2014 USB Powered CD Player Compatibility

Are the USB powered CD players that are readily available for notebook computers compatible with the Model RA4 - Uconnect™ 8.4AN?

Seeking an alternative to the Optional Remote CD player (in center console) for occasional use.

Re: 2014 USB Powered CD Player Compatibility

A portable CD player would work with an auxillary cord using the Aux port in the console below the climate controls. Maybe it even would fit in there. Wouldn't be able to control it through the radio that way though.

Re: 2014 USB Powered CD Player Compatibility

Although I wasn't thrilled about it, I took the time to rip most of my CDs to an SD card. I hope it will allow the various choice of playback as my current hdd, by artist, album, genre, etc. And, having the ability to play random selections within the group.

I hate being dragged into the 21st century, and I only go kicking and screaming.

Thank you for your response.

Is there a fundamental difference between playing music from an SD card and playing music from a CD drive from the stand point of "contol"?

If the factory radio knows how to contol the optional built-in CD Drive, why would it not know how to control the external CD dirve? I guess I am assuming that CD drives are standardized from the standpoint of "control", just as SD cards must be.

I don't believe the USP powered CD drives I am talking about have analog outputs (i.e. a place to plug in the auxilary cables). Their only connection is the USB port.

No argument is intended here, just trying to figure out an alternative to wasting half of the center console with the seldom used CD drive.

Plan to follow bill_de's suggestion about "ripping", right after I finish the "kicking and screaming". Would like to occasional play a borrowed CD without going through the intermediate steps of kicking, screaming, and ripping however.

Re: 2014 USB Powered CD Player Compatibility

In looking at the Uconnect 8.4 and 8.4 N User's Manual I find much similarity between the sections covering the Disk Mode and USB/iPOD Mode. Basic controls such as Seek, Browse, Info, and Suffle are present (and described identically) for both modes. Has anyone tried to operate a USB Powered CD drive using the USB/iPOD Mode?

Re: 2014 USB Powered CD Player Compatibility

Interesting discussion. My first "high tech" auto audio was an 8-track tape player. There's been a succession of different types of equipment to listen to music in our cars. One fades out, another takes its place. If you read the writing on the wall, cd players are disappearing, and will soon be gone. Hard drives were here briefly, now being replaced by flash memory. But you can be sure that the corporate music world is inexorably heading to streaming music, either by satellite, or through your phone or an equivalent, with a monthly charge, or as they call it, a revenue stream. The quality of the sound seems to have been deteriorating since the cd has been pushed aside. Of course many will say that music hasn't sounded quite so good since the demise of vinyl. We as consumers have been relegated to basically go with the flow.

I purchased a USB CD player in hope it would work. The car powered it, but it did not control or play the cd's. I asked the dealer about I stalling one and he said the decks were not available to them
