Alternative to Sharkfin w/better reception?

I am considering replacing my stock antenna with a Sharkfin-like antenna, but based on the mixed reviews of FM reception in fringe areas (I am ~50 miles from broadcast areas), I just wanted to ask the simple question...

Is there an alternative to Sharkfin other than the short stubby antennas? Just a different design, that maybe works better?
