2015 Grand Cherokee Radio Software Recall Update ?

OK, here's the deal. I just received in the mail an, "Important Safety Recall Notice". Along with it came a USB "Chip" to install the software update. Has anyone done this? How did it go? What is this supposed to even accomplish?

I checked, and my current software number is low enough to require the update. It supposedly takes a half hour for this to happen once you, (or the dealer), starts the process. I don't relish the fact you have to let the car sit and idle for a half hour, but that's what they tell you MUST do. You can't drive it. I'm willing to try it, but I'm afraid it will cause problems. I just can't understand why a simply software update should take a half hour? Is the baud rate in the computer that slow?

It seems like a straight forward process. Just follow the steps. I don't want to take it to the dealer if I don't have to. You know what they'll do. They're not going to sit there and monitor the process. They'll start it and walk away leaving the vehicle running. Then get back to it when they get around to it. God only knows how long they will let the damn thing idle?

Who has done this and experienced success? If it fails, can it screw anything else up? I am tempted to just ignore the whole thing and leave it alone. I'm just not sure what to do at this point? I would like to wait until the weather cools off. Just look at how many people have grief trying to reset the oil change reminder. I don't want a disaster on my hands.

Frankly the chance of anyone taking over your vehicle is slim to none. With that being said, it actually isn't that difficult of a process. The car doesn't have to be running either, but does need to be in the run position. Mine went smoothly and took about 10 minutes.

Thanks for the quick reply. Which end of the "Chip" goes up? Do the shiny metallic contact points go up or down? The thing isn't marked.

My wife has the vehicle at the moment and I don't remember, however, if you push it in the wrong way and there is resistance pull it back out and try again. Don't force anything but it should go in fairly easily. If you accidentally put a little force the wrong way it shouldn't hurt anything.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I had mine in the run position but not on burning gas and idling. I followed the procedures to download the update onto my own USB thumb drive and install the update. It worked flawlessly and took about 15 minutes to install the actual software, and about 30 to 45 minutes overall including downloading the file, extracting, copying to USB and then executing the update.

My uconnect has operated flawlessly since the update with no issues, so just follow the directions and you'll be good. I agree with you about not wanting to take it to the dealer for that because it's an easy fix to do yourself and a lot less time consuming.

Oh, and one other thing if you do it, The screen does some goofy things as it resets itself like going monochrome and appearing like you messed up the liquid crystal display of an old laptop. This is also normal. Additionally throughout the process you can see progress bars and what step of the update you are on. Let us know how it goes.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee Radio Software Recall Update ?

Its just a USB drive. It can only go in one way. Pop it in and do the update its super easy. Infact I did mine using my own USB drive before they sent out any sort of recall. There is a website where you can download software updates and do them yourself.
I didn't notice anything different from your usual day to day use, however what I did notice is that my backup camera video got smoother and less studdery when backing up. My 2014 Summit sometimes had a choppy backup video feed and this update improved it! So im happy. Works great!

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee Radio Software Recall Update ?

So..... I'm going to try it later on. I like the fact you guys did it with the ignition in "RUN" without the engine running. I'm guessing it's not going to drain the battery all that much. Computers and I don't get along that well. So I'm going to read through all of it several more times, then give it a shot.

I'm guessing the shiny metallic tabs on the "Chip" go in facing down? That's the way the chip in my digital camera goes into my desktop. I like the fact you've said it only took 10 minutes. That sounds more like it. I'll report back later on if it went smoothly, or if all the neighbors came over because they could all hear me cussing!

I just noticed that you live in Glendale Arizona. I live at 75th and the 101. If you'd feel more comfortable, I'm more than happy to help you go through it.

Re: 2015 Grand Cherokee Radio Software Recall Update ?

Problems right off the bat. The USB "Chip" they sent me won't go into the port either way. It's almost like it's too wide. I called the number on the card, and the girl on the other end was worthless and told me to call the dealer. All they'll do is tell me to bring it in. If she can't even help me get the chip into the damn thing, what else can't she do? I knew this would be problematic.

I have mine on a USB and you're more than welcome to use it.

I appreciate it, but I'm just not getting why what they sent me won't work? This should simply slide right in, simple Simon. It won't. It will go into any other USB port I've got, so that tells me the port is bad. Most all USB ports have that plastic tab inside that is higher on one side than the other. The one on my vehicle seems like it's right in the middle. There is no way you could get anything into it.

I don't know if I should try sticking something in there and try to push it up, then try getting the chip in there. Or else just forget the whole thing?
