I think uconnect should upgrade their wifi service from 3G to LTE(4G). 3G sux!

Re: All-New and Easy-to-Use 'Uconnect Access' Services

One big thing that was explained to my at the show was that they are changing the boot order of the uconnect system to speed up operation from the app. If you ever started your car and tried to access the pandora/iheart/srt apps you know how long they take to load. The above apps are on the same level as used to remotely start/unlock/lock the vehicle.

By changing the boot order they will make the reaction time for the app quicker. Hopefully these updates will make the $14.99 subscription fee worth it.

I Agree, was quite disappointing when I found out our brand new 2015 model had 3G... 3G is so 2010....

Bad thing is, that's likely not just a software thing but an actual hardware limitation so when they do finally catch up to the year it will require either swapping out the internal hardware in the unit (and likely hacking the software to make it recognize it) or upgrading the entire unit...

I have been complaining about the $15 rate to anyone who will listen.. Friend of mine (GM Guy) informed me it's not so bad after all as OnStar is $20 / Mth and really doesn't do much more than the UConnect system ( or at least doesn't do more than the UConnect system WILL do with the above upgrade).

**** OnStar is 4G but that just kicked off in late build 2014 models****

Maybe we really are getting a deal compared to the competition but also makes me think they will likely increase the price soon.

They had better let us upgrade to 4G. Realize it will not be free but... Hubbie had a new GMC pickup that OnStar would not work after three years because their equipment was obsolete. Kinda remembering upgrading the equipment was not even an option. Grr and found this out AFTER keys were locked in it. Had to call a locksmith whereas I could have just reactivated OnStar for less.

It would be nice if these radios had an industry-standard connectivity module. Where you could change / upgrade it in the future. Right now, it seems that the 8.4AN is tied to Sprint's network and 3G service. It would be good if I could hop on down to my local auto parts store and buy a module for AT&T LTE and install it.

I can't imagine Sprint is making any real contributions with the 3G service for the uconnect. Maybe if no one purchases the service at all they may want to upgrade.

I never purchased but i know and have used 3G and hate it ever since 4G came out a few yrs back.

The QNX setting under UConnect could easily handle the ability to buy dealer upgrades for newer phone cards, or even ones that could be attached to other networks.

At CES, would have expected a few catcalls and boos from any geeks in the area over not already providing this.

Same. Value added services need to provide value equal to the cost of the service. Look what AAA provides for $50/year. Flat tire. Out of gas. Maps. Travel assistance.

The monthly fee to occasionally send an address remotely or remotely unlock the car is crazy high IMHO. If you use the service frequently, maybe, but otherwise a very high fee.

If the justification for the fee is the telecom access fees then I understand, but why not bypass the telecom and make it possible to send an address to the car from your phone while sitting in or near the car or while the car is in the vicinity of a wifi hotspot. Your wifi hotspot on your phone could provide internet access and unlock the car remotely if you are standing outside the car looking into the locked vehicle. You could "send to the car" your destination address and then have it transferred to the car when you climb in with your phone.

$50 / year is as high as I would go also. Just barely. Only way I would justify a cent more is if I needed remote vehicle tracking.

Along the same lines, I am surprised that when my iPhone is connected to car there is no way to select an address in my contacts to map to. I can call any phone number in the phone contacts displayed on the car's screen; why isn't there a way to choose a phone contact address as a navigation destination?

Re: All-New and Easy-to-Use 'Uconnect Access' Services

I think the problem is that the sellers/manufacturers will look at features with a greedy eye and keep it a profit center as long as people will pony up for the monthly fees. As a consumer, I am irritated that the ability to connect to the internet is conveniently ( for the manufacturers ) only able to be accomplished with a monthly charge when I already pay for and possess mobile internet access on my phone.

Too bad that they aren't satisfied by the huge premium people pay for the navigation features when Garmin sells a decent unit for so little, or any modern phone has navigation features built in.

So you also want the ability to send an address to your expensive navigation system? That will cost you extra... Monthly... I find it insulting when the car could easily connect to a wifi hotspot and perform the same functions on demand with no extra monthly fees. It would be smart and decent to offer the monthly fees to people who DIDN"T already have a phone with internet connection and hotspot or who wanted remote monitoring of a vehicle that wasn't in the range of a hotspot.

Don't pay the monthly fees. Send a message. If no one bought it, it would be changed, but as long as they can realize a profit from the subscription service, it will remain.

Paul

The guys behind the Rax Jailbreak are looking into a way to provide internet to the Uconnect system from a connected phone. Hopefully this comes to fruition and solve these simple limitations...
