Question 8.4an Output Hacking

Hey all,
I've got my 2014 WK2 on order w/ the 8.4an RA4 unit. My intention is to replace all the audio gear (except the tightly integrated RA4 unit) and I'm trying to understand the best way to do this...

What I've found so far is that the post-AMP audio is heavily filtered/EQ'd/Cross-overed... requires summing of multiple channels to get a full range output before going into another amp.

I know that the audio output from the RA4 to the AMP is static, line-level.. meaning that the volume, fade/balance is 100% controlled over the CAN bus by the RA4 to the AMP.

However... In my can-hack days.. I found that if I removed the amp from the CAN bus, the radio would switch to a variable, full range output on front and rear audio out pins... (still possibly heavily EQ'd, but at least it's full range), assuming it was driving the speakers directly.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case? It'd be a huge help since I'm planning to swap all my speakers / amp from my 2012 WK2 into the 2014 WK2 when it gets here.. but if the audio out doesn't go variable from the RA4 without the AMP on the CAN bus.. I'm going to have some more figuring to do...

If you need help figuring out how to test this, and are planning to have the rear driver's side quarter-panel removed.. let me know.. I'm happy to discuss the details over the phone in order to help get the answer!

THANKS to any one in advance for checking this...
LK

Re: 8.4an Output Hacking

Greetings,

In addition to your efforts, you should contact iDatalink Maestro. Last I heard, they are working on a by-pass harness of the JGC 2014+.

iDatalink - Maestro - Home

Also, try a PM for member 12V GUY, this member has a number of post on iDatalink Maestro.

Question: Are you getting the Alpine system in you 2014?

Best for now.

Re: 8.4an Output Hacking

Thanks 1stJeepGC for the tips...

Yes, my 2014 WK2 will have the 9 speaker alpine system. My plan is to drop that to a 8 speaker system (tweets, woofers in front door.. and coaxial woofers/tweets in rear door) along with the JL Stealthbox. ( full details on the current system in this thread, but I know 1stJeepGC has already seen that )...

I simply cut the rear (D-pillar) speakers loose... their placement (IMO) is too direct for tweets, and I don't really need more rear sound-stage fill on mids..

I'll reach out to 12v Guy and see if he has any insights...

Remember, if anyone can test the output of the RA4 with the factory amp disconnected, please report back...

Thanks again!

Greetings,

I agree and especially in the JGC the D pillar does not require more hi-end frequencies of the tweeter. I installed a wide band full range driver from HAT, the L3SE, which is setup as band-pass dropping out at 15K. This brings in an excellent rear fill. The rear door also has a 3" HAT, L3V2. The rear stage now has the perfect balance for a detailed SQ surround sound system.

I when I get back later, I will look over the factory Alpine amp and check out the inputs again. My guess, it has to be the same as my 2011, unless good old Chrysler's 2014 specs forced a change.

Best for now.

I doubt the amp specs have changed from 2011 through 2014.. but my concern is that the head-unit has definitely changed... The RHB,RER, etc.. units had the ability to drive variable output at speaker level if they were in a vehicle w/o the Amp... but I'm wondering if the RA3/RA4 redesign has removed the high-level output capability, and thus the variable output capability.. all together..

Doesn't matter to me if the level is high, or line level coming out.. as long as it's variable, I'm still good..

Thanks!
