Re: 9 vs 19 speaker Harmon Kardon

I've spent the past several weeks comparing the 2015 Overland to the Summit. The main difference is really just the HK Audio "19 speaker" vs the "9 speaker" Alpine in the Overland. I went to a local dealer to make my decision based on the sound of the 2 systems.

As been mentioned in this thread, the HK is not 19 speakers, really just 14 speakers, but some of them are 2-way, so that's why they say 19. The subwoofer is also a HK 10" vs the 8" in the Alpine.

I connected my iPhone via bluetooth to the Overland in the dealership and played a few latin jazz and a few lounge songs I know well. No matter how much I played with the equalizer settings, the volume or the surround sound, I could not get decent sound out. The bass was either too low or distorted at higher levels and had no depth or thump, just loud. The highs and mids were better, but a bit washed out.

For real listening off an iPod or CD, the Alpine 9 speaker system is a big disappointment. If you're listening to FM or AM, or good audio its not that important to you, it may be adequate, just adequate.

Playing the same songs via bluetooth int he Summit with the HK system, was a different animal. The sound filled the cabin. The bass was very deep and felt thumpy vs. just being loud. The highs and mids were clear and well balanced. The surround also worked very well.

I have a 2008 BMW 328 with a 9 spk Logic 7 system, which I think is one of the best I've heard in any car ever, and the Summit's HK system reminded me of that.

Long story short. If you have any respect for yourself as an audio enthusiast, and I assume you do since you're reading this, you would consider the Alpine system to be utter garbage, as I have.

I've come to the conclusion that most people just dont care about good sound. Otherwise, Jeep wouldn't be able to sell this Alpine crap in a $40k+ SUV.

The sound system is only one feature difference between the Overland and the Summit, but until recently, it was a deciding factor for some folks. Now that the HK option is available for the Overland from the factory, folks can choose which trim level they want based on the many other differences.

Greeting,

Correct, 14 speaker placement locations. The system is 19 speakers as the 2-way counts as 2 separate drivers regardless on how they are powered or the crossover method.

Best for now.

Greetings,

For some the Alpine system is a major upgrade from a prior system and they love it. The HK system is whole different category. As an audio enthusiast regarding the HK and this is just my honest opinion, the speaker placement is not to my liking, however it is major upgrade over the Alpine.

Then again, both systems have to follow the specifications given by FCA, which includes the budget. I think if they had more money in the budget for better speakers, the Alpine would sound better and also the HK. At these prices we should be getting better material.

For me, I am very happy with my Logic 7 custom built system in my JGC that once upon a time started off with an Alpine system.

Best for now.

Nominate Re: 9 vs 19 speaker Harmon Kardon

So I've had my 2014 Jeep GC Summit for a week now. The "19" spk harman kardon sound system is by far the most impressive feature in this truck. The sound is amazing and I would buy it again, but here are some notes on the sound.

+1 The surround sound is a very noticeable improvement. Well done.

+1 The cabin in the summit is very quiet.

-2 The bass is really deep and heavy, but difficult to manage. I have it set way down on the built in EQ to minus five, and it still seems to overcome the mids and highs, on certain tracks. I'm looking to find a way to lower the gain on this 10" sub.

-1 I would like it to be 20% louder. At the loudest levels, I still want a bit more.

-1 While listening to audio over Bluetooth, the music lowers itself whenever I receive a text message. I have not found a way to disable this yet, and ruins the whole purpose of this great audio option.

Because of these small issues I give it a 9 out of 10. (Based on gut feeling, not math)

Can't you raise the mids and highs? And, wouldn't that give you more volume. No audiophile here, just guessing.

Re: 9 vs 19 speaker Harmon Kardon

Hi. Increasing the mids and highs would change the quality of the sound much more than their individual volumes. An EQ setting is not the same as gain. The 10" subwoffer reminds me of a bazooka I once owned. But keeping the EQ Sub setting between -5 and -6 seems to be the best fit.

Re: 9 vs 19 speaker Harmon Kardon

Greeting,

I lot of folks get that concept wrong that the eq adds volume. To get any significant boost will require an amp.

The eq with in the JGC in both the Alpine and HK is already set to the parameters by the manufacture in their respectful DSP/Amp unit. That setting is what they consider a flat response. When we adjust the eq, we are merely playing with that curve setting.

Best for now.

Re: 9 vs 19 speaker Harmon Kardon

New Jeep owner, just wanted to chime in on this as stereos have always been important to me.

In the days when you could just rip out and replace, I always had a higher end aftermarket rig, and my best friend has an HK system in his Audi 8, and a THX certified one in his Lincoln MKS, so I have some good comparisons

I haven't heard the HK system in the Jeep, but for the life of me I cannot understand criticism of the 9 speaker Alpine.

I think it sounds incredible for a stock system, good enough that I'm not even considering any upgrade to it

My former car was an Infiniti G37, with a Bose Studio on wheels package, to which I added a JL Audio 500W mono amp driving a 12" JL Sub

This system slays it, completely

Better separation, better imaging, and cleaner at high volume, and I was shocked at how well the Ipod interfaces

I play 320kps rips from my I-pod classic, just FYI as far as source

Is it as good as the best systems I've had?

Of course not, but still very, very good, and a positive, not a negative

I've always done mods, but this ride is a major attempt to simplify my life - very happy with the stock 20" black rims, Alpine audio, and electronics package out of the box

The new car high has yet to wear off for these first couple of months : )
