BTW I'll add that i asked Crutchfield about this and they stated to install the crossovers on both speaker types which i already have so no problems from what i can see. Thanks!

Great info...are there any other tweeters that are supposed to be better because they don't have the silk dome?

Greetings,

The Beryllium tweeters are excellent. In fact, Focal has line for them. Be prepared to spend money and you need an excellent aftermarket amp. Continuing up the price range, check out Ceramic tweeter then Diamond tweeters. It also recommend to get an aftermarket DSP that has processor of 56 mhz or better.

Metal tweeters can be handled, but not when you stick with the OE system. You really need to play with xover and eq settings.

Best for now.

Greetings,

You should be able to find something between $250.00 & $ 500.00 for the front speakers with tweeters in metal or a fabric material.

It is question of the type of music you listen to the most.

Best for now.

Re: Alpine 9 speaker system Speaker Only Upgrade results

My music ranges from smooth and classic jazz to pop and rock so i was looking at the focals previously mentioned for the fronts and rear doors and I also wanted to replace the rear pillar speakers.

Greetings,

With the type of music you listen to you, a more natural tweeter. The Focal tweeter as many has mentioned is on the bright side of the range. If you are interested in the Focals, the best thing to do is find a shop that has them and listen to them for a while with your music. The worst thing is to do is buy speakers go on a long trip and have a headache.

For the rear pillar, Focal does not make anything in their normal lines. The closest thing they have a 3 inch midrange speaker and not sure if they sell that individually anymore. I always recommend to keep to the same tonal response in a surround sound environment. A soft dome speaker might conflict in the sound waves of the other speakers causing the listen to hear a conflict of sound.

Where the Focal will shine for you is in the mid/bass and midrange frequencies. They have alway been excellent in that. It is a matter of the upper midrange and high frequencies that you have to be comfortable with.

The hard part is that you are doing a straight replacement with the speakers and the factory DSP settings are not the best in the world.

Best for now.

To 1stJeep's point, He has always been spot on with his remarks no matter how hard at first i didnt want to believe it The biggest problem really is no control over the EQ settings. Yea i mean we have the basic 3 level EQ that our radio gives us, but its worthless as it gives minimal control over the sound levels. Thats the main issue.

I think the "brightness" affect that i hear mostly are from the high frequencies that certain dance music plays. With your style music, i can see this probably being a problem with the Jazz music. With the other styles, maybe not so much.

I'll tell ya what, during lunch I'll run to my car and blast some jazz tunes to see how bad it might be. I'll report back later today. But again this shouldnt be a 100% answer to your question, just some feedback to consider. Hope that helps.

Re: Alpine 9 speaker system Speaker Only Upgrade results

So I played some of the jazz music from the Itune radio station "Jazz Chill" and gotta say the music sounded pretty good. Out of the 7 or so songs i listened to i never got to the really high frequencies that caused the pain i explained earlier, but the piano at times got pretty close. I dont think it would be a bad idea to try out a different set at first to see if you're happy with them, and if not then come back to the Focals. Or if you really want to try this set, keep in mind that you may want to exchange them out if you get the brightness affected. That's just my 2 cents.

Re: Alpine 9 speaker system Speaker Only Upgrade results

I appreciate the time you took to explore that. I keep in mind that all speakers need to break in using various hours of media and eventually will settle in. I'm thinking ill still get the focals because of the high sensitivity numbers and then maybe I'll add an amp down the road. I'll be replacing the fronts and rear doors also and I've already replaced the center dash with the Polk which changed the sound for the better.

Re: Alpine 9 speaker system Speaker Only Upgrade results

Hi 1stjeep sorry for going off subject here. But There has been something I kept looking at in your profile. It is the pic of your GC with the train in the background. I kept saying to myself I have seen that before but couldn't remember. Then it came to me I was in that same exact spot last summer when we went camping and took a road trip to Scranton. I found the pics last nite. Here is the pic. Oh and keep your posts coming on the audio upgrades. Might be looking into some of them when I finish with exterior mods.
