Another speaker thread for Alpine premium stereo

Hello, I have been reading everything I can about upgrading the speakers in regards to the Alpine Premium 9+1 stereo system. I purchased 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited a couple of months ago and I love it. I don't totally hate the stereo but I don't love it either. I would like better sound clarity without having distortion when the volume gets over 32.

I read a lot about the focals, however, they are not very easy to get in Canada unfortunately. I can't even order them from Crutchfield U.S. as they force me to use the Canadian Crutchfield site and they do not carry the focals. I looked into Sonix Electronics but they too do not offer them, so between Crutchfield Canada and Amazon (Canada), I was thinking about going all Polk Audio.

I know there is a thread somewhere on this site where someone installed the Polk MM speakers and hated the sound and went back to OEM. I am looking at getting the following, (am not an audio expert at all) so any advice would be much appreciated:

Center channel and rear pillar speakers: Polk Audio db 351. Will these also fit in the rear pillar? I believe 1stJeep installed 3.7 inch speakers in there. Is it even worth changing the rear pillars at all?

Front Doors and tweeter: Polk Audio db 6501 6.5" component speaker
Polk Audio db6501 6-1/2" Component System at Crutchfield.ca

Rear Doors: Polk Audio db 651s 2-way speakers
Polk Audio db 651s 6-1/2" Slim 2-way Speakers at Crutchfield.ca

I am not looking at changing the sub at this moment, just the speakers.

Thanks everyone,
Mike

Try woofers etc outlet they may ship north. order focal ISC690 (they don't have ISS690), but same speaker just take the tweeter out or disconnect. same speaker as ISS690 except for the tweeter.
I think just about any speaker up front will be an upgrade, Alpine that came out seems a $9.00 unit.

Greetings,

Woofer Etc might not be an authorized Focal on-line dealer. You might be better off on eBay and pickup ebay's warranty.

Just in case you did not read enough on the pro's and con's of the Focal speaker, it lies in the tweeter. Focal uses a metal dome tweeter that is bright and harsh. This more of a club sound. Other tweeters are a soft dome material that gives you a more natural sound. The most popular is the Silk, followed by other textile materials. Polk uses a soft dome tweeter

Best for now.

FYI from focal USA website:

Focal America has an established relationship with online electronics outlet Woofers Etc.

They are a fully authorized source for discontinued Focal products.
-

I would not buy speakers myself off ebay as it's almost guarranteed to be a poor counterfeit. I'd stick with an authorized reseller. Web is full of copy Polk, Focal, JL

Best for now

I will check them out, I wanted components for the front as I wanted the tweeters changed as well. Like you said, maybe I can simply disconnect them or look around and get some shipped to a U.S. postal outlet close to the border than go pick them up, stay over night so that I don't have to pay any duty when I cross back into Canada. I will email them for shipping costs, just hate paying duty as our dollar is about 70% to the U.S. dollar, plus duty fees, it really starts adding up. Thanks for the info.

Good point, I did read about the Focals, some love them, others can't stand the bright tweeters. I would hate to order them from a U.S. company and realize I may not like them, sounds like maybe I need to look for a Silk dome just to be on the safe side as well as 92db or higher from what I read.

Thanks again

Greetings,

Focal for the longest had the best midbass/midrange punch across their product line. Which is why a lot of folks get their lower lines. Now the rest of the industry has responded to that market.

Depending on your upgrade path, it is not uncommon to mix between the Focal midbass/midrange drivers and other tweeters such as soft dome.

Keep us updated.

Best for now.

Depending on where you are I use SCC parcel pickup for deliveries to port huron, i've never paid duty but anything over 150 you'll pay HST tax on. If it's shipped within the USA from outside of Michigan you won't pay MI state tax and usually shipping is freebee with places like crutchfield.

I can help out a fellow jeeper for pickup no problem, i'm up there once a month at least.(from London)

Thanks, much appreciated, I'm close to Toronto so for me most likely I would try to find a pickup postal office near Buffalo or Niagara Falls, U.S. I will keep looking around. So many choices in the U.S. you guys are lucky.

Re: Another speaker thread for Alpine premium stereo

Ok so after looking around, I finally decided to simply get some speakers from Crutchfield (Canada). I ended up getting some Infinity speakers. Components for the front doors, coaxial for the rear doors. I will do the front center speaker at a later time. Now my question is do I need to install the crossover that comes with the components. I have seen a lot of posts on this forum that states I shouldn't have to, however, based on tech support from Crutchfield, they suggest that I should. Here is the tech's chat response:

"The factory amp's crossover though is built specifically for the factory speakers, which act more as a mid with a great deal of highs. The crossover that came with your components, be it inline or a box, is built for those speakers. Better sound quality with the intended crossover."

What are your thoughts on this? If I don't really need the crossover, I don't really want to install it. Has anyone tried both ways to see if the sound was better with or without the crossover installed? Thanks again guys

Re: Another speaker thread for Alpine premium stereo

The focals have been reported as having very bright tweeters...too bright for some and not enjoyable. Other threads here have been recommending CDT even though focals have a bit higher sensitivity.

Re: Another speaker thread for Alpine premium stereo

I was more curious as to whether or not the crossovers were needed for front component speakers. Crutchfield says I should put them in, others say no, so I'm confused.

I finally installed Infinity Primus PR6502is (6.5 coaxials) in the rears today. The hardest thing was getting the door panels off and back on. First one took me a while, but the 2nd one went much faster. Just be careful with those clips, I managed to break one on each door, once when prying the door off, and the other when putting the door back in, so just take your time and align the clips into the holes properly before banging the panel back in. Also had to drill 4 new holes to put these speakers in place. But for only the back, so far, they sound very good, much better than what was there before. The highs are a lot more pronounced now, but I can fade all the way to the back and crank it to max volume and no distortion.

This weekend I will try to get the front ones in which are Infinity Primus PR6500cs (6.5 components). Hopefully it will sound much better. Once that is done my next task will be the front center speaker and then hopefully a better sub in the back, but that may wait for a little while.
