Re: 2016 Map Update

FYI, I was checking out the Jeep website yesterday, and under the owners tab, I noticed the Uconnect Software Update link... https://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/?origin=j
So I went there and put in my VIN, and it showed an update for my vehicle...

Update available
Your 2016 equipped with the system qualifies for the following software update:
Update 1: UCONNECT® 8.4AN_RA4_16.33.29_MY16
Service Bulletin ID: 08-057-16_REV.A
Release Date: 2016-09-06

It provided a download link, so I downloaded the file, extracted it to a USB drive and followed the instructions on the provided PDF to update the vehicle. Took about 20 minutes of sitting with it running, but it worked just fine...and cost nothing.

As you can see, it was released on Sept 6th.

They should offer a download option so you can just use your own USB drive. The you could just re-download the update at any time without even having to call them.

For that matter, if UConnect was on it, your Jeep could connect to your home WiFi and could find and apply updates as needed. For maps, all you should need is your VIN which would re-authorize the Jeep to re-download and apply the update.

Instead, we have a communications system that has allowed hackers to connect and perform software modifications, but not the legitimate customers.

Oddly enough, with the above hack, I was able to download the patch and apply it. I had to enter my VIN and everything. Despite that, a few weeks later, I got a USB stick in the mail with the update. Don't these guys talk to each other?
It is frustrating. I installed a Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX in my MX5 which uses HERE maps. They have a program called NAVIExtras which allows the downloading of updates and annual subscriptions to new maps to a USB stick which can be used to update the radio. If HERE can do it for Pioneer, they could do it for Chrysler. Of course, it might be that Pioneer had to develop the software, but Chrysler could do the same thing.
