2015 wk2 adding amp and subs - LOC wiring help

Hello,

I purchased a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland two weeks ago and decided to have my amp and subs installed. I normally do my own installs but this time I decided to have a professional install it. When the install was done I went to test it out but could barely hear the subs!! The tech said that he used a LOC and tapped into the rear passenger side speaker and the signal is "too weak". I have an appointment to have the LOC moved to the front speaker tomorrow, but since this shop seems to have no experience with this vehicle I wanted to ask if anyone has ran into this issue before and if tapping into the front passenger side speaker will work. Is there a better way to wire the LOC?

1) JL JX1000/1
2) Alpine Type R Subs

Thanks in advance!

The Overland does come with a sub...but not nearly as powerful as I would like it to be

Hmmm. Then I wonder why the installer opted to tap into a rear passenger speaker instead of just directly into the sub output with the LOC. That's the way I would have done it anyway.

Re: 2015 wk2 adding amp and subs - LOC wiring help

I suppose common sense would say use the sub wires for the converter... I had a poor experience paying a professional a lot of money putting a 10w3 with a 500/1 JL setup on a car without a sub using the rest of the stock system. Volume wasn't linear. That's when I figured I'll never mix oem and aftermarket. One way or the other lol. Hope you get yours sorted out though, I'm sure there's a way!

I used a LC2i processor off the signal to the original sub, then into the monoblock amp. This worked flawlessly. You can see my full write up that I posted about 45 minutes ago. I cant imagine why they would tap your satellite speaker for a sub connect to begin with being how the built in amp has its own signal processing to cross low frequency away from such speakers.

I was thinking the same thing. That satellite speaker has the lows crossed out at the head unit, I think. So, there isn't even proper frequency to tap into there.

Ray, did you call the installer and ask why he tapped the satellite speaker feed instead of the sub speaker feed? Im curious to know what he says.

Re: 2015 wk2 adding amp and subs - LOC wiring help

Good news!! The LOC was moved to the front passenger speaker and it works! Still have to finish fine tuning my amp but as it stands it sounds good.

On a different note: I'm shopping around for a remote bass gain control. My question is: are remote control knobs interchangeable? Can I use a kicker control with my JL amp, or do I need to buy the more expensive JL brand or an Universal? Any suggestions on an inexpensive solution would be greatly appreciated.

I mean technically, they are only potentiometers, but I know the RJ jack types can be different. They all really do the same thing. You'd probably be better off just purchasing the one that belongs to the amp though. You've tried the manufacturer?

Greetings,

I am still wondering why the installer went to the front speaker. The fronts do not go down for the sub to take to advantage of the sub bass frequency range. The Alpine system cut off is around 55-60 hertz (cycles). You are missing everything under that.

Here is a thread from a couple of years ago that somebody was able to narrow down the exact setup:

Factory Frequency Response

Best for now.

I have to agree with 1stJeep on this... The door speakers are being crossed and protected by not allowing the lower frequencies to pass through them. The only factory speaker that receives the low frequencies you would want to capture as a source would be the subwoofer itself. The speaker wire run to the factory sub should have been modified to RCA, then plugged into a signal processor like a LC2i, then to the new amp, then to the new speaker...
