430N (RHB) to 730N (RHR) conversion question

I waited to order my Overland until the Tech Package was available and when I got the call that I could order the Tech package, I was told that I could no longer order the 730N which I had also wanted. The dealer did not know what the 430N would look like on the Overland, but after going through this forum, it appears the main features I wanted on my Nav/Media Center are not available on the 430N - namely Sirius Traffic (showing the traffic on the nav map) and the ability to use voice commands change the radio stations and program the nav. As I understand it, with the 430N you must stop and put the car in park to program a new destination in the nav (I DO assume you can press the DETOUR button on the fly, correct??) and you must use the touch screen to change radio stations. I am not happy but have no other choice since that is the ONLY nav available with today's Overlands.

Here is my question: once the 730N (RHR) becomes available, how easy would it be for me to have my dealer change out the 430N for the new 730N? I understand I would have to buy the new 730N through the parts department - and that won't be cheap - but are there any reasons that the switch can't be done (mountings, power, connections, etc)?

Thank you!

I just picked up an Overland that I ordered. Was told that it would have the 730N, but it came with the 430N. At time of pick-up, I was then told that the 730N was no longer available and it was being replaced by the 430N. Turn out that was not true - ehe... My dealer now says that he will switch it out (for the upcharge of $465) after Jeep makes a conversion harness, which he said could be in 3 days or 6 months. I am not getting warm and fuzzies over this. I DO know that I want the 730N RHR. Does anybody have any info on the conversion harness - or if this is even the truth - or if it can be changed out without this 'harness'. My car was built in late Jan of 11, and I just picked it up March 4th...

Hey,

You should not need any ridiculous "harness".

Your bus speed is the same, and all the connectors are the same.

You may have to program the car for a RER via the witech tools at the dealer because they may not have the RHR in stock or program codes.

Also, you may need to add an antenna. The RHB is an EPROM gps flash, they also use the same antenna for Sirius as they do GPS, the RHR I believe has a different farka connection... May still work though. The others have always been separate.

As for voice recognition, the new ones are WAY better.

When I bought my Overland the dealer refused to do a swap with one of the several Limiteds on the lot that had RHRs. They offered to sell me a 730 RHR at cost from parts. That’s when the fun began…
First it was back ordered for over a month. Once I finally got it I did the install (which took all of 5 minutes). Then I discovered that Voice Command did not work. I have a tenant that works for a dealer here in Chicago and asked him to talk to his best technician. He had me come in and tried his best to make it work updating both the car and Dealer Connect. His diagnostics were showing that the microphone was not functioning. I put the RHB back in and went on my way with a promise from the tech that he’d call Chrysler to figure it out.
Sure enough he was told that it needs a harness (PN 82211666) that connects the radio with the mirror microphone and to get the remote USB port to work the USB needs to be disconnected from the external Hands Free module and a mini USB Jumper Cable (PN 68068278AA) needs to be installed as well. He gave me the printout detailing all this and yes, it is specific to the RHR.
The dealer that sold me the radio said it would be plug and play. In their defense it doesn’t appear that our friends at Chrysler made any notation anywhere in the parts system. I guess these douchebags never envisioned anyone doing an upgrade.

Nothing to report yet since I just ordered the parts on Friday. The microphone harness (82211666) looks like it's used in several applications over several model years besides our vehicles so unless it's on back order the dealer may be referring to the usb to usb adapter. I could live without the usb for a while if that's the case. I'll check with my dealer tomorrow regarding the status on both and get back with you.

In my mind the biggest issue is the lack of information the dealers have on making the swap. As much as I hate to defend a dealer it seems like both the parts guys and the techs are flying by the seat of their pants. I'm hoping that the tech will be able to tell me where the U Connect module is located so I don't have to spend a ton of time looking for it. The usb has to be disconnected from the module and plugged into the jumper which goes to the RHR. No one can tell me if the U Connect has to be unplugged as well. I guess it's going to be trial and error time...

Sorry to say but it's not looking good. I got the parts that I was told to order but it doesn't appear that they are going to work. While there are no instructions specific to the 2011 GC in the installation documents it looks like the new microphone cable is intended to plug into the mirror and the existing mirror connector is supposed to plug into the other connector on the harness. The trouble is that the connectors are different (16 pin on the harness and 20 pin on the mirror). I even found the Uconnect module in hopes that it might plug in there to no avail. The dealer is stumped as am I. I just got off of the phone with Jeep customer service. They told me that they don't handle technical issues since they rely on their dealers to handle them but opened a case escalating it to a senior customer service person. I'm supposed to get a call back tomorrow. I'm thinking that there might be a shiny new 730N RHR on eBay in a few days...

