Not sure... I think I read a post somewhere (either on this forum or Jeep Forum) where someone ordered the HK Sub and installed it as an upgrade... I guess for my part, I didn't know enough about the HK Sub to be able to make that call particularly as to whether or not the HK sub is a dual 2ohm voice coil design, and if so how efficient the sub is... given that I would have to believe that the HK system uses a completely different amp than the alpine system I would think that the sub could well have different operating parameters and the differences then might not make that HK sub play well together with the Alpine amp... so with that said, if anyone has done this upgrade with the HK sub I would love to see some info on it, I just didn't know enough about it which is why I went with something that I did have more info on!

Re: Alpine 9 Speaker Subwoofer Upgrade

I've been thinking the same thing.... going the HK sub route. I wonder what they cost?

Re: Alpine 9 Speaker Subwoofer Upgrade

Greetings,

The HK sub does require more power than what the Alpine produces for those channels. My feeling is, as you turn the power up on the Alpine, distortion will occur at the higher levels much quicker. Knowing the way Mopar prices work, it might be more money than the Stealthbox.

The OP's method of improving the sub with the Helix driver is better way to go.

Best for now.

Alpine 9 Speaker Subwoofer Upgrade

I would only use the HK box itself... mainly for the 10" capability. Then I would go with something like the Helix or something comparable that the factory Alpine amp could handle.

Re: Alpine 9 Speaker Subwoofer Upgrade

Yeah I don't see why that wouldn't work... The helix needs about .6 cubic ft. in a sealed box configuration so you might want to post and if someone that has had the HK box out and played with it to see if they have a volume measurement for it! I could see it working though as it's not like there are too many different ways to configure a box shape to the contour of the location in question and heck as long as the box is too big you could always fill it in some as necessary!

Re: Alpine 9 Speaker Subwoofer Upgrade

Lots of long posts here, I cant read them all without getting frustrated.
One thing people should all know about the FACTORY system.

It is CAN controlled from the radio to the amp. which means the output from the factory radio is FIXED, and can not be directly interfaced to. You MUST keep the factory amp in order to have any volume control.

People mentioned summing units, which are a MUST if you plan on upgrading and getting the full potential from any new speakers you install. You will also need a 5 channel amp.

so...

Internally in the factory amp, the outputs are all crossed over, therefore the speakers only see specific ranges of frequencies.

The front door 6x9 are band pass crossed over in the fact amp so they only play from 100-to approx 1000 hz. Installing a high end pair of Focal or any 6x9 in the front door WILL work, however you will only be using approx 30% of the speakers' capability. The human Ear is less sensitive to mid range freq, so while the Focal will sound better than factory, a middle of the pac pair may sound just as good @ half the cost.

Going with a 6x9 component would result in the same, and NOT be correct for the new speakers. They are designed a specific way with specific crossover points, and to put them into a system with another manufacturer crossover could cause the speakers to fail, as well as not sound their best, or as intended. (in this case you would put a 6x9 mid and tweeter set that has a crossover designed for it, then use the fact amp crossover)

The result will be a new 6x9 that only plays mids. no bass, no highs.

now for the rears.

Rear speaker are High pass in the amp at approx 120hz. Again. no bass, only mids and highs from the rear speakers. (rear doors)

The factory sub plays from approx 120hz and down.

My scope wasnt cooperating to get exact freq, so I used an app on my phone, which just displays bands.

I personally have a Kicker ZXSUM8, in which I have the fact sub, fact rears, and fact front 6x9 all summed (merged) to my front channel on my Alpine PDX-V9.
Using the Rears, instead of the front tweeters summed to my front channel is a world of difference, as their is a noticeable gap between where the front 6x9 peaks, and the front door tweeters go down to.

Also the pictures posted by the OP poster are of the factory box, but the internal air space is al most 1.25 cu ft. before sub displacement.

Simply putting a different 8" sub in there may or may not work. It will 100% depend on what the specific sub calls for in a sealed enclosure. I personally installed an AudioBahn Alum8p in an unchanged Factroy Box, and it sounded like garbage. Fluttery and popping. Once I filled the box with great stuff (expanding foam to fill the space and add support for dynamat/fiberglass internall walls, then sealed over it, to make the box what the AudioBahn sub calls for (.5 cu ft) It sounds incredible. Still needs to be a little more fine tuned for the AudioBahn Alum8p is tuned at 42hz (thats really really low for an 8")

the point being, YES replacing the speakers will get you some better sound, but going nuts with $150 6x9 will be a waste of money, unless you are going to sum channels and add an amp.

To give an example. I Have the factory sub, rears and front 6x9 all summed to my alpine amp, then to Pioneer TS-D6x9, and their is more bass from the 6x9 than the factory sub. almost to the point where I dont need to replace the fact sub. Probably enough for the avg user, but since I install Car-audio for a living, I know the potential, and mentally just cant live with it, knowing it could be better.

Re: Alpine 9 Speaker Subwoofer Upgrade

Does the Kicker ZXSUM8 take care of the time alignment built into the factory system?
