Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

If I buy a jeep with the 430 in it, can I upgrade to the 730 through the dealer and have them install it right there or is that something I have to get from the factory?

You can, but it won't be cheap.

Thanks I meant before the purchase. Just curious if it's possible or you get what's in that particular vehicle?

I have been trying to do that with my dealer right now as the 730N is holding up some builds. They offered to change the unit for me at a cost of $2100.00 I did ask if there is some sort of buy back for the change and the answer was a very strong NO. There is only $50.00 difference between the two on the Mopar site.

Oh well looks like I will be sticking with the 430N

Did you do that before purchasing or after?

I have tried before and after. I was going to just order a custom but they kept talking 3 to 4 months for delivery so I will just live with the 430N for now.

Hey everyone with an RHR: be very careful with bluetooth audio streaming from an iPhone 4. The three times I've tried, the entire RHR has locked up about 3/4 through the first song. It won't respond to anything (the EVIC freezes too).

Powering off the JGC then powering it back up a minute later results in a solid black screen and no response for 60 seconds. Then the Jeep logo comes up and it boots up.... and says it is initializing the navigation system for the first time. 30 seconds later, it runs normally... your pairings and presets will still be there, but everything on the HDD will be gone: music, pictures, and worst of all, all of the addresses you spent an hour typing into the stupid little screen.

Dealer has never heard of this happening, but admitted mine is only the sixth RHR equipped vehicle they have received. They're going to pass it up the chain....

Meanwhile, if you don't absolutely need BT streaming, I'd avoid it.

On a similar note: anyone know how to back the $!&!@ hard drive up to a USB key or external drive?

Oh.. One more RHR annoyance... Since the address book transferred from an iPhone doesn't have addresses in it (only phone numbers) I've been copying the contact from the iPhone address book folder to the Default folder then adding the street address.

This works well. Until you try to use voice control to dial the phone to one of those contacts. It will bring up a numerical list showing two of the same contact name, and ask you to pick one. It's not smart enough to realize the two entries (from the iPhone folder and the default folder) have the same phone numbers.

Even worse: if you delete the phone numbers from the entry in 'default' it brings both up, and you have to guess which one has the phone numbers.. If you pick incorrectly it fails.

Annoyance #2...

Plug an iPod into the RHR and go to the search screen. Hit the artist button. If you have more than a hundred pages, the A-Z button doesn't light up. So you get to scroll through the list page by page. If you pull that screen up and let it sit (about 1 second per page, I estimate), the A-Z button finally pops up and you can pick the first letter of the artist (but that's it, no autocomplete). I figure it's indexing it. But as soon as you turn off the JGC, that index disappears and you have to wait again next time (which I guess sort of makes sense; you could have disconnected, added music, reconnected). What really blows about this is that it doesn't seem to even start indexing artists, genres, songs, etc., until you first go to that page. I wish it started the moment the iPod was plugged in.

Hell, I wish all of that indexing would be used for VR and not just finding the first letter on the screen (that you can't type on when the damned JGC is in motion). Grr...

Crap like this makes me wish companies that make user interfaces would contract with Apple. Say what you will about Apple products, those guys have the whole user experience thing nailed.

Edited: the vinyl record popping sounds when an iPod or iPhone is connected via either console or faceplate is definitely there. I found a silent mp3 and played it while driving and it is very audible. Happens with iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3, iPod Nano (whatever version the last pre-touchscreen one was). Multiple cables, both from Apple and not. I suspect it's interference from the ignition system: it seems to go away when the engine is off. In all honesty, the static is something I can live with: it's not that bad, but you do hear it.

I've always wondered what the 3 little cars in the top right corner mean?