This is the tech tip from Chrysler - If upgrading a vehicle from a low line radio that has factory installed U-Connect with an external hands free module (HFM) to an RHR NAV radio with an internal HFM, be sure to also order and install the MOPAR wiring harness (PN 82211666). This harness will connect the upgraded RHR radio directly to the factory rear view mirror with integrated microphone and bypass the external HFM that is no longer needed. Otherwise, the HFM voice recognition function will not work. In order to get the remote USB port (if equipped) to work, the mini USB must be disconnected from the external HFM and connected to the back of the RHR radio. Part number 68068278AA is a mini USB jumper cable with male mini USB connectors on both ends. The RHR radio uses a dual satellite radio/GPS antenna (part number 05064350AA). All 2011 model year vehicles that came with a navigation radio should already have this antenna from the factory.
I haven't done this swap yet, so IDK if they put the right connectors or not

That's exactly the same information I received and subsequently ordered both those parts. When I checked the Mopar website again I noticed that it specifies that it "will not work with LMS sales code" which, best as I can tell refers to Smart Beam equipped vehicles. Of course, that's whats on my Overland. I've had a couple of thoughts including jumpering the microphone wires at the U Connect module and running them to the radio from there (since the U connect is supposed to be unplugged anyway after the radio swap) but truthfully I'm pretty tired of the hassle. For those of you that are wondering, the U connect module is located just to the left of the steering column. The mini USB in the console has a connector on the passenger side of the console. Just pull the panel off and you'll see it right there in front of you.

Thanks for all the good info bigbore (and others). Just wanted to make sure I'm understanding correctly. Everything about the 730N is working except for the Voice Command feature? Reason I ask, is that I think I've finally found a Jeep that has everything I want except that it has the 430N. I may be able to live without the voice command ... at least for a while until they have a way to make this work.

I would be completely fine with the 430N except for the fact that the bluetooth audio streaming does not work with the iPhone 4 unless the iPhone 4's screen is completely turned off. When it's on, the music sounds choppy and fast. I tried it out on a couple different vehicles at a dealer a week or so ago. The 730N never had this problem, which is why I'm interested in it.

rb3,

Sorry, the site would not allow me to reply to your pm because I haven't made enough posts (what @#%#@!). I'll reply here...

I got a special deal on my 730 because the dealer goofed up on a few things and they must have figured that they'd better honor the price they quoted me or risk getting sued. I have friends in the car business that gave me the name of a law firm that specializes in litigation against dealers. Funny how they became more reasonable when I mentioned the firm.

Anyway, to answer your question, I remember being told that the dealer's actual cost was somewhere around $1475. A good price is around $1700 though they are hard to get so most dealers are sticking closer to retail ($2100). There's one thing I want you to be clear about- It's also the hands-free that won't work, not only the voice command, which is a really big deal for me. I don't know what model GC you're looking at but if it's not an Overland or another model without the Smart Beam feature (which dims the high beams automatically) the same cables I got might make it work completely. The cables are about a $140 but installing them will probably result in being charged about 2 hours of labor. The radio itself would take less than 10 minutes to swap, even for a novice.

You're right the price they quoted you seems kind of stiff. For me it would also depend on what I'm paying for the vehicle. I got a great deal on mine paying $1200 under invoice for a Black/New Saddle Hemi Overland so having to mess around with buying the 730 outright and then planning on selling the 430 didn't bother me much. At least I didn't feel that way back then. Now... well that's a different story.

Hope this helps. I wish you the best of luck. Let me know how it works out.

The model I'm looking at is an Overland, which has Smart Beam. Sounds like I may hit the same problem you're describing.

I think if I decide to go this route, I will have to put a caveat on the dealer that I will not take delivery if the 730N swap doesn't work 100%. Who knows if I'll succeed with that, but here's hoping. :)

Thanks for the info.

I spoke with my dealer on Monday. He expects the cables this friday 6/10 (or next).
He scheduled the install for next Tuesday and will call Monday if they did not come in. It sounds like they are close to being deployed.

A dealer here locally claimed Tuesday they took two of their Jeeps and swapped a 730N into one that had the 430N and it all worked. Based on that, I placed some $ down as a deposit that will be refunded if the 730N conversion doesn't work on the one they have coming in for me next week. I'll let you know how that turns out.

STILL waiting on the dealership to get this one sorted out. From what you've said bigbore, an Overland with a 430N is going to have the problem because of the auto dim rear view mirror because it has a 20-pin connector and the wiring harness is a 16-pin connector (according to your earlier post).

I was thinking about it more this morning and theoretically, Chrysler obviously has the 730N installed and working in Overland models sent from the factory, so there's got to be some sort of cable/harness that's making it be possible. I hope what that means is that eventually that cable/harness will be made available so this will all just work. Are part numbers written on the wiring harnesses? Perhaps someone with a working 730N in an Overland could open up their dash and check ... a dealer should be able to do this and know for sure. Too bad it's like pulling teeth to get them to do anything other than get you to "buy whatever's on their lot."

Couldn't live without a vehicle anymore so went and bought the Jeep that has the 430N. They are still on the hook for putting in the 730N when it comes in. Weirdest thing is that the Bluetooth Streaming Audio works now with my iPhone with the 430N. All the other times I've tried it it's been choppy chipmunk music unless the screen of my iPhone was turned off (like others have mentioned in other threads).

Got my Jeep back today from the dealership. The conversion from 430N -> 730N is 98% working! Voice commands, calling, etc. are all working. :)

The only thing that doesn't work is when I plug my iPhone into the USB port in the center console. My music turns into chipmunks, quiet, and choppy. Is this what the 68068278AA mini USB cord would have been for ... and they just forgot to install it?
