Alpine Speakers to Infinity Kappas - Minimalistic Upgrade?

So I have a 2013 WK2 with the Alpine system. I don't think it is as bad as some people do, but I recognize that it could use some work. I'm thinking to keep most factory components but change out the front and rear door speakers.

My plan, which comes from knowing pretty much nothing about this, is to match the following:

A pair of Infinity Kappa 692.9i in the front (link: Infinity Kappa 692.9i 6"x9" 2-Way 330W Car Speakers at Onlinecarstereo.com) or the Infinity Kappa 693.11i (http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...ty_69311i.aspx)

A pair of Infinity 62.11i in the rear (link: Infinity 62.11i 6.5" 2-Way Kappa Series Coaxial Car Speakers at Onlinecarstereo.com)

Anyone have any thoughts (including that I'm going about this stupidly)? I basically want to do this simple and not do extensive tearout. Just swap out existing speakers with these, call it a day.

Re: Alpine Speakers to Infinity Kappas - Minimalistic Upgrade?

Ok, ended up ordering these:

Infinity Kappa 62.11i (150W 6.5" 2-Way Kappa Series Coaxial Speakers w/ Edge Driven Textile Tweeters)

Infinity Kappa 693.11i (220W 6x9" 3-Way Kappa Series Coaxial Speakers w/ Edge-Driven UTF Tweeters)

Also ordered Infinity Reference 3002cfx 3.5" speakers (to replace the 3.5" in the dash) since there are no Kappa speakers that size

Did the same thing with my 2500 Ram with marked improvement. Was very happy with the results, but you still need to upgrade that woofer. It was weak in my ram and to me is the weakest point in the JGC Alpine. From what I've read the answer for both vehicles is a Stealthbox. Unfortunately that will also require an amp.

One suggestion would be buy the Kappa 6.5 component system instead of the coaxials. That way you can replace the A-pillar tweeters. You don't need tweeters aimed at your hips anyways.

Yeah, trouble is Stealthbox is a significantly more expensive and extensive upgrade, especially when you get to the amp. But that might be something I look at down the line. Honestly, I can't say weak bass is what is bothering me with the Alpine. It is lack of clarity/muffled sound. My hope is the clarity will improve dramatically just with these upgrades without breaking the bank or butchering the car.

I might upgrade the A-pillars separately, but we'll see.

Re: Alpine Speakers to Infinity Kappas - Minimalistic Upgrade?

Update: caraudiogiants is out of stock for the infinity kappas, but should get them in in two weeks. They're much cheaper than alternatives, especially for the 6x9s, so I'll have to wait it out. The 3.5" infinity reference from Crutchfield arrived and now I'm pondering whether I should wait patiently or just spend 20 minutes and do it myself this weekend.

Re: Alpine Speakers to Infinity Kappas - Minimalistic Upgrade?

If you are patient, it is actually very easy. I'm sure there is a video for door panel removal on YouTube. The only thing you need to be careful about is sliding the panel in the correct direction to release the molded in clips. I got in a hurry on my Ram and broke the first one. After seeing that one the rest was easy. Only other issue is having a small 1/4 in ratchet to loosen the screws on the dash speaker. And it looks like there is much more clearance at the windshield than my Ram which raked back much more. Go for it.

Need to dig in the tools to see if I have that 1/4" ratchet...

Re: Alpine Speakers to Infinity Kappas - Minimalistic Upgrade?

Update: don't have a 1/4" ratchet so I'll have to wait. Also, caraudiogiants cancelled my prior order because apparently they didn't have them in stock, so had to order elsewhere.

One thing I realized was that I could get a the Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 as a cheap (~$70) but better 8" PnP subwoofer. I just ordered that too. Yes, I realize that I could go the "all in" route of an amp and a bigger sub, but I think in keeping with the "minimalistic upgrade" spirit this is a good way to go.

Reviews seem to suggest it won't be massive booming bass but it will go lower and be cleaner, which is exactly what I was looking for.

Link to the sub, for anyone interested: http://smile.amazon.com/Pioneer-TS-S...ct_top?ie=UTF8

Do us all a big favor... install everything but the sub and listen for a day or two. Then install the sub and give us a full report on whether this a big difference in sound or not. I'm sure there are a lot people that would like to know.

Sorry, I'm having a shop do it so I'm going to have to get everything done at once. Nevertheless, I think I should be able to give a fair assessment of the sub.

I've read a ton about this sub and note that either way, this won't be a HUGE difference. It'll be cleaner and go lower, but that's about it. It won't be louder or add bass to the setup. To do that would require a significantly larger investment (amp + stealthbox, for example - at a cost of more than 10x what I'm paying to upgrade this sub).
