I've got a mixture of .mp3 and .m4a and I haven't noticed any problems. I'm using a 32GB class 10 card. I still haven't had much luck getting the voice recognition to work with song titles but it does work well with artists. You can say "play artist xxxx" and it will start playing the first song by that artist. Then you can push the tracks button to get a list of all the tracks by that artist.

Re: 2014 sd card capacity?

So will this play m4a files or not? I know that you can transfer them but will unit see them?

When you press shuffle ,will all the songs on the sd card be shuffled or only the ones in a particular folder?

It plays m4a format just fine. The shuffle feature has me a little confused. I haven't fully tested it yet but it seems like it shuffles through all folders and not just the one you previously selected. Also it should be noted that shuffle is always off by default. So any change you make (changing sources, folders, or restarting the car) requires you to select shuffle again after the first song starts playing.

Re: 2014 sd card capacity?

I ordered the CD option on my 2014 Overland and didn't realize that it is located in the center console under the armrest. It takes up almost all the room in there. Dealer is ordering the replacement module so I can remove the CD player and have my center console space back

Re: 2014 sd card capacity?

My first post ever on this forum, so go easy....

I have a 2014 GC with the 8.4AN unit. I have been experimenting with the SD card since day 1. I love the SD card concept, though there are some problems with its current implementation. I'll list some of my thoughts.

1. Speed of the card. I have used both the Class 10 and older cards. The only difference is the speed at which your data gets loaded on the computer side. I see no difference in the speed at which the vehicle loads the music or changes files, etc.
2. Capacity. I currently have my entire music collection (75GB) as MP3 format. I have used small cards, 1GB up to 32GB with no difficulty. As one might expect, it takes longer for the vehicle system to load larger cards with more files. There is a pretty lengthy delay from insertion of the 16GB card into the system before everything is loaded and working correctly. I haven't timed it, but I'd say it can be somewhere between 30 to 60 seconds for a full, 16GB card. That's for the initial insertion. It's faster after that if you leave the SD card inserted. I am currently using a 16GB, Class 10 card for "Playlists" and it has about 2000 songs on it, ripped at various kbs, but mostly 192 or 320.
3. Folders. One bug I have found up front is that shuffle mode does not work within user defined folders. Most people drag folders of music onto the card from their itunes library or elsewhere. If you select "browse", then "folder" and select a folder, the songs will play in order, but if you then select "shuffle", you see the song count revert to the number on the entire SD card and it will shuffle the contents of the entire card. This is a bug, because you can complete much more complex searches than just "folder" and then shuffle works within the resulting set of music.
4. Playlists. I am a Mac user, and I use iTunes for my music. Since Shuffle mode will not work properly within a folder, I have found a way to export an iTunes playlist file, with music, onto the SD card. There is a script available at dougscripts.com that will export the playlist file, and all songs, to the SD card. The playlist file is a .M3U file, and it basically contains pointers that reference the file location of each song on the playlist. The script changes the references as necessary to reflect the new location of each song on the SD card. It works great. For example, I have a "Rock" playlist with about 450 songs on my SD card. Exporting that to the SD card (16GB, Class 10 card) took 3 or 4 minutes, which is not bad. Once you get a playlist properly set up and loaded onto the SD card, you can then select the playlist and either play it in the order you specified in iTunes, or you can select "shuffle" mode and it will play randomly and stay within the playlist.
5. Artwork. This one is tricky. I found out only through trial and error that artwork must be less than 1000x1000 pixels in order to show up. Most artwork furnished via iTunes is 600x600, which is fine, but it is not necessarily "embedded" in the MP3 file, so you have to use another script to ensure the artwork is actually embedded in the files, or else the art won't show. Dougscripts also has an iTunes script for this purpose. [I am not "doug". I downloaded a few of his scripts and made a donation for his efforts, because they work great and solved my precise problem]. Artwork at or above 300x300 looks fine on the screen; below that looks like SD TV.
6. TAG Info. Having the display show artwork and TAG information revealed to me just how undisciplined I had been in keeping my music collection cleaned up. I made it a hobby and it took me several evenings to clean up my entire, 10,000 song collection, so that it is now complete, without duplicates, with correct TAGs and artwork. There are several programs available to assist you in this process, and some are much better than others. Clearly, the more accurate your TAG information is, the better your tunes look on the display.

One other thought....I initially had a 16GB card, and I was having all kinds of problems with the unit locking up in the middle of a song, or the song count changing on the screen every time I started the vehicle. Turns out, I had a corrupt SD card. First time ever. Tried erasing/reformatting, but with no success. Swapped out the card for a new one and no more issues at all. I could read the card and load the card on my computer with no issue at all, but once inserted into the vehicle, it just didn't quite work right. If you are experiencing this type of problem, try erasing/reformatting and reloading the card first, but you may have a bad card. Same potential with a flash drive. I had never had a bad SD card before ever, so this caught me quite by surprise.

I hope this is helpful in some small way. I can get more specific about any of these items here if desired, such as the software I used to help with TAGs and/or artwork. But, I will say that I find the SD card a great addition. You can load a boatload of music, entire collections for many people, and have it at your fingertips in the car w/o having to take up all the capacity on the mobile phone.

Good luck and I'd love to hear any feedback from others that are conducting similar experiments.

Bass, I stated that same thing when I was bringing my Jeep home from the dealership. I got 3 songs in and it locked up. I reformatted the card a few times and then It started to work fine.

I found the same thing when trying to shuffle within a genre. I thought it was working originally, but not since I had all the warnings go off. Maybe it was never working and I was just paying attention to other things in my new Jeep.

There seems to be alot of issues with the sd cards being used,is anyone using the USB drives?? I'm sure you can get a nice sized one, load all your songs and be free of these issues that everyone is having. These sd or camera cards could be having issues due to the music and not the picture formats. I will be definately getting a slim USB drive of anywhere above 32gb,nice and small so it doesn't stick out too much and I'll be loading up my songs on it,I just wanna hear the music so if the album art doesnt show up no biggy.
