Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

Just got my Overland, with the RHR. I'm not pleased. It doesn't play well with the iPhone 4 w/ 4.3, including throwing up that damned "this device is not compatible" message. No cover art. It's a pain in the ass to navigate through. Both connectors.

I'm synching up my old iPod Nano now to see how well it works... then I'm going to try my older (Gen 3) iPod Touch to see if it is any different.

It doesn't pull addresses from the address book on the iPhone 4 via Bluetooth, so that's pretty useless for navigation.

Annoyed.

edit: other than the radio, i love the overland. what an upgrade from my 02 TJ. whew...

edit: ipod nano shows *some* cover art, but it's not the cover art stored on the ipod -- it's coverart from the internal gracenote database. ipod touch shows cover art only from the gracenote database that's on the hard drive. i couldn't make voice response work with any of them, but i might just be stupid and wasn't saying the right thing -- i had to select playlists on the screen itself... iphone 4 doesn't really work well at all; i couldn't reliably control it. i guess i'm going to end up dumping my music directly to the hard drive, but it pisses me off that i'll lose my playlists...

Are you seeing the *real* album art that's stored on your iPhone, or some generic cover art that GraceNote stores on the hard drive? I thought I had album art working until I realized it wasn't showing the same graphic on the RHR display as was showing when I play it on my iPhone unplugged...

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

Ok, so I finally got to the bottom of the USB not working in the armrest. Took out the hu and low and behold there is a new connector for the USB armest on the back of the hu (something I've not seen on previous pics of 430's or 730rer's). It's a USB Mini type b, similar to what you'd see on a camera. In fact, there are 2 together, one for the armrest and one left unplugged (maybe usable). The connector is shrouded in a propriatary connector. I'll take pics this weekend when I install a lock pick. Anyway, the USB armrest connector was simply not plugged in all the way. Plugged it in and wa-la, it picked up my iPod perfect from the armrest!

As for album art, i played fields of gold-the best of sting and it displayed the correct album art from it. I couldn't tell you if it had this cd's album art stored internally in grace notes or not?

I didn't notice a second connector... interesting... I've only had my Overland during the dark (it took TWO HOURS to sit through the finance guy's crap at the dealer.. I almost jumped up and choked him to death), so I haven't examined it very closely yet.

I've decided the cover art really doesn't matter much, since you can switch the display to show the map in the right hand side of the screen anyway, and that's almost always where I'll have it..

As far as my iPhone throwing the "this is not an iphone compatible device" alert... well.. that irks me, but I used to see that on my old Pioneer setup. I think I'm going to just stick my old iPod Touch in the center console and keep it updated, since keeping my phone tethered is kind of a pain in the butt anyway, and I'll charge it off one of the two outlets.. so...

Ultimately, I'm okay with things... iPod/iPhone integration isn't nearly as good as I had hoped, but it's useable. Hopefully a future RHR update will make it a little better...

I kind of wish TravelLink was more integrated with the Nav system -- like it would show upcoming gas stations and prices or something on the map... but, again, it's acceptable.

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

I don't know if I'm imagining it because of things I've read in here, but I think I'm getting static on the iPod connection via the center console -- it's very intermittent crackles, almost like you'd hear if you were listening to a vinyl record. I'm going to make an MP3 of silence and play it at max volume later and see what happens.

I'm definitely not getting voice control of the iPod in any useful way. All I can get is "track 1-255", "next track", "previous track". I don't get anything useful like "play playlist 'x'" or "play artist 'x'".

No need to make one - just grab the Elbert Hubbard audio book

You know what would be AWESOME? If Chrysler would bother to release a freaking manual for the RHR....

I agree! I order manuals for my JGC last week and specifically asked for the 730RHR (not RER). The lady said "yes RHR is what I'm sending you". Guess what she sent me... the freaking RER manual! !@#$#$%%$

I'm interested to hear if anyone is having trouble with voice recognition of commands.

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

So far, no. It's recognizing different names in my address book flawlessly. I'll check other commands (radio, climate, etc)

Check nav destinations too. I had trouble with that on my test drive but didn't have enough time to do much. Did you run the voice recognition calibration program?

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

OK, since Chrysler and the dealer don't seem to have a clue about the product they're selling... can someone else with an RHR and an iPod/iPhone tell me if you get an "iPod" or "iPhone" button as a source when you plug your iPhone/iPod in, and if you can actually use voice commands with it? Also, what is the current version of the software running your unit?
