Re: Alpine 9 speaker system Speaker Only Upgrade results

I've been looking at using Polk's all around when i decide to pull the trigger on my door upgrades. Each set has a high sensitivity rating at 92db and also silk/composite tweeters. Not to mention they would all be matching, including the center channel which i already have. My personal preference for tweeters has always been silk dome and i know Polk makes a quality product, as i have used them in the past... and eventually ill work my way back to the sub and upgrade that to a Pioneer 8" shallow mount (dual 2ohm) sub and also re-enforce the stock enclosure.

Center Channel:
db351 - Polk Audio

Front Components:
db6501 - Polk Audio

Ebay 1/4" MDF adapters - Front Doors
MDF Speaker Spacer Rings 1 4" Thick 6x9" to 6 5" Large Adapters One Pair | eBay

Rear Coaxial:
db651 - Polk Audio

Re: Alpine 9 speaker system Speaker Only Upgrade results

All speakers have a break in period via a number of hours used and type of music that's sent through them. The sweet spot will show up sooner then later but patience is required, those focals are better then what's stock that's for sure.

Re: Alpine 9 speaker system Speaker Only Upgrade results

URGENT::

I'm in the middle of installing the focals on the stock 6 speaker setup (no amp). Would you guys recommend i use the supplied crossovers for both the tweeters and woofers?

I did so on the tweeters but left the woofers without it. Not sure if this would help adding it. SO far i gotta to allow them to break in because I'm not overall pleased with the difference but time will tell

I think all you need is the crossover for the tweeter, not the woofer.

Got mine from Crutchfield. I'll share my thoughts in the coming week or so after some time to adjust and review.

Would there be any harm to installing them? Keep in mind i do not have the 9 amp'ed system, just the base version. Thanks again.

If your installing them right where the stock tweeter was... meaning right at the end of the speaker cable where you cut off the OEM tweeter, you should be fine. I wouldn't install another set of crossovers if it were me.

Re: Alpine 9 speaker system Speaker Only Upgrade results

So as promised, I wanted to share my thoughts on the Focals ISS 690 for the 6 speaker stock system. I replaced the fronts with this.

At first I was way disappointed. They sounded just as bad as the stock speakers as far as clarity. Luckily from reading up, i figure I'd let them do their "Break in" and glad i did.

Start with the Install:
Install was a breeze using one of the other forum topics that showed step by step and pictures to go along. The worst part was putting the molding around the door. For the tweeters, it did take a very little bit of sanding to get the Focal's in, but it wasnt enough to break the stock tweeters from going back if needed which is what i wanted in the event i wanted to reverse the setup.

SQ:
After install as i said, they sounded bad. After some time to break-in however, i am really happy how loud and clear this set is. I'm assuming based on the high 92+DB sensitivity rating that it made it possible to sound louder then stock. Of course the type of music and source you're playing will make a difference. Some source or songs will sound low, while others are thumping.

Bass:
Gotta say, i thought the stock bass hit decent. Moving to these i would say slightly improved with maybe more quality. I can't really say however if the bass is actually stronger or not. But either way i am happy with it. (I'm still planning on adding my sub to the system later on if that says anything haha )

Tweeters:
OK so here is my complaint on this set. First let me say, clear as day. The quality is there. The problem i have with this set as i have heard this throughout the forum is the "Brightness" of these tweeters. I mean i like my music loud, but the brightness of the tweeters in certain songs actually hurts my ears! Even at lower volumes it can still bug you. This is where i heard people chime in about Silk Dome tweeters. I wish i had a way to test different sets, but not that simple. Will i return the set because of this? So far no, and probably won't, but it's been on my mind.

Overall:
Well, i can't say i'm not happy. The speakers do sound nice, and it has improved my audio experience. Am i saying i can leave it as-is? No. Everyday i been looking at amps and signal kits because the SQ still needs work. I wish there was an easier way to update the EQ part of these systems to improve the SQ only, but not the case. Would i buy these speakers again at their pricey price tag? Honestly I can't answer that. I wish i would have been able to test other speakers to truly see the difference. Because of this i cant answer that question. I purchased mine from Crutchfield which does offer a return policy. But since i cant see the effort being worth while and returning something i've been using i am not going that route. All i will say is I did think it was worth replacing the speakers though

So that's my take. Feel free to ask questions. My music type mostly is Dance, Club, Techno, etc.. A lot of Dance style music. Of course i listen to others as well. This is probably why the tweeters are not a great fit for me but oh well... Happy listening.
