Aftermarket Stereos for WK2

Has anyone replaced or is thinking of replacing their 130 or 430 stereo units with an aftermarket unit? I've decided to get a Laredo "E" 4x4 with Off-Road-1 and factory hitch so I can have the fold-flat passenger seat. The problem is I'm not fond of the 130 stereo (the 430 quoted to me was $1600) or the cloth seats. I can get full leather heated/vented seats at an upholsterer, but cannot find an audio solution.

Are there any audiophiles who can recommend an aftermarket head unit and know what adaptor(s) I would need? The local shops I've talked to haven't been much help. I'd like a unit like the 430 but it isn't worth over $1000 to me. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Re: Aftermarket Stereos for WK2

I picked up a Pioneer AVIC-Z120 for my 2011 Laredo 4x4. Good luck getting any solid information from any local shops, I wasn't able to get zip. I was able to get the AVIC on Amazon for about $850 delivered (I got a 30% off coupon for any Pioneer Car Electronics. Up until that point, I was going to hold out for a MyGIG unit) and another $100 mail-in rebate. Had an AVIC unit, XM Receiver installed & hard wired a Valentine Radar to the interior lights above the rear view mirror. Had to pay extra for an adapter for the steering wheel controls & the actual dash kit (they used a 2010 but it needs to be slightly modified to fit). All in all, the install cost me another $500 after taxes. Was unsure if I made the right move until I picked up my truck w/the NAV installed. Personally, I couldn't be happier w/it. Hope this helps...

Re: Aftermarket Stereos for WK2

I'm going through similar debate, but may want to replace the 730N RER.

Yes, it's easiest to match the harness plugs, but not required and sometimes not ideal if it dictates a lesser head unit simply to match a harness.

Rewiring the harness to a desired head unit sometimes is best, and it's not that difficult unless existing wiring is inadequate to handle the head unit's features.

IMO, choose the head unit and features that you desire most, and rewire into the new head unit's wiring plugs. It's easy enough to add additional component inputs such as a usb or ipod. If you want to also add subs/speakers/amps, then that will require some new vehicle wiring regardless.

If you haven't already, Crutchfield's site is a great start for info.

Why do u want to get rid of the 730N? What does it lack that you are looking for?

To be fair, the 730N may be perfectly fine, I'm not quite sure yet until using it for a while. I'd also really like to pull and compare the Alpine OEM speakers, 8" sub, and amp to aftermarket components. My rig doesn't arrive until later next week.

That said, the interface/controls/low res nav screen seem to be consistent concerns voiced by others here, and the 730N is being retired soon anyway.

Re: Aftermarket Stereos for WK2

From what I've been reading elsewhere, the wiring is the critical issue more than what unit to pick. So if there are suggestions on units, it would be very helpful to know the successful install details for a 2011 WK2 that enables steering wheel controls to work as well as not cause the vehicle system to throw any codes or create another electrical gremlin.

It would probably be best to wait for awhile until there is more information available from folks like Crutchfield, or even via Milous at the wk2jeeps.com website. Doubtful any proper adapters are available yet for these Jeeps.

+1 no problem on the speakers and sub, will do soon. Won't get to the head unit or amp till later though.

Below is a link showing the wiring/pin outs for the RER unit harnesses 7 categories up from the lower left menu (thanks to Immo). Cannot seem to find one for the Laredo base model, but someone has to have it somewhere? It would likely be a combination of the C1 and C2 plugs with lesser pinouts.

Edit: Metra already lists the 2011 speaker/sub dimensions with depths as well, though looks like doorpanels and trim need to come out before speaker swaps. Maybe more of a PITA than originally hoped for, we'll see.

Re: Aftermarket Stereos for WK2

Crutchfield is saying that the mygig radios are not quite a double-din size, so the aftermarket head units won't fit. It sounds like you guys disagree with that?
