since FCA has the info (and has since the second they connected the radio to the battery), and their websites stink, it's almost certain that half of china knows your vehicles' location every second (and our own FBI/NSA/CIA/DEA/Etc could at a moments notice- maybe even someone's divorce lawyer with a warrant) So why shouldn't we also have access?

**** OnStar is 4G but that just kicked off in late build 2014 models****

Maybe we really are getting a deal compared to the competition but also makes me think they will likely increase the price soon.
delphi connect is a OBDII dongle you get from verizon or us cellular. I have verizon. You pay verizon $5 a month to connect to your accounts shared data - which also allows you to turn on a 4g hotspot in your car with your data bucket. Then Delphi gets $5 for the telematics. So $10 total and 4g and wifi hotspot included.

I'd prefer it be 4g also. But to be honest we're not streaming video or doing anything really data intensive. So 3g is probably fine. Basically yelp might send a search request of a couple dozen characters and get back a few thousand characters back. A keyfob request might be a few packets, an alarm activation or new vehicle health alert might be just a few packets. The monthly report can get pulled overnight or when nothing else is happening. Even full firmware updates could easily be send over 3g in a staggered fashion (the image size isn't really much bigger than an smartphone update which until recently where pushed overnight on 3g for many phones).

The weather, traffic, and other siriusxm stuff comes from their satellite.

If I wanted a hotspot i'd turn on my phone's and not get ripped off and just use my shared data on 4G with better coverage.

I'm sure sprint charges them a tiny amount for 3g and would want something more for 4g so that's why FCA picked sprint. Might have even factored in to them leaving verizon becasue verizon is moving to 4g only and may have told FCA to pay for 4G now but FCA thought 3G was good enough.

I'd rather they picked verizon 4g so the coverage would be the largest footprint. I also wish they worked with the nav folks to send traffic data over cellular so it's more real time over more streets but they didn't. In the end, I live in a well populated area so being on sprints third place network with 3g only is 'good enough' for what the system does I think.

Wouldn't it be great if Chrysler/Jeep would use the built-in 3G to pipe in the software and firmware updates/TSB's/Recalls/etc.? I mean, if the technology is already in the vehicle, why are trip(s) to the dealer required? Even Microsoft lets you decide to automatically update Windows, or notify you when an update is available. Why not Jeep?

The uconnect and pcm are still separate systems , for good reason. So that may not happen for a while. I do agree that's how it should be done in the future though.

Sometimes a Microsoft update messes something up, but it doesn't leave you stranded on the side of the road.

I'm thinking along the lines of you turn on the car and you get a screen telling you updates are available, and what they are for. You then have to the option to download and install now, or when you next turn the car off, or at a later date/time/place that you decide (maybe near a dealership in case it gets bricked).

Yep.. Been saying this for years. And, its often a fight with a grease monkey arguing the merits of flashing any updates that are available. No reason the software defined vehicle of today should rely upon the $5,000 witech of yesterday to install a goddamn firmware update. It's absurd.

Re: All-New and Easy-to-Use 'Uconnect Access' Services

For those of you hoping that the current UConnect units are software upgradable to 4G... they are not upgradeable as the hardware modem is 3G EVDO only. There is no LTE hardware inside the units to enable. Sorry to disappoint anyone, but that's where we stand with the current UConnect implementation. I fully expect the 2016 units to be 4G with the new Jeep Grand Cherokee refresh.

Kinda figured this would be a hardware upgrade too. The real question is it just a simple card/modem swap (with software of course) or is it going to be something stupid like you have to replace the whole radio unit..... I.E. cost prohibitive.

The modem is soldiered on to the circuit board. Bummer, I know.
