Thumbs up Re: 2014 overland stereo yuck

I have to agree with you there. On the equaliser on the demo car I cranked the treble all the way up and brought the mids to about halfway up and then mess with the bass until it sounded somewhat decent in order to get away from having to crank the volume so high. I also turned off the surround sound which seemed to clean it up a bit.

If you do a internet search, you'll get some good convincing info on why you should only replace the 6x9's with component 6.5's with a good solid adapter (metal or mdf, not plastic) and why you'll never see an audiophile installation use non-circle drivers (ie. 6x9's).

Regarding the Center speaker replacement, there is a thread here with guys that have replaced it with a Polk 3.5 with great result and an extra speaker for sale as they are using only one out of the pair.

Let us know what arrangement you went with and your experience and any advice.

Re: 2014 overland stereo yuck

I have the 2014 JGC Overland with Harmon Audio system and it is BY FAR the BEST system I have ever had in ANY car. I have had Lexus, Infiniti, Honda, Toyota, Mercedes.....this thing THUMPS (No need for a Bazooka tube that I put in my 2013 Overland)...and the highs are crisp and clean. Turn SURROUND ON....and my bass is at +4 my mid -2 my highs +6.

SIMPLY THE BEST sounding audio I have ever heard in a factory radio of ANY vehicle.

Maybe you got a "bad batch"?

Haze

*edit I mainly play 320kbps mp3s from SD Card and USB. Sirius does sound "weak"....I don't listen to terrestrial radio EVER....the BT streaming of Pandora is AWESOME and the AUX works great too. Just sayin'

Re: 2014 overland stereo yuck

one thing I'd like to see in my 2014 Overland's system is a subwoofer level control. It is way out of balance. Other than that it sounds a lot better out-of-the box than the two new Lexus systems I recently experienced.

One solution is to listen to SXM, where the sound quality is so lousy the rest of the system barely matters (that said, I have been channel-surfing Sirius since the beginning in my '99 D ... broadcast radio is such a wasteland ...)

I'll eventually be changing the speakers, but probably not for a couple years. Need to spread these kinds of things out so that I keep loving the vehicle (Hey, it worked with my '07, which I still love..)

Am I an audio geek? well, I need to get the Scott 222C biased up, off the bench and back into the living room.. those damned Russian 7189(A) replacements

You sound like my mom......
Alpine is the people who design this stereo system. I think.

Re: 2014 overland stereo yuck

I think all this stuff comes from Harman, but that's just a guess. They are huge in the automotive telematics world, to the point of having bought QNX to have their own OS to do all this stuff.

There are lots of brand names that get thrown around, but these days those turn out to just be symlinks back to a very few companies.

Interesting that when ol' Sidney started this all, the sound might not have been the primary goal Thoughts on Sidney Harman - Audiophile Review

Not on the 2014...it's Harmon Kardon. My 2013 was Alpine and I only needed to add a 10" powered Bazooka tube.

Speakers will run off of the stock amp. It will be a big improvement if you are looking for something simple. They aren't going to rip like they would off of a new amp, but they will more than suffice. I put components in my front doors and pilars, and i'm going to do the rears this weekend.

The difference is really noticeable when I fade from front to rear. In the front, it sounds like music should.. In the rear where the stock speakers are, well lets just say it motivates me to tear them out. The sub can stay if you don't need alot of bass. Its not super clear clean bass, but its good enough. Everything else must go.

I have the EXACT system as you (if you have the 8.4AN) and I TOTALLY DISAGREE with EVERYTHING you said. This system ROCKS and NOT muddy or crappy. I mainly use 320kbps MP3's....and the 20 or so folks that have ridden with me have agreed that the system is AMAZING. I don't understand why your's isn't so great. I don't doubt you...but the system in MY 2014 JGC Overland sounds AWESOME.

I read somewhere the 2014 has two choices the harman radios that the srt has and the alpine that we have in the overland.
But maybe i am wrong.

The HK 825 watt system is standard on the Summit and optional on the SRT. I also noticed quite an improvement in this system over the Alpine 506 watt system that my 2012 Overland came standard with.

There's a weakness in the system where you darn near have to turn it up to level 26-28 in order for any of the highs or mids to kick in..there's plenty of bass. You can't talk in the car with other people like that.

Re: 2014 overland stereo yuck

This may or may not be obvious to everyone but I just discovered it after having my GC for 2 months. If your playing MP3s either via USB cable or streaming via bluetooth the phone/Ipod's EQ is still enabled and does it's thing before the signal ever makes it to the head unit. I had always thought the stereo on the GC was a little bass heavy, and over the weekend I was reviewing settings on my phone and I happened to check and noticed I had set it to to Bass Boost to compensate for the ear buds ages ago. I reset the EQ to Off on the phone and the change propagated through to the stereo on the GC. I'm not sure if this behavior is the same on an Android or Microsoft devices but it might be worth a peek to ensure your at least starting with a flat signal.
