Re: Android on Uconnect 8.4

Good find, thanks for sharing. This would make keeping my 2015 even easier after lease. I'm hoping there is a plug n play version of the newer hardware when it's available. I'm a tech guy by trade and it's painful to know I'm running a 640 x 480 resistive display. Most probably don't care but either way I'd pay the price for a swap if/when it's possible. Looking forward to your thoughts after install.

I'd love to know what the specs are of the Android hardware in there...

Re: Android on Uconnect 8.4

Very neat but I hope that you also bought a spare radio unit...

I watched the videos and the installation sheet - the board that you replace inside the factory unit was needed for what exactly since the UCONNECT system stays ? WHat loss of functionality happens to the UCONNECT part when you remove that board ?

Re: Android on Uconnect 8.4

Done with installation .. everything is working fine so far

I will post a video for the actual unit with android and how to use it.

Installation:

- Removing the head unit (done in 10 mins) video guide :

- Head unit dissection: (you must have a heart of a surgeon to do this ) I planned to do a video showing all the process then I found one that already there .. The whole installation takes 1 hour and it's easy if you have the right tools. You add a custom board which hack your unit and gain control of the touch screen in favor for the android box. I ran into small technical issues dealing with the ribbon cables but once I figured out how to unlock the connectors everything went perfectly.

After that all the remaining process is easy as installing a lockpick plug and play.

Operation: To access android all you have to do is hold on the screen for 4 seconds and to go back to uconnect u do the same. The system is so smooth and responsive. You will have a full android under your control you can do whatever you like (Snapchat account for the car using the front camera). The only downside of this system is the screen . U will not have multitouch control and u have to press slightly harder in order to control it (Resistive touch screen). As for the resolution, It's fairly good watched a couple of youtube videos and it was good.

here is a video reviewing the mod from the same guy who did the first video:

also here is detailed review for the mod:

Review: Android on the Uconnect 8.4 screen (long) - Don't wait for Carplay. - 2014 - 2016 Jeep Cherokee Forums

P.S. Kindly, excuse my spelling and grammar mistakes

As I mentioned the only downside in this mod is the resistive touch screen. I was aware of the screen problem from the beginning but there is no alternative unless someone do a touch panel upgrade.

The system is based on the rk3188 chipset (Rockford), which is commonly used in Android TV sticks and low-end tablets.

Actually, your not taking anything off you are just adding a custom board to the unit.

Re: Android on Uconnect 8.4

Wow this is my first time hearing about this. Do the steering wheel controls still work for changing songs/volume? I saw the knob works from the video for the volume, but was curious about the controls on the wheel. Can you still use the screen off button too? Would love to have that as a quick backup to hide the video on the screen from cops if nearby.

You can use the steering wheel controls if you paired the android box with the head unit using bluetooth as a media source .. you will gain control over your media the same as your phone ..

Unfortunately, the screen off button is not working on android .. i think u can do a floating button on android once clicked a black wallpaper will be activated .. I think it can be done

Regards
