland Audio Upgrade.

The P1694's have a rating of 91dB while the P1675's have a rating of 88dB. The P132's have a rating of 85dB. I know Polk has a 92(?)dB 3.5 in speaker but I don't like mixing brands as each can have different characteristics.

I'm not looking to go high-end. I just want better sound.

Re: 2014 Overland Audio Upgrade.

Greetings,

Why would you put a 4 way speaker in place of the 6x9 when the OEM electronic crossover would not give you the proper signal response? Then you have the problem of powering 4 drivers into each channel.

A number of other members here have used this Focal component speaker for the fronts with out the included passive crossover with excellent results:

Focal Integration ISS 690 6" x 9" component speaker system at Crutchfield.com

Hi end speakers is when my the top of line from Focal, Rainbow, HAT, Morel Hifi and etc... Then you are spending over $500.00 per driver. Some of Rainbow speakers for over $6,500.00 comes in nice stained wood box.

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Overland Audio Upgrade.

If I went for the Focal ISS 690 for the front door and pillar, could I use an ISC 165 for the back doors? Are blocking the highs from that location?

Re: 2014 Overland Audio Upgrade.

Greetings,

The ISC 165 will work on the back door. The high's will make it out.

Latter down the down road, if you want more power, you can always add a 6 channel amp. Many here have done it. They put the speakers in first and a couple of months latter they add the amp.

Best for now.

Re: 2014 Overland Audio Upgrade.

Since Focal does not make a 3.5in speaker, what could be used to replace the center channel speaker while best maintaining the tibre. Also, what about the D-Pillar speakers? I could put 3.5's in there also to match the front center.

Greetings,

Yes, you can put in 3.5 in the D Pillar and that is what I have in mine.

Since you indicated that you want to keep this upgrade to a minimum, the key to the center channel for you is the type of music you listen to you. You are correct that the tibre is important especially for maintaining the front left/center/right channels. IMHO, because of the how the factory DSP setting is setup, it not going to matter that much.

The reason I mentioned Focal to you was, the RF speakers you selected had the metal based tweeter in them. Also Focal's 6x9 has a better mid bass response. Here in the forum, their is big debate between 6x9 and 6.5 speakers. If you what to use a 6.5, then you have greater choices down the road if you want to upgrade your system. Many here also have gone with the Polk's 6.5 component sets and they use the 3.5 as the center. For Polk's tweeter, they use a soft dome type of material to give a more natural sound as oppose to the metal tinny sound. I am sure somebody here has a single laying around to sell.

The option which I suggest to those who to upgrade on a budget and what better sound, you can try looking at Parts Express: the #1 source for audio, video & speaker building components or Madisound, Global Distributor of Audiophile Speaker Drivers and Loudspeaker Parts Since 1972 for sets and drivers. They go from cheap to really expensive. The sales people are fabulous and can help you in your choices.

Best for now.

Did you order the SRT kickers from the dealer? Replaced all of the Overland?

Re: 2014 Overland Audio Upgrade.

I took my 14 Overland by a high end car audio sound shop the other day.

The first recommendation I was given was to get an environmental package installed and not to replace the stock speakers & amp. Essentially reinforcing the doors with sound deadening fabrication from the inside of the outer skin, inner door and finally the inside of the door panels setting the foundation for other upgrades down the road.
