What is it harming? If you turn it down, the radio is effectively off.
It is imbedded in the nav/climate system and doesn't have a separate switch or power, so it wouldn't draw any less power if it were "off"

No less than Arthur Clarke himself claimed repeatedly that this was a humorous coincidence, but merely a coincidence. Not a lot of his fans believed him.

Maybe they should remake this with the plotline more along the lines of the original short story "The Monolith" the movie idea came from. Pick up the story line when the aliens arrive to see who took a nuke to their artifact on the moon.

Yes I have the DVD and owned the SVHS too.
No, that would be unfair to HAL.

Push the center of the volume knob. The knob with pic of a speaker with a slash through it. AKA mute.

Re: 2014 Turn off the Radio

Slightly off topic, but a 2013 Ram 1500 4x4 I rented this past week (GC in the shop) would unmute the stereo when you turned off the key. Drove me nuts! There is probably a software update to fix that in the Ram.

Yes, believe it or not, the RAM actually had more issues as that radio was out first.
